This is going to be a long post! I would ask that all the people who contributed to the thread on the recent fires on the island read it! Pretty please!
Following the recent spate of fires on Corfu that resulted in a 39 page thread on this forum, many people expressed their desire to show their appreciation of the Fire Service for all their good work.
Personally I felt that a donation to a charity benefiting all Greek fire-fighters would be most appropriate as help was provided from areas other than Corfu.
Despite several efforts by myself and Bob, we were unable to track down a charity similar to the charities in the UK for fire-fighters.
In desperation I wrote to the Athens News some time ago. One of their journalists, Damian Mac Con Uladh, whom I'm sure many will know, forwarded my original email to a contact in the Fire Service. I have today received an email which reads as follows:
Dear Ms. Giles,
We would very much like to thank you for your concern.
You may make your donation to the following account:
Hellenic (Greek) Fire Service Special Account for Mutual Aid
Bank: Eurobank
Account number: 0026.0025.40.0201322965
This account was formed in order to provide financial support to the Greek fire-fighters, in case of: a) death, b) injury, c) illness (inflicted upon fire-fighters and/ or their immediate relatives).
We very much appreciate your interest.
We would also like to thank Mr. Mac Con Uladh for copying your regards and your request.
Kind regards,
Nikolaos Tsogas
Major, Head of the Public Relations Office,
Hellenic (Greek) Fire Service Headquarters.
With the passage of time it is very easy to forget, to quote Sir Winston Churchill, "How much was owed by so many to so few."
I hope that all the people who originally expressed a desire to make a donation for the benefit of the fire-fighters will now do so.
We have given this some thought and to try and co-ordinate a collection would in our opinion be quite difficult. For our part we will be making a donation directly to the Hellenic (Greek) Fire Service Special Account for Mutual Aid.

Good for you, Trisa. Thanks for going out of your way to find the way to help . A quote from George Eliot: WHAT DO WE LIVE FOR IF NOT TO MAKE LIFE LESS DIFFICULT FOR EACH OTHER"
You have done a good deed. God Bless. I shall send my donation forthwith.

Thank you Lavinia and Jan, also Suzibren for your replies.
I was hoping that after nearly 400 posts on the original fires thread from people worried about their homes whilst they weren't there or their friends and families or just posts from those who were obviously very frightened at the time that there would have been more interest shown.
There are many people who had much to be thankful for. Bob and I were just two of them.

Trisa, I will be back in Corfu in a couple of weeks when I will be making a donation to this. I will pass it to Alan (and Pauline) to give to you. Unless you want to have a beer or three before the season ends.

Hi Trisa, I would hope that most people have, or will, donate directly to the fund as you have. Might it just be that people haven't posted on here that they have done so? I certainly hope this is the case. Well done for your efforts. Moyra

To be honest, whether people have donated or not is none of my business although, as you say, it would be good to think that they have.
I was more surprised at the lack of interest shown but I expect that after the event there are other things to worry about - until next year. (I suppose having the car ready to go directly outside and a packed suitcase and the cat box and dog leads waiting by the front door in case we needed to evacuate the house during the fires in Loutses focuses the mind somewhat!)
The original letter is going into the Athens News so maybe that will drum up some national support. Damian Mac Con Uladh the journalist at the Athens News who was so helpful has said that now that they have found out the details of the fund they will be published every time there is a tragedy. That is good to know, not that we want any more tragedies but unfortunately they happen.
