Hi folks,

Following on from the recent "2nd favourite holiday destination" thread, I am looking to add another Greek island to my "visited" list.

I know this isn't a Corfu question, but have any of you well travelled folks been to the island of Halki, just off Rhodes ?

I'm interested in visiting there on my own at the end of the season and wondered what it's really like? I've had a good nosey on the internet and the place sounds lovely and quiet. A nice retreat.

This is one of the last islands remaining that I can fly to from Glasgow (well, fly to Rhodes and skip over to Halki).

Any personal thoughts/reccommendations would be much appreciated.

Me and hubby went to Halki about 5 years ago after we had heard about it years before... we were not let down. Lovely island, not many people, chill time definately but if you want to have a drink and some dancing at night( Greek that is!) then this the island for you and they will know your name if you want them to !

See this

 Hi Sue,

Thanks for your link to Halki. I have spent all afternoon going down memory lane. I have never been to Halki but it sounds idyllic, I have been right through the website and clicked on to their sister site "Symi". I went there in my yachting days, 1966/67 and spent some time anchored in Panormitis Bay, where the monastery is situated. It was so quiet and peaceful I vowed that some day I would return. I never did.

To get back down to earth I am just off to watch Man.Utd. thrash Soton on the box. I had to watch Bolton v Arsenal earlier because the wife is an Arsenal fan, so all in all it has been a couch potatoes day.

Trace, go for it girl, it sounds a beautiful place. Wish I could go with you but the wife won't let me. LOL

 All the best.......Alec.

Sue:  Thanks for the link.  I checked it out.  Although it is indisputably nice, don't you think it's a bit barren?  Where are all the lovely trees and flowers of Corfu?  I guess Brits rate sunniness next to the sea as the most important thing.  As for me, give me the flowers and trees and lush pastures of Corfu any day!

My 2nd favorite Greek island is Skiathos.  Has a lot of pine trees (plus all the requisite sun, sand, sea, etc.).  The predominant tourists there seem to be from places like Germany, so I guess, this being a predominantly British site, Skiathos doesn't count.  Just tho't I'd throw my 2 cents in!

Well, whatever floats your boat!  Always nice to hear about different Greek islands!

Hi Alec

Glad the links gave some good memories. Tim and I have  said we would love to visit Halki again but perhaps not, so the memories we have will always be good ones. Don't think it will have changed that much though!

Nowt wrong in being a couch potato sometimes...nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Not sure about the footie though!!!!

what is your problem?  A member has asked for suggestions re other Greek islands to visit and you turn it into yet another Brit. bashing exercise.  For your information, the British, like any other nationality, are all individual people and we all like different things.  Yes, there are some british people who go abroad solely for the weather and are not interested in local culture, food and traditions, but not all of us are like that and that attitude is not only exhibited by british tourists.

Hi Portia, We went to Skiathos about 3 years ago. It's a very nice island and the food in the town up that hill where all the fish tavernas are is fantastic. It is very differant to Corfu as you say. Corfu is full of olive trees and as you say Skiathos is full of pine trees and has it's own beauty. There are also a lot more sheep in Skiathos which you see all the time and lamb chops are on every menu, something you dont see too much in Corfu.  The funny thing is that the British population on Corfu is only about 5% whereas the British population on Skiathos is almost 15% so I am supprised that you didn't get more responses about Skiathos. What a great airport!!!!. You check in and go cross the road to the taverna and they come and call the flights in there. The bad news is the short runway which you sort of fall off the end and then climb again to fly back. If the flight is full they can't carry enough fuel to get back to the UK and have to stop for a fill up.

I have to say that I found Hydra to be a very beautifull island and when the house is finished We will be touring all these islands yet again  and hope to stay in Hydra for a week or two. I have only been to 8 or 9 Greek islands so there are lots more to see. We have also visited 3 or 4 mainland resorts which were also very nice.

There are an American couple who come to stay in Corfu every year and spend every day for most of the summer in Agni. They actually live in Hawai but own a house in Corfu and come here every year for 3 months. They are the only Americans we know in Corfu as it is such a long way from the states. From hawai it must be the other side of the world!!!

Funny thing is, I don't remember any Germans in Skiathos. I normally spot them as I try to go to German taverna's. These Germans won't put up with the stuff that is fed to the British. I always drive back from Venice through Germany as I find it such a beautifull country, especially in the south. We have invited a German couple to stay with us this year and they don't think they have the opportunitiy to go to Skiathos as there are no flights. It may be Dutch or Scandinavians you have seen there. Unless you know the language it's very difficult to tell the differance.

I must admit i am not very well traveled, but did like Erikusa, I went there to see a friends house, his brother owns the only cafe there. It is a lovely place, if you want to hide away for 2 weeks or forever if you wish.

Many thanks for your response Sue, sounds exactly what I'm looking for.

What time of year did you go and where did you stay?

I'm looking into trying to stay right on the harbourfront in Nimborio. (people watching is a must)

I'm going to do a bit more research, so may take you up on your offer and PM you at a later date.

As Seaangler mentioned Portia, the island of Halki apparently used to be covered in trees, but they were mostly all cut down during the days of rather over enthusiastic boatbuilding. Sad perhaps, but it wouldn't stop me visiting. Sometimes different is good.

Hiya...hydra is only a small island as you know the only transport there is a dustcart so every thing has to be move by donkey and mule. allso  fishermen mending there nets with all the cats around waiting for any fish that the fishermen find in there nets around the harbor side ..its a beautifully harbor with plenty of charm, the gold shops to look at (keep the wife out) the ramparts of the guns that surrounds the entrance into the the harbor ..to watch the big sea cats come in and do there maneuvering tossing up the water from a green to a white wash foam all the jelly fish being like put into a giant blender  and coming out in bits all a cross the harbor.... allso the gallery that is there is well worth a visit all the painting enthusiast that are there painting the tranquil harbor fort to watch them painting perch in dangerous places to get there ideal pichure..we were there when Richard branston came and sat with is young son at the time next to us.as he was saying that he was after some ware very quiet and as there was no traffic on the island it seem the ideal place.....so you see Portia places like helki symi Hydra mite be barren but they do have charm and character not all us Brits are sunworshipers.... as myself and the wife love the history of the far out places to visit..some do they go for the relaxation and the sun that we dont get hear in england for the others like myself and the wife its different..

I deeply apologize to any I may have offended.  Yes, we all like different things.  And it's quite normal to want to be someplace sunny if you live in a place that gets very little sun!  I guess I am biased by hearing my many British friends:  All they talk about is (a) is the place hot, with great beaches?, and (b) is it cheap?  Of course, there are many other considerations, and glad I am that I have found such wonderful folk as you, who appreciate the culture and the flora as well!

I find it very hard to believe that Corfu has only 5% Brits, for one, and that Skiathos has 15% Brits.  Hmmm...  But I'm sure you're probably right.  It was just an anecdoctal impression of my visits.  Again, I am sorry if I offended.

Good to hear of so many other great places!

Portia,

thats the percentage of people who own homes and live there. Holiday visiters are in these places in much larger quantities. You can get a totally differant impression of an island and where the visitors come from by just moving to the next village or hotel. From the number of British planes that land in Corfu there must be much more British holiday makers in Corfu than any other nationality.

Hi Portia

a gracious apology, thank you.

Re:- I find it very hard to believe that Corfu has only 5% Brits, for one, and that Skiathos has 15% Brits.

I think these figures are expressing the number of Brits. as a percentage of the overall population of the island.  I have read that Corfu has the largest expat Brit. population of any Greek island.  So I'm assuming that, although numerically Corfu has more Brits than Skiathos, the indigenous (spelling?) population of Skiathos is smaller than that of Corfu so the fewer number of Brits. are a higher proportion of the overall population. So does that mean you have 3 times as many chances of meeting a Brit. on Skiathos as on Corfu?

The population of Corfu is around 100,000 so 5000 Brits living there. The population of Skiathos is 4,200 so 630 British there. I would guess a lot of these are holiday reps etc.  Skiathos is such a tiny island that if you rent a scooter for the day to look round the island you will need to go round the same places in the afternoon as you did in the morning as it is quite easy to get round the whole island and down every road in a morning if you don't stop. A nice policeman stopped us for going down a one way street the wrong way but he just made us go back up it the right way.

I spent 8 months on skiathos and it is a wonderful island, so beautiful and the local people are wonderful.

There were many UK residents there then and am sure now are even more.

Most are married to locals and some Uk couples as in ex pats.

There was one American girl but she is back in San Francisco now!

I am sure if Portia lived in England for a few years she would realise the importance of getting away to the sun for a few weeks each year is a much needed tonic! I know some years the English summer is a fleeting moment in time ! If that is the case then it is very nice to go where the sun is shining every day!

Now if I could try to persuade the Americans to take their vacations to one place and stay put for 2 weeks instead of trying to fit in all European counties in 10 days.... it's like 'ok it's Monday so this must be Belgium!'

And many Americans think that 'Europe' is one country... it is scary .... and their European Geography knowledge, even more scary.....

As for the education.... don't get me started......

(ok it's 5am and didn't get much sleep so am allowed to be crabby!!)

love

Niki

Hi All

Do Pm me Trace when you are ready and will give you any info yu want. I think Halki will suit you. We went late May and it was  quite hot then. Don't know about October though.

Loved Halki even with it's barreness , also enjoyed the pine covered slopes of Alonnisos(near Skiathos) and of course love the greenery and flowers of Corfu. But as we are now all agreed , all Greek islands have their own charm and beauty and the sunnier weather is definately a bonus

And finally lets remember us Brits live on one of the most beautiful and greenest islands in the world !!!

Cheers

Hi sue

you are for sure right about the most green and pleasant isle of all!

I dream of taking my boys to the Lake district and dunster in Somerset and all the other great places to visit!

I would love to hear where people here particularly love to visit in the UK so can plan my next trip....Just to go into an english bakers and all that wonderful bread, the smell of it..... cornish pasties, eccles cakes, oooh!

eating chips out of a bag so hot your fingers burn, the curry house in almost every village to say nothing of the towns, there are lots of great things I miss!

But most of all (tears falling down face...) I miss the people and their great sense of humour!!

love

Thanks again Sue, it now looks more of a probability that this adventure will have to be delayed slightly to next May. We've gone and booked up for a fortnight in Portugal at the start of October (taking the ouders with us). By the time I get back I may be cutting it a little fine for the decent weather and don't want my trip to coincide with the October school holidays (nearer the end of October I believe?).

Also, hubby has "spotted" my Halki folder and has commented on how lovely it looks and how he'd love to go........so much for the planned peace eh

Yes Sue, we do live on a beautiful green island, with some lovely people.......just don't get me started on the not so nice things about it

Yeh, that's the problem Trace, some of the "not so good things" spoil  it for me too!!!! Re. Halki, think mid October would be the latest you could travel to the island, might be earlier. Still do consider it for another time . Have a good hol in Portugal in the meantime.l

Nikita...I personally love Derbyshire  especially around Bakewell where you can enjoy the famous puddings(they do not call them "tarts")

Well sooty, You have now got me thinking of Bakewell puddings and the wonderful food in the Peak District. We are going up there this weekend and also next weekend. In fact we go most weekends when we are in England.

We feel so lucky that we can  spend some of the time in Derbyshire  (which is where our home is in England) and some of our time above Agni (which is where our home is in Greece).

How lucky for you Graham to have homes in 2 beautiful places...expect hard work to achieve that came into it too !!!!

We live in Stockport so Derbyshire is so handy for our camping trips. In fact we were due to go for a few days after Easter, but unfortunately personal reasons have had to delay that. Hopefully later in the year.

Back to the original thread, quite fancy a trip to Lesvos . Anyone got a favourite place to stay on the island and why ?

Cheers

In reply to Niki's suggestion that Americans should "take their vacations to one place and stay put for 2 weeks instead of trying to fit in all European countries in 10 days...it's like 'ok it's Monday so this must be Belgium!'"

Perhaps if most Americans GOT vacations, that might be a good idea.  However, there is no law mandating ANY vacation time for a working American, and of those who do get any vacation at all, they are allowed to take from -0- to 10 days' vacation per year.  This is versus the 5 - 6 weeks common in Europe.  And let us not forget that anyone living in or near Europe doesn't have to spend much actual travel time to get to another European country, vs. the 1.5 DAYS a Californian must spend just to get to a European destination!  Please see chart below:

The reason it's so hard to get a vacation and so hard to enjoy one when you manage to squeeze part of one in is that the U.S. is the only country in the industrialized world without a minimum paid-leave law. As you can see from the chart below, we've got a death grip on last place in the paid-leave standings.

    Austria 25 30
    Belgium 20 24**

I'm sure many Americans would be more than happy not to stress themselves out trying to plan for a very far away trip to Europe by planning on staying in one place but, unfortunately, Americans, like most folks, want to see lots of distant places before they die!  And since 26% of Americans get NO vacation, the ones who do get one want to cram as much in as they can in the very very few days they do get (those lucky ones who do get a vacation, that is).

America is, actually, quite isolated.  All we've got near us is Canada and Mexico, and after you've "done" those 2 countries, it's normal to want to try Europe, which is infinitely more difficult to get to!  And since they, unlike Brits or anybody living in Europe, can't just "pop over" to Europe on, say, a Friday night for a weekend of fun, Americans have to plot and plan for many many many months just to even GET a vacation, however little, to Europe.

Also, the idea that most Americans still book those "see Europe in 10 days" vacations is really rather old hat.  Most Americans are a lot more savvy nowadays and do pick a smaller region to stay in.  Who needs the stress?  Jeez.  All of Europe in 10 days?  Who does that anymore?  No one I know!

If we Americans got 5 weeks of vacation per year AND lived only a couple hundred miles (or even only a couple thousand miles) away from Europe, you would see much more in-depth traveling by Americans.  They would NOT be flitting about from place to place!  But since they in fact do not have many opportunities to travel, they have to do the best they can with the paltry time they do have.

I don't know about others on this site, but I had to work 19 years before I got my last vacation.  And I don't honestly expect I'll get another one for another 19 years (IF I live that long!).  Can any Brit say that?

I understand Niki's frustration with the ignorance of Americans regarding Europe.  I'm an American and I, too, am deeply frustrated over this.  She is perfectly correct:  We Americans ARE ignorant about MOST other countries (and continents!).  I think it's because in school, they teach a kind of U.S.-centric vision of the world, as if all other countries are inconsequential in comparison to the U.S.  This is a lethal strategy and is now, as we see in the news, backfiring on the educators.  Yes, I agree:  This is really scary!

As for the Brits' penchant for wanting to go someplace sunny, and Niki's comment:  "I am sure if Portia lived in England for a few years she would realise the importance of getting away to the sun for a few weeks each year," I kind of laughed.  Why?  Because the few times I have been in England, leave it to fate!, it was so bloody hot, I was DYING!  I was SO looking forward to gloomy skies and cool breezes, and even rain.  But it was not to be!  (What?  Does searing heat FOLLOW me?  Ach!)

Anyway, please, have some pity on the poor Americans:  They are undereducated and certainly under-vacationed!  I don't know anyone from the EU who would trade places with an American in the vacation department!

Lucky you guys!

Portia

Hi sooty..there are a load of places to go on lesvos petra to stop at as its all on the flat there, while you are there visit the thermal springs and have a relaxing bath,a ten minute bus ride takes you into molivos where it is all hills to climb but very pretty with the castle all lit up at night allso the harbour with all the taverns around the keyside, skella kalloie is allso very nice with it shallow warm waters, a must  to see is the pelicon that is a resident there walks into the tavern in the heat of the day to cool off with the delights of the tourist feeding and giveing it water...on the all of lesvos is a very nice island to visit so where ever you go you will not be dissapointed...... chris

You are so right sea angler, lesvos is a super island if you want a relaxed layed back holiday! I can even claim being pecked by that pesky pelican coz I would not give him some of my lunch when I he waggled up into the taverna! He is not there anymore, the villagers claim he must of been taken away by gypsies, but i think they get blamed for alot! A guys who visits the village won a national photograph contest a few years ago, he was on his lilo in the bay and the pelican was perched ontop of the guys back :)

If anybody wants info on Lesvos just pm me, I have travellogues on www.virutaltourist.com  scrolll down this page and check out my piccas if you want to see the kalloni area: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1e246/

I also have loads of urls in my favorites on Lesvos, just pm if you plan to visit!

hi Niki,

Talking of fabulous places to stay in the Uk, i was brought up in South Gloucestershire although i am living in Hampshire now and wondered if you have thought to visit the Cotswolds and also the Wye valley which is heaven especially around Symmonds Yat or Hay-on-Wye? Bath is beautiful too as are most of the Cotswold stone villages all around there.

I feel all homesick now!

Hi Jane

I have been to the cotswolds and it was yrs ago, it still sticks with me as being so beautiful!

Never been to the Wye Valley though!

Portia, I know all about the vacation allocation in the USA, very unfair!

I was refering to the people who do manage to get away for 2 weeks, mostly older retired people or self employed and they love their 2 weeks to 'do' europe, have had many heated discussions trying to persuade them to stay in one place and get to know the locals and area!

In England when the weather is very hot it is quite unpleasant unless you are lucky enough to be on the beach at Woolacoombe with your surf board!

if you are on the tube or in an office in London it is not too nice!!

ps d date now April 29th!!

Well the first time I went to Greece I chose Thassos. I fell in love with the place and hopefully one would like to live there. We stayed in Skala Potamia (which is a tourist destination) but it wasnt spoilt like some tourist places can be.

Last year I went to Samos which I didnt enjoy as much as Thassos but it was a different pace. Thassos was more relaxing. There were more bars and things to do in Samos so I suppose its justa  question of what you look for in a holiday. Halki looks alot like Samos.

We stayed just outside of Pythagorian which is a fishing town. Samos Town isnt highly rated but Pythagorian is lovely. Loads to see.

Strangely enough CatherineD I was only thinking about Thassos last night, we went there a few years ago and stayed in Thassos town, it really is delightful.

We used to spend hours sitting outside a Cafe right opposite the port  drinking coffee and watching the trucks loaded up with huge blocks of marble, being shoe-horned onto the ferries.  It was also great in that it is a tiny Island so nowhere is too far away. And there are some lovely sights.

The airport is a giggle as well, it is a tiny place on the mainland, called  Kavala 'International'! with a great ferry ride over to the Island.

We also loved Skiathos, we stayed in an aptment on the Cape Canapitsa, and there were some fantastic local Tavernas, and the bus ride into Skiathos town was very enjoyable, we used to go there for the evening, and just wander around, it really is an attractive town.

I would say that rating the Islands, Corfu is our favourite, then Skiathos, then Crete (but the right bits), and then Thassos, next would be Kefalonia, with some others bringing up the rear!
