I am sure that everyone who contributes to this forum finds it an invaluable way of exchanging information.   However, it is a public forum and as such is obviously open to differences of opinion.

My point is, that if you do not agree with a point of view expressed, you obviously have the right and the opportunity to air your views, but please do so politely.   I have become quite uncomfortable recently when reading some very forceful comments made by certain members.

Am I alone in finding some posts rather harsh? I fully realise that this has been discussed before, but feel that it is a point which needs re-addressing.

Depends on the subject matter really, I suppose the reason why the comments have been forceful is because people are passionate about that subject, otherwise why bother posting??

I agree Lavinia

The problem is what sounds OK when it is spoken sometimes comes over very strident when written down

My rule of thumb is I read before I press the send button and if I would be offended at what I have written I delete it

Yes we all have different opinions but if someone posts something I find too much to bear I ignore it rather than start a fracas!!!

My point is, Nigel and SeaAngler, anyone is entitled to make a comment but there is no need to be rude or to make personal attacks.   I completely agree that certain people always believe they are "right" (that is what I mean by arrogance), even though they blatantly have less experience and knowledge than other less assuming people.

Of course we shall hold different opinions, but I am just appealing to everyone to be pleasant about it and be a little less abrasive and patronising.

Can I just say that if ever you find a post to be objectionable, you can always use the "Report Post" button above that post.

Well said Lavinia! I have lived here for 15 years now and when I first found this website a couple of years ago I thought to myself what a great forum, and I always like to read everyones comments but to be honest for about the last six months I am getting very fed up with some of the comments on here. It seems to me some people just like to have ago at others!

It's OK seaangler,
He's in the UK and I'm in Corfu working very hard trying to get our mudpatch (garden) into some semblance of order.
Been trying to get a sky dish sorted and the pool painted for three weeks and both turned up today unannounced. Welcome to Greece, as they all say to me!!!

I am completely at a loss to answer you, Nigel, as I cannot understand what the ages of your children have to do with anything?   For the record, mine are aged 30 and 32 but I am sure no one is the slightest bit interested!   What a weird reaction.   I was in no way making any kind of criticism of you; I was making a general comment.

SeaAngler I am glad you love Elliemay too, but have no idea who "M" is???? Perhaps you could enlighten me via a pm?

I agree Lavina with your post and I am trying hard not to react into an argument on another topic. We all have our views but some people seem to think they are right and everyone else wrong. I have been on this forum for years but like others who are long gone I am wondering why has it got so personal.

Blooming great idea bunty..providing I can be the moderator...

This site has given me many hours of enjoyment over the years, but I now stay out of some of the discussions that go on simply because I would wind up getting thrown off this site if I was to reply to some of the posts, so now I just go to another topic that is happy and hope that members get fed up with the bad ones and they just die away (The posts not the members )

The list of admin used to be as long as my arm when I joined..now we have three or four trying to keep everybody happy..and remember they and the moderators don't get a wage they do this for the love of it...so lets all give them and Agni a break and our full support.

Everybody thinks they know best but agree a simple "polite" answer is all people needs. We dont all live on Corfu but assume visit when and as soon as possible, like myself. The forum is full of information, and advise and must say some replys are somtimes a bit harsh.

Unfortunately Lavinia there is an increasing tendency to be downright rude and personal on the Internet. I belong to a site for the over 50's (no name, no pack-drill) and some of the posts are truly appalling.

I actually think that this site isn't as bad as it was before a 'purge' on personal and intolerant comments some months ago. However I agree with your general premise that there is no place for obnoxious comments or personal attacks.

I find that I can state my case without resorting to offending anyone who 'dares' to disagree with me!!!

I always live by a saying that my mum used often...
IF YOU CANT FIND ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY, THEN SAY NOTHING.

Opinions, when asked for, are fine. It's when people force their view on a subject that the poster was merely making an observation on...and cristicism, when written, and without the humour of facial expressions and jocular tones of voice can and does come across wrongly.

I too find it tiresome having to defend something I have written when it comes under attack...hence I make very few posts nowadays. I expect I am not the only one who feels that way...

However, as David rightly pointed out, this site is no worse than most, the internet is a platform for people who like to bully. The major holiday review sites are a perfect example!

“Personal attacks” I agree with you David. I have been the subject of a number, vis a vis, stupid, jerk, Man from nowhere etc. I have never resorted to reporting such folks, not my style. Folks should try refrain from making such attacks.

“They blatantly have less experience and knowledge than other less assuming people”. Not sure exactly what this means, like Seaangler maybe. If we do not know each other personally, how do we know who is experienced and who less experienced? And what is experience in this context?

I gave what I believed to be helpful advice to someone on this forum. When building a house, have internal water mains. somehow conceal heating oil containers and have no electrical supplies live outside whilst away. Should I volunteer this opinion/information as I have no experience as a engineer?

Maybe more use of the emoticons/smilies (far right as you type your post) might be a way of coming across better!!

My day today has so far consisted of getting extemely wet wilst watching my daughter doing race for life

Walking the dogs on the downs and getting even wetter

Now deciding if I should pack for my holiday

Or tackle the everest of ironing in the pile

Sorry that was probably a very pathetic attempt as an example but Im sure people will get my gist

Now Im off for the oxygen tank to try and reach the top of the pile!!

Also I realise its not everones cup of tea but the chatroom is how I have got to know others from this site and after a while you get to know people a little more..ie some come in for information about resorts/hotels, some come in for a catch up and chat and others (brian) just keep falling in and out of the door!! ..julesxx

“Obnoxious comments” that David and Lavinia use. But what is an obnoxious comment exactly? That’s important surely? And we all probably see situations from very different angles? What might be considered a positive comment to one person borders on the negative to another?

Notwithstanding, the word abnoxious is rather strong to describe anything written on this forum surely? More apt for instance, to describe the act of someone spitting on the green bus perhaps?

I have posted replies on outside oil/water/electrical systems, the dangers of consuming wild mushrooms for instance. Are these comments coming from an obnoxiousness person or just a person wishing to be helpful?

I totally agree with Lavinia (and I run some sites myself and moderate several others so that's where my experience comes from )

For some reason posts seem to get very personal or objectionable for no apparent reason and like Bruce, I stay out of it where possible, even though I was involved with a thread where in-advised comments were made.

It really is up to the moderators to take control and remove such posts, which is not easy on a busy site, so some slip through (but lately things have tightened up in the forums)

Some people seem to feel they can stay anonymous and post whatever they like, however for all those that think they can say what they want, when they want with impunity, well your possibly in for a fall at some stage.

Comments may fall foul of the Malicious Communication Act

Britains Got Talent lawyers went to the police about online comments made about this weeks shows and Trip Adviser has had to allow accommodation/restaurant owners etc.the right to respond to comments made

Everyone needs to remember that this forum is provided by the Agni Team, who have the right to close it down whenever they want

Anyway, enough of this idle chat, I'm off to pack for tomorrow's flight to Corfu

Kassiopi here we come yipee!!

Hi Chris,
I remember well the Greek Nights we had in Weymouth at the Acropolis and the entertainer that got drunker and drunker as the night went on.
Don't go telling everyone who I am, I prefer to remain incognito. A little mystery is what a girl needs!

Yeah,
We had a couple of good Greek nights in Weymouth and you're right his name was Bamber.
Also enjoyed the Greek nights in Birmingham as well as the Tamworth and Nottingham ones.

Bit daft saying you have taken my name off the post. I will get you later!

I think that we could do with another Greek night out in the UK, any suggestions from anyone?
It needs to have decent Greek food and entertainment and be accessible for people to travel to from all over the UK.
Now there's a poser!!!

Have I missed something!!!

Good topic and do think it's good to have a good healthy debate... what I don't like is when it becomes personal or when a poster crosses the boundary and the posts become hurtful - that isn't nice at all.

I am still an avid poster and reader of the agni forums and long may it continue xx
