Which books do you think make the best holiday books to sit on the beach and relax.

All depends what you like Melly!!!

I like a good hearty mix of fiction and pyscholgical thrillers along with a little bit of factual thrown in!!!

Last break I read A Thousand Splendid Suns and it was a fantastic read.

Oh my god I love A Thousand Splendid Suns, it is so sad at the end xx Much better than The Kite Runner! Im waiting on Emma Donaghues The Room but someone said its a bit too dark for a holiday read lol

I have just discovered Connie Willis. American author, suppose it rates as science fiction, but the detail! Oh! Marvellous.

Graham Hurley has a detective - Joe Faraday - shambles along in Portsmouth, set stories, quite good.

Peter Robinson, Canadian author, has his detective - Alan Banks - set in Englnad, really good series.

Rebecca Tope? Cope? Set in the Cotswolds, her 'heroine' housesits, and then does a Miss Marple, bodies abound. Lighter reading, but good stuff!

Any hints for me?

It was sad but a fantastic read. This break I will be reading a factual book about a mother who lost her daughter and the dogged determination and red tape she had to get through to fight for her daughter's killer to be re-tried for her death following his acquittal. I know it sounds very dark but honestly I am itching to read it.

I DID have two books for this year, "The Greek For Love" by James Chatto, and "Greece On My Wheels" by Edward Enfield. Unfortunately, I could not keep my nose out of "The Greek For Love", and have already read it twice!

For hubby, I found "Sharpes Trafalgar" and "Sharpes Waterloo", by Bernard Cornwell for 50p each on a local book stall. We both enjoyed the series on TV, so I am hoping they will prove a good read.

Has anyone considered getting a Kindle Reader? Got one a few weeks ago and they are excellent, no carrying books in luggage and can download thousands of different books.

Hi mossa,
I too have a Kindle, but as yet haven't played with it much. Did manage to download about fifty free books from Amazon though, bonus!
There is a previous thread about Kindles in The Beach here:-

To Kindle Or Not To Kindle

What do you think of them?

Hi Elliemay
Thanks for reply, will look at Kindle thread. They are different to reading 'ordinary' books. Love mine.

Hi Mossa,
If you go on to the Amazon site, there are lots of free books to download. A lot of them are classics, but, hey ho, I never read them when younger, so why not now. There are a few by Homer as well, Odysseus and The Illiad, both free.
Enjoy!

I didn't really want a Kindle, I'm a "book" person. However, I was given one as a Christmas present and am totally converted! I will be taking it on holiday. It currently has 35 books in it, a mixture of thrillers, factual, biographies, old favourites, classics, and "Little Women" and "What Katy Did" - going to relive a little bit of my childhood you see! Will take up no luggage space or weight. I can chop and change books depending on my mood, and can add books at any time (they are also usually a good bit cheaper than from a bookshop), and as already stated, lots are free. Long live Kindle!!      Moyra

Kindles are no problem in bright sunshine. I also thought they might be. You can also adjust text size and line spacing if you want to.
Like Moyra I have a mixture of all sorts of books on mine.

I would get the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larson.

Forget the films of it and read the books. Far far better, but you may find them hard to put down

I agree with you on that C4owner. The Millenium trilogy was a superb read and the final book was absolutely brilliant.

The Kindle, to which I have also been converted, can be read anywhere that you can read a book. Bright sunshine is not a problem.

I still love my 'proper' books but the Kindle is just so portable and as has been said, you can take thousands of books on holiday with you with no weight or space issues. I love it!

Trisa.

Millenium Trilogy fantastic, but don't read either Trespass or Room, far too deep for holiday reading. I'm just reading Keeper of Secrets by Judith Cutler, very good but written in old English. I have A matter of Trust by Robin Pilcher and The Other Family by Joanna Trollopeo to take next week and hopefully swap when I've read them.

I wont be taking this on holiday as I have read it 4 times, but if you enjoy a read that incorporates religion sci-fi and insane humour, written with huge intelligence then this one is for you. Scepticism inc. by Bo Fowler. Its Amazon description is;

"Narrated by a supermarket trolley, this novel is a satire on the lunacies of organized religion."

The supermarket trolly in question was the first to reach the summit of mount everest! Trust me that is incedental and gives none of the plot away. I rock with laughter every time I read it.
I was going to take Eleni but couldnt wait, its way too dark and sad for a holiday read.
Thanks for the suggestions

Personally I like a bit of trash or a jolly good Jilly Cooper romp to read on hols. I will be taking The latest JC book Jump and probably Jackie Collins. However I agree A Thousand Splendid Suns was a spectacular book and I am longing for Khaled Hosseini to write another novel.

I'm usually too busy playing with the children in the pool to read these days - but will pack one or two in case I get the chance. Spike Milligans - The Looney is one I like to re read (why not you re-listen to music more than once) or Alistair MacLean's Guns of Navarone which I found in my hand luggage untouched from last year.

Not keen on fiction/ novels etc so usually read Biogs.

Found Chris Evans Biography to be a really easy beach/pool read last year as its written in very short paragraphs. Few pages, nap - few pages, drink - few pages swim. Nothing too taxing.

Like the Kindle idea.

Peter.

Odyssey and Illiad - phew! A brave person who tackles one of these books in a fornight! For us, as a family, we love Harlan Coben. My other-half starts one book and me another, they then pass to one daughter and then her friend. I usually break after two and move onto something in the lighter reading along the Jilly Cooper line. I must say I'm interested in the Kindle after reading these posts!

May I suggest Brixton Beach by Roma Tearne? I have read the Millenium Trilogy and found the first book almost impossible to get "into", but I persevered and was glad that I did as the second and third books were brilliant. I am currently re-reading W.Somerset Maugham's short stories which I first read many years ago but stand the test of time.

I too have a kindle, it was a Xmas pressie and although I loved holding a real book, I don't expect I will be buying another one unless it breaks! They are no problem in the sun, just look like a normal book but much lighter to hold the shade the sun!

Just downloaded The House of Dreams and Dust although disappointed I couldn't get Shantaram or The Greek for Love on kindle but there are loads to choose from and if you shop wisely very cheap too!

Hubby bought me a Kindle for my birthday and although I am a "book" person I am totally converted. The only problem I can foresee is that Ian and I normally take books on holiday that we can both read, and as we both read at the same time, this might pose a problem with a Kindle lol!!! However, he has said that he will take just one book and exchange it at one of the travel offices when we get there (just as well as there is no way he is getting his hand on my Kindle lol)

I currently have 44 books downloaded ready for me to read. That should keep even ME quiet for a bit!!!

My daughter has a Kindle and I have read a book on it and am also converted so am going to buy one for my holiday(s) . It will never replace books for me, but there are advantages.

Normally I take about 8/9 books for a two week holiday on the basis that I read one in two days usually and there are always a couple that don't 'gel'. I always end up leaving them behind as I need the room in my case for goodies I have bought on holiday so a terrible waste of money really.

The Kindle is very light and easy, specially when you are lying down, and as others have said it is great in the sun.

Hi,
Just found out another advantage with the KIndle. I switched mine off before we flew out on 19th April and have only just switched it back on tonight expecting to have to recharge it before reading. No, it has kept the full battery charge. I am really impressed!

Anyway, back on topic, I have just found my copy of The Corfu Trilogy by Gerald Durrell so have just started reading that again for the umpteenth time.

This year I am having a complete change of style. Instead of taking Corfu/Greece related books I will be taking a selection of Val McDiarmid crime thrillers. Nothing like a good, gory read before bed! LOL!

Other years as a change to the Greek books I like reading autobiographies...Dawn French, Alan Titchmarsh, Jo Brand and especially Jonathan Ross which was hilarious.

I too enjoyed the Millennium Trilogy on my Kindle and looking forward to the film coming out at Xmas (The girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

I have found the kindle has saved me a lot of money on book purchases because they are invariably discounted significantly from published prices.

My wife had to consider buying books whilst in Sidari because I wouldn't share my Kindle and they were charging well over the published prices and often were well thumbed too. In the end she re-read one of her books and kept herself going until we got back home.

I will be buying her a kindle to go back to Corfu with in October

Why not head for your local bookstore and have a good browse - that's half the thrill of buying books. Picking an author you know and like would be a great help as there's nothing worse than starting what you think will be a good read only to find you don't really enjoy the writer's style, or subject for that matter.

If you're really stuck when you get here, there are table sales here where you can pick up second-hand books for literally pennies.

I've just bought an Anne Zouroudi, must read it before we go though, then I can decide whether to buy more. For the past two years I've read a Mystery Man crime book by Bateman and have just ordered Dr Yes for this year. I usually take about 6-8 books, usually crime/ thrillers/ spies but also top up my ipod with audiobooks - Francis Durbridge Paul Temple series are my faves or a Ruth Rendell. Would take the Millenium Trilogy but they are too big so watched The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last night, watching the other tonight. Might be persuaded to get Kindle to get over the weight problem!!
