We had someone the other day (our niece) so maybe she had answered all the questions she knew beforehand as only asked about DOB, work and when married, but she did make me laugh when I asked her about our sister in law who is a bit like the queen and seems to have two birthdays. My niece told me if someone cannot remember their DOB just put the 01/01 and then the year they were born if they know there age

Doubt if many of the census takers in UK spoke Greek either!

Hi Jan,

Keira was given the services of our neighbour to translate and now she knows all our business (she is English - was married to a Greek)

Hi jan,
In England it was not a problem as you could complete the census online.

Hi all, think we were actually the first in Lakones to be 'done'! That was on Monday 'teatime'! The two young ladies were with us for half an hour at most and both spoke a good amount of English, although we, as usual, attempted to torture them with our bad Greek! Think they are popping back for coffee and a look at our piccies when time allows!!!

Elliemay- what about the ones who came round because you had not filled in your form- maybe because you didn't have a computer or read English!!

Really was not a problem Jan. Although the census forms could be filled in and sent off or completed online. There was also the option of obtaining the forms in other languages as with most official documents in the UK now.

Thats correct Elliemay. The form was available in Greek. I noticed the option when I did mine online. It's also going to more accurate as everyone fills it in, not just a few who happen to be in when they call.

A delightful young man arrived on my doorstep yesterday evening asking where my neighbour's house was to do the census.   Our house was not on his list at all and he was very surprised to find me at home, he just saw me outside and asked about our neighbours!   Our house was the first one built in this area in the early 1980s and is still known locally as "the doctor's house" even though my late husband (a surgeon) died nearly 25 years ago. Our house is quite well known to the locals and I think the fact that information is not up to date may cause problems, or people falling through the net.

It took less than five minutes to answer the very simple questions - hardly an ordeal...   I then discovered he spoke very good English as after we had completed the census in Greek he conversed at length with my British brother who is staying with me at the moment and who speaks not a word of Greek.
