Sure you are right about Haiti- but there was something very distateful about tourists visiting whilst a few miles away people were living in abject misery- if they had sent an empty ship full of aid that would have indeed been impressive.

Yes, I meant ALL commercial traffic in Venice, not only the big ships. It is a difficult problem for them, with no easy solution.

Yes, the Costa Victoria is in front of the Celebration from the view We see from our house. The Celebration will go south today as it came from the north at about 11am and passed me in my little ciaque. I really felt very small as it slid past.

I felt the same Jan. We were going to go on a week long cruise and then a week in the Dominican Republic but I just couldn't bring myself to go and sit drinking G&T in a 4 star hotel while there was such suffering only a few hours drive away. We went to Kenya instead.

Jan ... Port au Prince (South) is a long way from Labadee (North) with no real roads in the area, the stuff that was taken b y ship(thousands of tons) had to go over the mountain first in order to get to the South. Many people are employed by RCI from Haiti and to not go there would have robbed them of any income that they had coming in! There were also very large collections from the ship passengers for the people in the South and many actually gave goods in the way of clothes and food to the people outside of Labadee many of whom had relatives in the South.
While what Graham describes was in most peoples minds at that time the only relief supplies that went down to the South was from the cruise ships. Had Royal Caribbean decided to avoid Labadee those people would have had nothing for at least over a week or more.
Graham I guess that to a fish your Kayak feels like you did to the passing ship ...

I think whether we like enormous cruise liners or not, all of us who love Corfu should welcome any visitor arriving by any means if it is going to help the Corfiot economy, as long as it does not adversely affect our environment. There are a great many people here in dire financial difficulties.
I have never been on a cruise as I am not fond of being at sea having nearly sunk on an old ferryboat years and years ago travelling from Athens to Mytilene (Lesbos) in a storm. We actually got to the point of being mustered on deck and a Pappas started singing Kyrie Eleison! So I am hardly qualified to comment, but I just freak out when I see these enormous "tower-blocks" gliding across the sea.
But that is beside the point, as Elliemay says...tolerance!

Lavinia ... while not having been in that position on a ship I have been in life threatening ones due to work on land and while not nice it may be a case as they say of getting back on the bike when you fall off it?
As you know ferries are a different thing to cruise ships which are in the main safe places to be although as history has shown us nothing is 100% safe.
I am sure the people of the island are happy that they get extra trade from the cruise ships despite the fact that not everyone will get off in any given port, and for many people Corfu and other places in the Med and Eastern Med would probably not be on their places to stay for a land holiday.
Many of those who have visited Corfu by ship have said that it was the best Islands they had visited and hoped to one day go back for a land based holiday so it does have secondary benefits as well.
