Know the ones you mean julesx2. I think, having scoured the 'net, that they're probably a type of 'parasitic wasp', clever little beggars who lay their eggs inside the bodies of live aphids. Of course, I'm no expert and may be entirely wrong...

Are they the ones you hear before you see them as they sound like a world war 2 bomber that you have to duck and dive to avoid. If they have yellow/orange stripes, apparently if stung by one medical attention must be sought immediately.
The bombers I've seen seem rather interested in exploring brick work, roof tiles and crevices---looking for insect larvae?
