Unfortunately, some of you will now find your avatar replaced by the above image. This is due to the size of file you have posted.
We now have a 20kb limit on avatars and the system will pick out any that are oversize and replace it with the above. There is a small tolerance (I'm not saying how much though) which will allow small indescretions. An oversized avatar may initially load okay but it will eventually be weeded out.
If you get the above image you can still download a new avatar using the facility in the 'Your Profile' link.
To check the size of avatars - or any other pictures/photos etc - just right click on it and go to Properties, this should then give you a file size.
Hope this clarifies the situation.

Footnote;- The limit of 20kb is to facilitate the use of the site by those with dial-up modems (the pages open up a great deal more quickly). I admit to being one of the worst offenders for using large avatar files.

I was just about to PM you asking if there was a problem you were not aware of (not with mine, I might add!) as I had seen this on a number of members avatars.
Thanks for clarifying the issue

For some reason unbeknown to me, I have lost my Popeye Avatar, hence the reason for the time being I have uploaded a picture of my last ship in the RN.
Jedi, I have tried reloading the Popeye Avatar but no joy. I think I got the URL right but it is not working, and I do not have the picture in my Gallery anymore to upload again.

Sailor - appear to have a small techie problem as your avatar is still in the avatar folder but, when I try to upload it for you, it comes back as 'not a valid image file'
Fortunately I still had it on my system so re-uploaded for you.

I am on dial up and am finding lately that the site pages are loading terribly slowly. I often have to give up looking at the site as it takes too much time. It makes no difference whether I am on AOL or internet explorer. Do you think it is the avatars that are causing the problem?

I don't think so. I have weeded out the large avatar files and most, if not all, are now well below the 20kb file size limit.
I'm on Broadband and even I have to wait a considerable time periodically. I think it is just down to the amount of traffic on-line at any one time.
Also, the site slows down sometimes when Nathan is tweaking the system - I always have a look to see if he's on-line when I have a site problem.
Doesn't help you much I know, but it's the best I can come up with at pres.

I was on almost by myself this morning with no Nathan either. I have noticed when the pages are loading it seems to load twice. At the bottom it says, opening page, then done, then goes back to opening page. Oh well, they say patience is a virtue....!
thanks for your help,
Julia
ps it has just done the opening page bit three times!

I have noticed the site seems to have slowed down recently, although this has been mainly for the last few days. I doubt it is the avatars causing the problems as they have been on here a lot longer than that, and as Mike says, he has weeded out the avatars over 20kb, which wasnt the case at the beginning.
I'm connected with a 1.1mbps broadband and still get slowing, maybe theres a little niggle with the site, or from the server at Nathans end? Don't really know what i'm talking about, so best pick Nathans brain next time he's online or send him a PM.

If the site is slow it is generally the server at fault which is located in Florida.

Thanks Jedi for the re-upload of my avatar. Dont know what happened with it. It was not there when I logged on yesterday, nor in my profile as the URL.
I think it is the server also. Sometimes the site is quite slow when going from a posting back to the main page, or changing to other pages. However on other websites it is OK. I have BT Broadband and experiencing the same.
MCH, Steady, Sails indeed. BTW the Manchester is 20 years old this year, and old girl in herself. Will probably be scr*pped within the next 5 to 10 years and replaced by the new Type 45 destroyer.
