Many of us use online sites for storage of photos and videos and also sites such as Facebook etc. My experience relates to the video facility on Yahoo but the principle to could apply to many sites.
Yesterday I received what appeared to be genuine email from Yahoo management informing me that due to a Policy change they were planning to end storage of videos in 3 months time and that all stored videos would be deleted. It stated that if anyone wished to retrieve their videos a 'Download' facility was available on the Yahoo site and a link was given. There were also links for more information;, FAQs; Customer Care; and a recommendation to utilise the Flickr site with a link to that.
However the links do not take you the URLs appearing in the email !! I don't click on links in emails anyway and glanced down at the Status Bar (bottom left of my screen) where it indicated another URL but still one which cleverly simulated a sort of Yahoo address.
Obviously this is an attempt to send recipients to a compromised website which will download some virus to your computer.
I went onto the genuine Yahoo site where there was no mention of ending the video facility so I sent the email to Yahoo as 'Feedback' who are now actively investigated this scam. Interestingly the only video I have there stated it was submitted by 'Ano--mous' which is the name of the group behind the recent hackings over the Wikileaks affair. Today I see that this was changed back to my name!!
I assume that similar email scams could be constructed referring to Facebook, Youtube or any other facility where our email addresses are held. The moral is NEVER click on links contained in emails.
