Did anyone watch this programme last night on Sky1??
Well I did and I thought it was a hilariously funny take on Carl Pilkington's journey to visit the 7 wonders of the world, now then for anybody who doesn't know who this man is - well he is a total opposite of Michael Palin, this man does not like anything weird or unusual, a total pessimist who does not really understand any other countries cultures at all!!! I know he is certainly not in the minority though and I'm sure there are some people out there who can relate to his thoughts and opinions... Last night was his first visit to the great wall of China and he didn't rate any part of it's history nor did he enjoy China or it's food nor could he embrace their culture (bless him though for having a try!!!)
So my question is to the formsters...
Is there anywhere in the world you would really not feel comfortable about embracing the culture, food etc much prefering to stick with the so called "what you know ritual"???

Dont fancy the life of the Inuit (sp) with that raw whale/seal meat/fat, drinking the blood etc. Be ok with fish part of the diet and that neat alchol they drink!! Also I'm not a fan of the really cold weather.

I shall probably get slated for saying this, but I'm really uncomfortable about embracing the culture and food of the USA (or at least, the general impression of them that's protrayed in the media). I fear I'm fighting a losing battle though, having both "shoved down my throat" on a daily basis.

I must admit I have never fancied visiting the far east ie; China, Hong Kong and I am of the same view that I would be uncomfortable trying to immerse myself in the countries culture and especially the food...
I would have been like Mr Pilkington last night - sat there eating monster munch rather than try the local delicacies...

I agree with this one. Neither Ian nor I fancy America so we will probably never go. Im sure not all Americans are as brash, loud and overbearing as some would have us believe - but from what I can see the majority are happy to be portrayed as such. Not for me, I'm afraid!

Nor me either... the only thing I could embrace about US of A would be eating a box of twinkies to myselfbut that's all otherwise neither of us have ever had any dreams to visit America either and although I have met some wonderful American folk - I must agree that some are very overbearing and loud!!!

We went to Side in Turkey in May 1989, the first week Thomson went there! It was completely unspoiled and we had a fantastic time. All the restaurants served Turkish food and there was no sign of English breakfast etc. One moment sticks in my mind. We were on the beach when a middle aged English couple sat nearby. He had been complaining about the food so his wife went off to the shops and returned with bread, butter and some ham and proceeded to make ham sandwiches. When she handed him the sandwich he opened it, stared at the contents, sniffed and said 'funny looking ham'. He closed it, took a bite, grimaced and said 'Oh well, when in Rome I suppose!'
We didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I'm sure he'd now be very happy in Side as I'm told it's become very touristic. I'm just glad we got there before sandwich man had made an impact.

I lived in a village 50 miles out of Houston, Texas for a summer & loved the locals & culture, no brashness there! Spent some time the year before in New York, only thing there I wasn't keen on was driving through parts of the city which are far from safe especially on my own but as for food ... I'll try anything once anywhere. Other half really ruined an evening in Sharm in Egypt when he wanted a McD there when we went to try the local restaurants supposedly!! Nearly shot him!!!
