If they are very thin it is highly likely that they have leishmania- the treatment is very expensive, and has to be continued for the life of the animal with regular blood tests etc..

If they are strays the kindest thing is probably to have them put down

Forgive me Jan, but I know the blood test is expensive, however, one of my dogs was recently diagnosed, and is on medication which costs me 1 euro per week approximately, plus a good healthy diet, and I have seen a marked improvement in the month since his diagnosis.

I accept that with strays it is a difficult situation, and one has to do the kindest thing, but this disease, if this is what they have, is not necessarily a death sentence.

Unfortunately it can be a death sentence for a stray because they are not in a controlled enviroment to ensure they take medication. We had two seperate cases in Sidari in May of dogs abandoned with this disease and both times holidaymakers reported to us that the dogs had been in road accidents, in reality one her liver was failing so she couldnt support her back legs and the other had began to eat at her own body (self mutilation). Both dogs were under the age of two and both were put down as disease was quite progressed. The test was 40euro per dog and the local vet did it on the spot and we knew within 5minutes the result.

Hi what is leishmania, how do dogs get this and why. Is it just something that they get in foreign countries

Hot countries- picked up from sand fly bites - can be sprayed against etc. but a lot of dogs do get it. My own dog has had it for 8 years and is constantly taking medication and having regular blood tests and stays perfectly healthy- but if untreated it is a killer.

Can I please just say that this dog in john and yvonnes avatare is being feed and cared for by Harry at the Taverna in Perithia the dog has been wormed and is being feed twice a day by Harry with food supplied by CARE and the dog is going to be tested for leish and if he is positive then he will be put on tablets that will help him it is not a cure but will make him feel 100% better. The dog when looking better will then be photographed and advertised on the German website so please can we stop all question of having him put to sleep. Thank you
