Current exchange rate -

1.00 GBP = 1.19328 Euro

Not quite as good as it has been but still much better than for most of last year

Unfortunately the link only comes up in Greek for me.
As we are booked for Sundays' flight will have to wait for info from EasyJet.

Google translates like this.

The Board of OJ decided at its meeting of 16 July 2010
the descent of the Divisionin a strike length in the form of 24 rolling strikes starting Sunday, the 25th July 2010 from 00.01 hours until 24.00 local time.
Contact bailiff can legally serve in this those in the audience, to become acquainted and for legally.

Found it in English which makes more sense!!

Flights in and out of Greece will be disrupted on July 25 when air traffic controllers go on strike.

Air Traffic Controllers’ Association of Greece-EEEKE announced that they will initiate rolling 24-hours strikes. The first strike will start on Sunday July 25, 2010, at 00:01 and finish until 24:00 local time.

Greek air traffic controllers demand payments for overtime work and the opening of new jobs in order to increase “air traffic safety” as they write in a statement on their website.

Air controllers’ strike affect primarily the tourism sector, “which accounts for nearly a fifth of Greece’s 240 billion euro economy” Reuters reports.

Yiannis Kourmoulakis, general secretary of the controllers union, said to Reuters, they did not take part in May and June general strikes in order to avoid hurting the country’s vital sector. “Unfortunately they (the government) did not make use of the time we gave them,” Kourmoulakis said.

Can someone define a "rolling strike" for me in the context of the ATC strikes? We are supposed to travel on the 29th to Greece - would there be another strike again so soon??

Heres what I found about a "rolling strike".

A rolling strike occurs when different agencies within a bargaining unit strike at different intervals.

So it looks like they take it in turns to strike.

We seem destined to have a problem every time we fly to Corfu at the moment. We are due out on Monday from Newcastle.

Are these people mad?

Surely tourism is the only way in which the Greek economy can survive and yet these people turn to strike action. It is time these people got real and knuckled down and saw reality. This is the way of the world at the moment so deal with it. If they can't hack it get rid of them and replace with someone who wants to work is my thought. I think BA are going along the same line, good luck to them. A willing worker has to be better than a dodger anyday.

Thankyou in advance for replies

Any word on more strikes after Sunday the 25th??

Wondering how the "rolling" aspect of these strikes will work - will they pick a different airport or group of airports each time - or just pick different hours each day?

Any up-date info welcome as we fly on the 29th.

Andyroo, you took the words right out of my mouth - for an economy that relies so heavily on tourism they seem hell bent on making us stay away - we fly tomorrow so should hopefully be 'lucky' and get there OK. Hope you all get there when you should.

regards, Kath

I read Kathimerini this morning who suggest that this strike may not happen in the end as it may be deemed illegal.    If it does go ahead it will surely create complete chaos for days afterwards.   I have a friend due to fly out with Easyjet on Sunday and when she spoke with EJ last night, they told her that they were unaware of any imminent strike action!

And that's what they always say until 12 - 24 hours beforehand when they can the flight and you are left to rearrange or get your money back.

If anyone is planning to fly Sunday change to Friday or Saturday, if you have flexibility. If not, be prepared to lose part of your holiday.

I changed my flight last week from Thursday to Tuesday. £25 admin fee and 2 extra days in Corfu.

Airlines always say this until the very last minute.

Fingers crossed the strike will be deemed illegal and the workers will abide by this.

Andyroo, you are 100% correct. Greece needs the tourists (and tourism is down all over Greece this year) so what do they do, strike regularly either on ferries or flights. People who love Greece WILL return but people who aren't that interested - just want sea, sun and sand and a rest - will go elsewhere. Ergo, less tourists in the foreseeable future!!!

As far as changing flights from Sunday none showing on easyjet website for Saturday and a whopping £305-99 to fly on Monday
Now thats a big difference to my £97 I paid back in December
Think I will put up with the delay

Carol - I think what will happen is that if the strike goes ahead on Sunday EJ will cancel your flight at short notice and you will then have the option to rebook yourself on the next available flight or get a refund. I imagine the next flight is the Monday but whether or not they have available seats is another matter.

Careful guys. You'll have the rabib lefties out in force in support of the strikers with this sort of anarchy.

Can't think who they were now but a number of posters were out in support of the best paid cabin crew in the industry when they were striking.

Just saw a post on Tripadvisor which suggests that the "rolling 24 hr strikes" mean back to back 24 hour strikes which would mean an indefinite strike!!!

The Court has now ruled Sunday's strike illegal. See www.skai.gr

The Unions had previously said they would ignore any Court ruling (Ta Nea) so who know's what will happen now??

A continuous air strike would be a disaster for Greek tourism (final nail in the coffin). Having been directly affected by the ash cloud airport closures in April I know what this is like. Total chaos.

OMG! I booked our holiday 12 months ago and if they strike we're done for - but also so is the Greek tourist industry this year.

We're flying Monday 2nd, Jet2 out of EMA and they only fly once a week! I think we'd have to take a refund and go somewhere else - I can't not take the kids on holiday.

Everything crossed and prayers being said!

We fly on Thurs 29th. Booked flights in January. Going to see my husband's family.

Let's just pray that the Unions see sense and realise the irreparable damage this will do to the Greek economy and to ordinary Greek people.

To be honest if I was not married to a Greek and didn't have family there and we were just looking for a family holiday destination I would be looking at Italy/Spain/Portugal.

Ok - confused now!

The news sites are reporting that the strike has been deemed illegal by the Court and that the Unions are to meet again tomorrow to decide their position.

But www.livingingreece.gr is saying that the strikes have been called off but that the Union will continue with the work to rule which will cause delays.

Delays I can cope with but not all out strike!

Not necessarily people here but I sometimes wonder how much people who have their flights delayed / cancelled are that concerned about the Greek economy or if they're just narked about their holiday plans. Don't hear so many comments when UK unions go on strike, or are we not so worried about the UK econmy.

Unfortunately there is a lot going on behind the scenes of the present financial crisis in Greece. Some politicians have a vested interest in any kind of unrest and positively encourage strike action, particularly the kind that causes civil disturbance and even violence. It's a pattern that has repeated itself many times over the years and defies any kind of logical interpretation from "normal" non-political people.

Of course it is detrimental - disastrous even - for the Greek economy, but this is exactly what these people want. Cause enough chaos and they will be able to get back in power.

I personally agree that the government should intervene before it is too late, but there is always the danger of violent clashes on the picket lines which work in favour of the communists/anarchists who derive maximum publicity as they pretend to be the deprived underdogs.

For those of us living here, I have to say that this year's strikes don't actually seem any worse than those of any other year. Spain has always had the Basques causing trouble, Turkey has its own, far worse, terrorists, so I do hope that tourists won't be too put off their holidays in Greece.
