In the 1970s when I first arrived in Corfu I found an excellent paperback Greek cookery book- nothing fancy but it gave excellent recipes for everything from moussaka to the Easter bread,
It lasted until it fell apart,I photocopied it and gave one to a friend and retained the very battered rebound original, but by then it was missing some pages!
Then I went onto Amazon the other day- and there it was. I now have an almost new copy- and there are others available from the same site. Cannot recommend it too highly.
It is called 'Cooking the Greek Way' by Ann Theoharou.
She has also published one with called 'Cooking and Baking the Greek Way' but I haven't tried that one.
If you are interested in cooking then do get it

Can't beat Corfiot Pastisio.
Discovered the recipe last month and have made it about 6 times already! Much easier and tastier than Italian version.
We don't put tomatoes in it, but do use lots of cinnamon, bay leaves and nutmeg.
This last one was the best! Added cumin and lots of crumbled up feta.
Delicious!

Think I would use tomato paste and red wine rather than cinammon and bay leaves, but that is a personal preference- everyones' pastitsio tastes a bit different. I use nutmeg though in the sauce on top- no cheese in it, just white sauce mixture, eggs, salt and nutmeg, and loads of grated cheese on top

I agree wholeheartedly, Janmanessi. My copy of "Cooking the Greek Way," with the 350 Drachma stamp from when I bought it in Crete 20-some years ago, is the most reliable of my collection of Greek cookbooks. After many years of use, it naturally falls open on p. 117, "Third Day, Making Bechamel Sauce and Baking the Moussaka." Hey, instructions cannot be detailed enough!! I'm so glad to hear it is still available.
Honourable mention to "Greek Cooking for the Gods" by Eva Zane (Scribner's) and "From a Traditional Greek Kitchen" (Vegetarian) by Aphrodite Polemis.

Hello, I am new to this forum and interested in all things Greek! Culture, travel and music, as well as my particular favourite Greek food. I would like to add that I too have a copy of Anne Theoharous' wonderful cookbook "Cooking the Greek Way." Mine too, is in tatters, and I was happy to find other copies on Amazon UK. I love the anecdotes and Anne Theoharous' writing style.
I just had to add to this post, as my book which has been re-bound, and is still in a sorry but very well-loved state also automatically falls open at the same page. I am ordering some extra copies for my daughters, and as I love Greek cookery, will also try and find Eva Zane's book. Another overlooked book is a small paperback printed in Greece, and the author is Chrissa Paradissis.
Many of my friends who share an interest in Greek cooking are interested in buying the more modern books on Greek cooking, like Culinaria Greece, Vefa's Kitchen, The Olive and the Caper and the book by Theresa Yianilos and I am wondering if anyone could recommend a particularly good one. (we all like books with authentic recipes, anecdotes and history!)
I have been reliably informed that "Cooking and Baking the Greek Way" is the American version of my "Cooking the Greek Way" purchased in Edinburgh many years ago!
This book is an overlooked classic, and I just wish they would reprint it.
Apologies for this somewhat lengthy post -I'm delghted to have found a group of people who share the same interests as me!

Thanks for the tip. Do you know whether this second book has a recipe for Greek walnut cake?
Deedee
EDIT - since posting the above have been on Amazon and ordered both books. Hoping there are recipes for walnut cake and tigania in them.

Thanks Jan, I have just ordered it too.
Another good book is 'Falling Cloudberries' by Tessa Kiros, which has recipes passed down from her Finnish mother's family and Greek fathers side.
Nigel Slater does a mean recipe for 'Greek baked fish' in his old book called Real Cooking from 1997. Although after finding it last year I overdone it a bit cooking it every time we had guests.

Yes! Cooking and Baking the Greek Way has the very same recipes you find in Cooking the Greek Way. I am also looking for the American edition, as it is available in a hardback edition, and may well remain in one piece a little longer. I would be interested in anyone elses recommendations for other Greek cookery books. Thanks!

Deedee- Cooking the Greek Way has karidopita in it, and also tiganites- are those (fritter puffs), I hope that these are what you meant when you wrote Tigania.

I've ordered both from Amazon this morning so if they turn out to be the same book I may have a spare to pass on to someone else. Incidentally they are not coming from Amazon's own stock but from other people/organisations selling via Amazon and 'Cooking & Baking the Greek Way' is coming from the USA so this might be the American edition you are looking for. There were still others available when I ordered mine.
Janmanessi - Thanks. The Tigania we had was a hearty pork stew/casserole with peppers, onions & mushrooms when we had it at Boulis in Lakones. We tried it at Kalami Beach Taverna also and there it was a lighter dish, more of a stir fry. I liked them both, my husband particularly enjoyed the Boulis version. I look forward to trying the karidopitta.

I have a book called ' Flavours of Greece' by Rosemary Barron. It not only gives loads of authentic recipes but very interesting information regarding the origins of them too.
It is also available on Amazon and the reviews are good too, here is the link Flavours of Greece

Lymmbo, I think I got the book in 1984. The cover was faded and the pages were yellowing--it had likely been waiting patiently on its stand in the sun for quite some time. Imagine how it looks now! I'd better follow the lead of the above posters, find another copy and retire it honourably.
Arkadia, welcome to the forum! What a perfect username. I look forward to discussing Greek food and culture with you. Wish I could give an opinion on one of the newer Greek cookbooks, but as I've built up quite a collection I try to resist the temptation to buy more. I certainly second Sooz' recommendation of James Chatto's Kitchen in Corfu.

Thank you for taking the trouble to help me find more Greek cookbooks. I must check out Amazon again! I am in Egypt, originally from Scotland, and I just love all things Greek. Are there any other forums similar to this as I am so disappointed that you will be closing?

I too have a much loved cook book, Greek Food by Rena Salaman which is held together by sticky tape and threatening to fall to shreds each time I use it. I picked it up here in 1983 when I realised this would become my home and I should learn the local cuisine.
It is a wonderful book with lovely stories of the authors memories of cooking with her family (female) elders. Every recipe I have used is spot on and and always tastes 100% authentic. I see it is listed on Amazon, highly recomended.

Sue, I also have a book by Rena Salaman called Greek Island Cookery. It was printed in 1987 and is full of beautiful watercolours as well as delicious recipes. It's just a lovely book to look through.
I also have a book called The Home Book of Greek Cookery written by Joyce M Stubbs. This was printed way back in 1963. Joyce Stubbs lived in Greece for 15 years and spoke the language fluently. A nice little book.
Both are hardbacks. I don't know if they came out in a paperback edition.

I have heard of Joyce Stubbs' book too. I first discovered it in a library in Glasgow. It is an excellent little book, and is one I would love to track down again.
I would just like to find out Members' opinions on some of the popular bigger books I mentioned in an earlier post, like "Vefa's Kitchen," "Culinaria Greece" "The Olive and the Caper," and the" Complete Greek Cookbook" by Theresa Yianilos. I know these books are perhaps quite modern in their approach and layout, and a number of friends have asked me to help them choose the best one. Anyone heard of any of these titles?
Thanks!

Have just bought Greek Island Cookery on ebay - £3.09 inc postage. Cooking the Greek Way is also available but a bit to expensive for me at the moment.
Love the Joyce Stobbs book - I remember reccomending it on here years ago - my UK copy is falling to bits but managed to find another paperback copy, on ebay too, for my Greek kitchen.

Trisa I did not know there was another book by Rena Salaman, I will have to look it up. That must have been her 2nd one as the one I have came out in 83.
Thanks for the tip!
