I have just posted something to somebody on facebook about holidays and I thought it would make a good topic. We are badly in need of a new kitchen and a new bathroom, our dishwasher only works when it feels like it, the washing machine sounds like a road menders drill and mr jules car is on its last legs!!! so should we really be spending money on a holiday to Corfu...I had to think about it for a while (30 seconds) and came to the conclusion that I really dont care what the kitchen looks like and if I have to wash up myself then so be it...Corfu won hands down!!! Are any of you in the same boat this year and will go regardless?...julesxxxx

Same here. Husband redundant, again!!! Do we tighten the belt or go for it. No contest. Its our 25th wedding anniversary whilst we're away so the holiday was a must. Something will turn up when we get back and if it doesn't we'll not starve, so no great deal.

The oven isn't working and in fact the kitchen needs a bomb under it and it started again, the car needs body work done, the garden needs major attention...sorry but my money just now is being spent on my trips to Corfu. My house could be beautiful but the memories I have gathred over the years are worth a thousand houses.

Good for you Jules! In the early 1970s I lived in Epirus for eighteen months when my late husband was doing his "time" as an agrotikos iatros" (country doctor).
We had no telephone, no dishwasher, no washing machine (in fact I used to put the washing in the bath, swirl in the detergent and then tread on it to get it clean). It was one of happiest times of my life. I honestly believe, at times, you have to feed your soul rather than spend your money on new appliances!!! I am sure a lot of people will disagree but I think you are doing absolutely the right thing and hope you have a great holiday. Very best wishes from a beautiful, softly sunlit, evening in Corfu

Just go to ASDA's or Tesco etc they do washing up liquid with Aloe Vera in now. So will be softer on your hands and cheaper than a dishwasher.
Enjoy your holiday.

In 10 or 20 or more years, we will all be old and knackered.
When I'm stuck in a wet armchair, I would rather be remembering lovely holidayus in Corfu than immaculate kitchens and things! I must confess that we've just had a new kitchen installed, but it's definitly the last one for us!

Okay times are hard and money will be a little tight, but pardon the pun hell why worry as other people on this blog have said you only live once so lets all be happy and enjoy ourselves. I love this thread. I've just got in from work at a bar job (I'm a mum of 2 little ones) and I'm back out again in a few hours to clean the cricket club - all so we can get to Corfu this year. Husband said no way can we afford to go this year so every hour I do - every stupid comment I hear or have to 'take on the chin' - I just picture landing in Corfu with my family and loving every second - its hard for sure - the barman I was on with earlier - he wanted to walk out at 8pm but I begged him to stay on with me - then around 11 ish I wanted to walk out but he was like no - we're in it together - ignore the boss he's as drunk as hell ... and its all to get to Corfu.
So tired - bed for a few hours then up to clean the cricket club - Corfu really is in my mind - night night god bless xxxx

Have a fabulous time everyone. Mal and I won't be there this year, the first time for many years. I am saving hard, was working full time in education, but now reduced to part-time due to budget cuts, was asked to take on extra hours for another education department linked with my office, only to be told by a third party that there was no way I was going to have my pay "enhanced" from his budget! Needless to say the extra hours I was putting in stopped as soon as the words tripped out of his mouth!
My daughter's getting married, so we really have to put all our spare money into that this year. Our house can definitely wait as long as we have a roof and 4 walls standing that will do for me! But next year I am definitely going to Corfu come hell or high water!

Husband has taken a complete nosedive in salary and can only get part time work, I was made redundant last October and we are meant to be off this Friday to spend my redundancy money on our 30th anniversary trip to America. It will be a miracle if we get away due to the ash and the BA strikes looming again. If we don't get to go, those women on "Grumpy Old Women" programme will look like pussycats compared to me!!! Steer clear! I am trying desperately to see in my mind us arriving at the airport in America.

Thanks Julesx2 ... I read your post and replied on the Saturday night around 1am. I got to the cricket club at 7am - I thought the place had been burgled, I didn't know where to start or whether to laugh or cry - even the clock had gone missing The mess was unimagineable - it had rained on the Saturday and the grass had been cut too - the bar staff were sent home on time then it was 'open house' - never in all my borne days had I seen such a mess. My broom had gone missing - I wanted to cry but all I could think off if I don't get through this we won't get to Corfu and to me and my lovely family that means so much.
Every painstaking minute will be worth everything when we are in Corfu - in fact I am going to put some pictures of Corfu up in my cleaning cupboard - that will help for sure.
As long as you have a roof over your head and food on your table - and love thats what counts - I'd like some decking out the back but it can wait !!!!
If its Corfu what you live and breathe for take advantage of Easyjets offer and book up!!!!

We haven't been to Corfu for the last two years, the first year because we celebrated our Silver wedding in the March in Orlando then last year our daughter got married so we had that to pay for, this year we were going to go to Kalami at the beginning of June I was really looking forward to it too but we now have to go to a family wedding, then 2 more weddings at the end of June and then low and behold the hubby gets made redundant, Something is conspiring to stop us getting to Corfu but I will get back there someday! Until then I just get my fix coming on here and getting all the news

I don't subscribe to the theory at all that holidays are a luxury. I would go stark staring mad if I didn't have my regular fix (and I have lots of fixes). I want loads of work done in my house but I also want to Brad Pitt to make my breakfast! I've had to learn that I can't have everything I want! So - holidays four or five times a year and the house will still be here when we get round to the alterations !!!!

Well we have struggled and still are but I will remorgage, and go into debt just to ensure that I have my happy hols in Corfu. I have worked for my shattered breakdown and no one is going to take my holidays away from me. So I will be in San Steph and Kavos in July and August as usual this year. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way! We are planning to move house later this year and consequently have spent a fair amount doing it up this year and expect to spend more. BUT! I have been saving for this year's Corfu trip since the week we came back last year and no-one, but no-one, gets that money for anything else!
I will never forget my (lovely) son saying a few years ago "why are you spending so much money on a holiday you don't really need?" This post would be removed if I added my reply!!!

Have given one of my daughters money this year to sort a few things out for her...So are second holiday at to go a miss (was hoping to go back to Corfu this week in fact)...
Like I said Corfu will always be there and all depends how your finances are...If you can afford to go or not...my opinion only...Chris

Jules your initial post inspired me to go back to Corfu, we decided to give it a miss this year and clear some debts and had a week in Turkey in May as a compromise but when I come back from Turkey I was really pining for Corfu and it really upset me that this would be the first year of not going after 12 years so I persuaded my husband and booked it independantly and we just returned from 10 fantastic days in Sidari last Monday. We probably shouldn't be going but with all the doom and gloom on the TV every day we will be having to pay for fresh air soon so the thought of a wee visit to Acharavi chilling on the beach outside Woody's through the day and a wee wander along the street at night for a Metaxa or two and a delicious meal in Odysseus certainly brightens up our days!!!

No kids with us this time so we are going to explore much more than before. They didnt mind coming out and about with us but didnt always want to wander around old buildings or museums. You sometimes picked up the "would rather be at the pool/beach" vibes from them. Our son is 17 today and 20 year old daughter has discovered the USA and is having another summer in camp near Chicago then off to Boston for some exploring. So when I say kids they were kids when we first started to go to Corfu. Its going to be strange just the two of us but Im actually looking forward to doing exactly what we want to do when we want to do it, mooching around Corfu town and doing some of the museums and buildings that we have overlooked. Im planning some trips down towards the south of the island this time and have also been promised (if its workable) a trip to Meteora on the mainland, our Greek friends have offered to take us and Im delighted as its something I have always wanted to see. Also something I have always wanted to do is get up at silly o'clock in the morning and drive up Pantocrator and watch the sun come up!! Seen it go down many a time but never the other way, I can imagine it will be a wonderfull sight! All this rambling has nothing at all to do with "should we really be going" but I thought Id share it anyway..thanks for listening!!..julesxx

Thanks Viv, on the plus side my son who is stick thin and hollow can usually manage to eat his way through mountains of Greek food whilst on holiday so we are going to really notice it in the euro department!!!...julesxx

Jules - It's really weird to begin with going away without children as all of a sudden you realise you can do what you want and then you have to make up your own mind. We found it strange at first - we hadn't realised how much we did to keep them happy.
Now we are a few years on from our first holiday without either of them and would love to be able to afford to bring both of them, partners, children and great granddaughter out with us - waiting for lottery win to be able to do it!
My birthday today but saved money by going to the local garden centre for lunch instead of local pub/hotel. Only cost £6 for roast beef with all the trimmings. Chose a pot plant for birthday pressie - who needs diamonds!

Hello Jules I think your post on the 23rd - I won't use quote as it's not far away for people to read! - says it all.
I can't think of better reasons for "Should We Really Be Going?" than the ones you give.
Enjoy yourselves!!

Thanks David...not too long to wait now, daughter is off to Chicago two days before our flight to Corfu so thats going to be a busy week getting her and ourselves ready!! She is with British Airways so I have everything crossed they dont have any ideas about going on strike as things could get messy!! My son might be going to Corfu for a month to help some Greek friends so we could be in for a quiet holiday and a quiet summer all round really I know they grow up and fly the nest but I have mixed feelings at the moment :( ..julesxx
