I guess this is really for the ex-pats who are resident here and particularly those who may not be fluent in Greek and may have missed this news.
There was an interesting article in the Athens News on Friday 12th Feb this year.
It appears that the old requirement to retain receipts for EVERYTHING is now back with a vengeance. It covers everything including groceries and petrol.
It has been confirmed by our accountant.
The full article makes interesting reading and can be viewed online here.

Thanks for that Trisa.
Very interesting to read, but I wonder how much the accountants will charge for the extra work with all the receipts.
What was it like the last time this was law?
The shopkeepers chase after you because if the "under cover" taxman is outside and asks to see your receipt and you can't produce it, the shopkeeper gets a whopping fine

Can you just imagine the millions of receipts to be sifted through? Receipts have a tendency to fade and become unreadable - I really don't see how this is workable in practice...

I was about to post the same thing! I've just fished out the receipts from the bottom of my bag to check dates and realised that half are now totally illegible. Ah well, I'll hang onto them anyway...

I really don't think these refer to the standard till receipts but to timologia and apothixis (both difficult words to write in Latin letters!) These should always be collected if they are for things that can be used for tax purposes

I'm not sure Jan. This is a quote from the article.....
"The measure on receipts is designed to clamp down on tax evasion by forcing retailers to issue valid cash register receipts for their sales, as well as allowing tax authorities to randomly crosscheck receipts with actual sales declared in corresponding VAT returns.
Papakonstantinou said that cash registers would now have to be installed in all businesses, including gas stations, kiosks, outdoor markets and taxis.
“Consumers will now be motivated to require receipts for their every transaction,” he said."
.....That sounds like all receipts to me.

Surely that is to stop retailers tax evasion, rather than customers.
I remember when the law came in years ago that all businesses had to have cash registers- some small shops actually closed because they couldn't afford to install them.
I suppose market stalls and similar managed to evade it then by some loophole which has now been closed.
As GUV1 and I said earlier- shop keepers always try and get you to leave their shop with a receipt- in case the police check, as they are liable if you cannot produce one.
