We went over to Anti Paxos in a 30hp boat a couple of times last year and moored up at Vrika bay then walked round to the Spyros Taverna. We have heard about the Taverna high up the steps at Voutoumi Bay. Can you make the boat safe close to the beach so that you can walk (paddle) ashore and is it worth the climb up to the Taverna??

Hi Malcy
The safest way to make a boat secure in a confined space and close to shore is to lay the anchor off the bow (so that the boat is facing the general direction of the waves/swell and then take another line ashore and tie it to something solid, like a rock. Make sure the the anchor is well dug in though - the warp needs to be at least 5 times the depth and you will need to motor gently astern to ensure that it has dug in. There are, however, regulations applied in some areas as to how close to the beach you can actually go, so take care.
You could apply the same technique adjacent to the rocks (rather than the beach) but the water is usually very deep and you may not have enough warp to make this a possibility.

Always get confused by which beach is which on Anti-Paxos, but am I right in remembering there's one you can't drop anchor at due to the electricity cable?
Also, isn't there a little concrete docking area at one of the beaches? Though I'd imagine it gets very busy now people can take boats over.

Voutoumi's the second beach, coming from Paxos. There's a line of buoys marking the no-go area for boats, but when we were there last year there were plenty moored just outside the line.
There are a couple of photos on the 6th line down of the front page of my photo gallery, which show the view from the Bella Vista hilltop taverna. You can judge for yourself from those, but I certainly thought the view was worth the climb - and I'm not known for exerting myself without good cause

Thank you Martyn. Good advice.
Binary - I think the concrete area on the right of Vrika Bay is for the water taxis etc. but we did moor over on the left side and there is a walkway to the beach.
Thank you Elaine. Sounds like it could be worth the effort but I could not get into your photos!

There doesn't seem to be a problem with the photos now Malcy, I just logged out and could still view them.

(Just had a thought, I'm talking about the 6th line of the actual photos on the front page, not the 6th sub-gallery down. You need to scroll down the page to see them)

Out of interest whilst we're on the subject of Anti-Paxos, does anyone know how busy it is in late June?
We used to go in May and once had the beach to ourselves for the whole day! In August however you couldn't even see the sand it was so busy.

Do Pan & Theo, or whoever, take their boat trips from Gaios on to the second beach?
And is it the 2nd beach the same as the first, with a gradual slope into the sea over sand? I love Anti-Paxos as you can get into the water without hobbling over stones!
Plus, as binary asked, can anyone say whether it's quieter in June? Last couple of times we went as a family to Paxos, we avoided Anti-Paxos as it was sooo crowded - great pity.

Hi gertie (and binary)
Just checked my sailing log book and the lat time I was in Anti-Paxos during June was way back in 1998! and even then it was at the end of May/early June. We did go back the following year, but I note that the last day of that trip was 30th May
Certainly, in those days and at that time of year, the bays were fairly quiet, with only a few boats/yachts at anchor and very few other visitors.
We did pay a visit last year (at the begining of September) and it was heaving, so we didn't stay. There were a large number of sailing yachts, plus a couple of megga/super yachts, a few tripper boats over from Paxos, together with a considerable number of self- drive hire boats - the 30hp boats now available have certainly made the crossing very easy.
I would suggest that, if you want to enjoy some peace and quiet there, its best to get there early - that said, a couple of years ago, we were there during the first week of May and had the place to ourselves - even at lunchtime.

Hi gertie and binary
We were in Paxos last year from 5th to 19th June staying at Loggos. We went over to Anti Paxos twice in a 30hp e boat from Loggos. The first time we just cruised along the coast but went ashore the next time mooring on the left hand side of Vrika (the first) beach. The beach was not too crowded and both the Taverna's were probably only about half full at most.(I do not like crowds but I did feel comfortable there) This would have been at about 2.00 ish as we had come round and down the west coast of Paxos first. The second beach had a lot of boats moored but I'm not sure how many were on the beach or where you would go ashore although I think the water taxis may drop people off there. If you go over in a hire boat don't leave it too late to go back as you can get quite a swell later in the afternoon although you would be going into it which is best and at a steady speed.
