These people offer a satelite broadband connection in Corfu
Tooway broadband by satelite

This is all new to me so I wondered if anybody is using their equipment in Corfu already.

The specification is as follows,
Complete system with 92cm Ku band dish £355
*Price includes dish, arms, head unit, Tooway system, and all connectors (does not include cable or
60mm mount
Basic 2.4GB monthly quota £ 22.50 /month
Bronze 4GB monthly quota £ 35.78 /month
Silver 6GB monthly quota £ 48.43 /month
Gold 12GB monthly quota £89.33/month

*Maximum headline rate, typical speeds may vary, please consult Tooway grade of service document for details.
** Limitation of aggregated, weighted download and upload volumes for a period of four sliding weeks (see GOS)
Like I said this is all new to me, we don't even have Sky in the UK so does it appear any good and has anyone else used them ?

I spent over 2 grand on kit from Bentley Walker (aka Tooway) - it's still set up in our garden. I won't go into details, but I'd avoid them at all costs.

The main problem with this setup is they limit the bandwidth depending on how much you download within a certain time period. Plus the monthly quotas are very low.

The final thing to think about is that the kit you buy is tied to their service (as I found). So you can't switch service providers once you realise the service is shoddy.

You're better looking to OTE for an ADSL connection, or failing that try and get in touch with Go Broadband.

Thanks for the reply Oaf, that's really useful. I will try OTE since GoBroadband currently don't have coverage in Agios Georges NW. If and when they do I think they will prove the cheapest alternative.

Initially I used a mobile broadband from WIND which entails putting a SIM card into a receiver. It was very hit and miss and slow speeds. Although they promised 2Mb I never got more than 1/2Mb. That started as PAYG and then I went to a year contract at around €30 per month.

At the end of the contract I moved to OTE which is the same cost but gives you a land line and 2Mb broadband. The braodband is actually around 1.4Mb and reliable. You can also pay by Standing Order which you can't with WIND.

I've still got the receiver if you want to give that a try on PAYG. Depends how much you will use it to make an OTE contract worthwhile.

We can talk in April.

Thanks for that.
I'm currently using a T Mobile dongle at £15/month in the UK since mobile broadband suits me. The upload speed is actually much faster than download so sending drawings and photos is no problem. Is the WIND Pay As You Go a half MB for both upload and download ?

That's the download Steve and it only got there a couple of times. Mostly it was 200 - 300 K. Upload rarely exceeded 100.

I understand it's also affected by how many people useing the particular cell you are in; mobile phones etc. Definitely a lot slower in the summer when Gemma and Jade are calling their boyfriends back in Basildon!!!
