Paxos Beaches

We are looking at maybe spending a week in Paxos followed by a week in Corfu. Although, we have visited many of the islands this will be our first time in Paxos. The only thing is that we do like beaches with loungers and umbrellas - being over 50 we look for the comfort zone! Do many of the beaches offer this? We will hire a car to get around.

I would recommend you have your week in Corfu first as depending on where you stay you could suffer 'culture' shock after a week of peace on Paxos. I know I find even crossing the road near the port a problem on the way home!
Harami beach at Lakka has loungers, Monedendri on the way from Lakka to Gaios has 2 tavernas which have beds and umbrellas, one of which is owned by the Bastas family. Also Mongonissi has beds at the bottom of the island, and a sandy beach.
Anti Paxos has the only real sandy beaches. Not sure if they still have the rule there that beds etc not allowed to be rented on the beach?

Many thanks for your reply. That should give us enough choice of beaches.
I think your suggestion of Paxos as the second island is good - however, we have had experience in the past of ferry crossings being cancelled when on our way to the airport - so we try and keep our second island as the one with the airport.
We are intending to go to the NE part of Corfu which is think is a "quieter" bit?

Depends on when you are going as the northeast has smaller bays and beaches and can in high season get busy-we loved Agios Stephanos northeast but it was very busy at night in the restaurants-although the beach was OK-you do get a number of boats coming and going during the day though.
We find the south quieter to be honest as tourism is not as perevolent (apart from Kavos!) but if you are looking for sandy beaches-St George south is ideal-laid back and very flat, with very nice restaurants-we also found it considerably cheaper to eat and drink in the south.
We have a house now on the east coast opposite side of the island to St George and there are sandy/shingly beaches there.
There is a beach caled Notos where there are free sunloungers under the olive trees you can use if you eat in the Panorama taverna-amazing gardens and views over to the mainland-we have just come back from Corfu for Xmas and it still looks like spring!
The south is really beautiful and village life is very traditional with wildlife galore -you regularly see the local people on donkeys and attending to their vegetable crops,kingfishers flying alongside the small rivers and buzards 'mewing' overhead......magical
Paxos is also heaven on earth-Harami bay is where we rented sunloungers in Lakka-I couldnt believe it when we went as we sailed into Lakka on a water taxi -it was heart soaringly beautiful-the water was so clear it seemed as if we were hovvering over the surface in the boat!
Very laid back and chilled out-great restaurants and a couple of lovely bars-but we were there in 2001 so I cant say what its like now,although I suspect a lot wont have changed

Diane and Steve - Many thanks for your reply. I looked at Notos and the Panorama apartments themselves looked good.
I will now revisit the Corfu sites and investigate the NW and south. Normally, we go to much quieter islands but I have always wanted to see Corfu.
Being close to beaches is no problem as we hire a car and drive around - and don't mind pebble or sand as long as there are loungers.
In the evening, we like to be close to tavernas so we can have a drink - but only low key entertainment!!
Surprised to hear what you say about Corfu over Xmas - I thought the islands more or less closed down over the winter months.

Petriti was open all over Xmas
2 grill rooms open every day (one closed on a Sunday) and 1 fish taverna open every day
3 bars open every day and then another taverna open at the weekends
There is a lovely hotel called the Regina which is no more than 15 min stroll to the bars and tavernas of Petitri and it has free bus pickup and free busse to St George which can be great if you dont want to drive-they have a website
