After discovering San Stefanos (NW) about 11years ago and holidaying there 10 times since, the day has come when we are thinking of going somewhere else - never thought it would happen but it has! Even my son has been to San Stef 3 times and he's only 3! Four times if you include whilst in the womb!
We do love San Stef and are hoping to go somewhere similar but on a different Greek island - anyone got any ideas/suggestions please?
Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give.
Cathi.

Ornos on Mykonos is brilliant. Unfortunately spelling not my most credible talent but if you walk up the hill (opposite way to Mykonos town) and down the other side you can eat where Shirley Valentine had her table in the sea!

Three words of advice .... stick to Corfu!

Just had a look at Ornos .... all those sunbeds!! No thanks - not for me. Reminds me of Nidri ...... my one 'lets try somewhere else for a change' experience, and I hated it!!!!

Stick to Corfu and visit St George South! Staying in the south of the island gives you a different perspective of the island with the bonus that if you really don't like it you can hire a car and visit the north!

Failing that, how about Elounda on Crete? Incidentally I loved Nidri but that was 17 years ago!

We love Arillas, but always thought that there were so many other places out there to visit. We have always chose small, unspolit places, but quite simply nowhere else compared. Stoupa, on Mainland Greece was quite nice, but the following year it was back to Arillas & its wonderful charm & lovely people.

I have heard good things about Elounda too .... but apart from the fact I also believe it is very expensive, nothing would tempt me away from Corfu now .... unless I won the lottery and could still have my Corfu fix AND visit oher places! Till then ...... Kassiopi for me

Although we stay in San Stef we always pop over now and again to Arillas to have lunch in The Portofino Taverna,Spiros the owner is hilarious and we usually meet up with some Greek chums there. So SaraD, can fully understand why you love Arillas and its people

I've been to Elounda and can vouch from first hand experience that it is very nice. It has a lovely harbour, nice tavernas and depending on which accomodation you stay in it has some lovely views over to Spinalonga. Public transport is also good. I've also been to Skiathos and that too is a lovely island. Some nice places on Rhodes too. It does no harm to explore other islands once in a while then you can decide which is your ideal.
I went to Nidri many years ago and have to say that I loved it then.

Hi Cathi,

We've holidayed in Acharavi for 16 out of the last 17 years. Have also been to Crete,Rhodes and Zante which we enjoyed but none of them have the "magic" of Corfu.
Going to San Stefanos NW,for the first time,in May but guess what ..... going back to Acharavi in August. I'm sure you would love it there, go on give it a try!

Cathi.
I think your right to seek a change.
Much as we love Kalami and San Stef on Corfu.
After many return visits you do become a little over familier with the location.
Having said that however we have allready booked for Kalami next May ( I couldnt resist the early booking) it was so reasonable, uder £500 for two weeks, for two.WOW.
We will definetly be looking for an alternative Greek Location for Sept.(fortunatly Im Semi-Retired,and spending all my savings. On Holidays rather than re-tirement home care.
There are so many options.(not re-tirement homes, Holidays)
Of course there is allways a chance you will regret ,the choice to change, nothing ventured, springs to mind.
We enjoyed Skala on Kephalonia, and Molyvos on Lesbos.
I wouldnt attempt to suggest destinantions for others though, its too RISKY.Have a good search and TAKE YOUR PICK. And if you fail and pick wrong, just think how Great San Steph will be ,the year after.
Good Luck,have a great time.

Good for you trying somewhere else. Greece has an abundance of wonderful places to discover, so it's best not to limit yourself. Corfu will always be here to return to. Wherever you go there will undoubtedly be groups of people who only go to that place every year. Perhaps you could even try to persuade them to try Corfu, we could sure do with more visitors:)

As far as Islands go, I would personally recommend Kefalonia, Hydra or Poros for very different reasons. The later two are smaller and very quaint. There isn't even any traffic on Hydra. Kefalonia is similar in size to Corfu, but very much of it's own character. Equally beautiful, in a different kind of way. If you like San Stephanos, you would probably like Fiscardo (North) or Skalla (South) though one of my favourite places is Assos (West) but that may be a bit too quiet for most people, but well worth a day trip.

The Greek mainland (often ignored)is also very beautiful, especially The Pelaponese which has plenty of historic sites to visit; Corinth Canal, Sparta, Epidavros and Olympia (to name a few)especially if you're into Greek history. The seaport of Nafplion is a beautiful place to stay and easy to travel around from.

It's really hard to tell what a place is like from pictures in books or on the Internet, so listen to recommendations from the good people here who have travelled and experienced a place first hand. Wherever you go I hope you have a wonderful time, you can't really go wrong in Greece. Don't forget to recommend Corfu to the nicer people you meet on your travels and don't forget to come back to us in Corfu - eventually.

Hi everyone

We went to Thassos last year and stayed in Golden Beach. It's lovely.......starting with the ferry crossing - very easy and organised - what better way to arrive on an island but by boat? the island itself is very pretty, Golden beach stretches for miles and ends up in Skala Potamia. In the hills above Golden beach lies the beautiful atmospheric village of Panagia and, on the other side, the village of Potamia. Both easy to get to on the local bus. So too is Thassos Town - a lovely capital with Ruins at almost each street corner, good choice of shops and wonderful restaurants with authentic Greek cooking. It is so easy to travel around the island too, I think it was 90km from start to finish - no islands and no traffic lights. e found it to be very reasonably priced compared with other Greek Islands - we did not have a bad meal, the poeple were friendly..........Greece like it used to be.

Thanks for all your help - lots to think about. If we go somewhere else it will be a different island, wouldn't consider going to Corfu but a different resort - would have to be San Stef! So it's San Stef as usually or a different island completely! Gotta think about our son too, he'll be 4 and a half by then so not very into historical sights etc.
Any more info would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Cathi.

Would recommend Andros. Just over an hour by ferry from Rafina. No airport therefore not over-run by tourists. Spent a very relaxing holiday there

Thassos is indeed a beautiful island. We stayed their in Sept 07 but have to say a week was enough for us. Panagia is one of the most beautiful greek villages I have been to and my abiding memory is of the wonderful pure water that flows from springs in the mountains above. We stayed in Thassos Town and loved it to bits. But, apart from these two highlights we were itching to get back to Corfu!

Yes I know what you mean SOOZ..Corfu surpasses everyhting else for me too and I consider going somewhere else in Corfu - but my heart pulls me back to San Stef which has the things I like the most. However, Golden Beach is a good resort for children with a very long, very white beach and beautiful clear Aegean Sea - the beach ends at Skala Potamia where there is a little fun fair and more shops etc. I really think it is a good alternative holiday - why not do both and blow the bank!

I am going to Paleo this year for a change cos the scenery is so beautiful! Did consider another Island but the Corfiot people are the friendliest greek people I have every come across. Elounda is lovely in Crete and the boat trip to Spinalonga is a must, the scenery is amazing there, it truly is.

Kefalonia great, lovely mountains and good roads. Western Crete, green, beaches, mountains. If you just want a beach holiday, Skiathos has possibly the best collection of beaches in Greece but small island and not much else to do. Greek Peloponnese my favourite, around Pylos area.. Pylos a great lived in local harbour town, + loads of history within driving distance on good roads. Lots of great places in Greece, if you never visit you won't know what you're missing

Elounda is one of our top places yet to visit along with Stoupa and Parga.
Georgiopoulis, Crete is wonderful and I will go back there one day. It's got a great beach, and a lovely square with taverna's all round it, a really laid back and peaceful place.
Would also second all the good comments about Thassos stayed in Skala Potamia, it's beautiful. If anyone is going would recommend Karumbusa taverna (not sure that's spelt correctly).
That's what I love about Greece, so many islands and places to go, all have their own character, some I like, some, not so much, but always somewhere new to try
