Well having just returned from 2 weeks in paxos I have had my faith in Skin so Soft as a mossie deterrent totally destroyed.........
It seems the mozzies were on top form during our stay as everyone we met had bites on arms legs etc.
We had Jungle formula plug in, Jungle formula Extra spray on lavender oil Citronella oil and SSS all of which failed to stop the blighters
The last night of hols I blathered myself in SSS as did not want to take bottle home.
Woke up next day with 6 new bites.
So have to say we will be looking for new solution and not giving Avon any more business

Tried alsorts to keep mosis off the only sure fire way is a spray with DEET in, a couple of years ago in Sidari my wife bought some citronella spray over here which i thought had deet in it as i never read the label, 1st morning we woke up i had 32 bites and Anne had 36 looked at the label on the citronella spray no deet so it was straight to the supermarket and bought a few sprays with deet in no more bites after that
As i have mentioned before on here i get a terrible allergic reaction with some bites and can usually sort the swelling within 24 hours by taking anti hystamine if that doesnt work its a trip to the hospital for anti biotics luckily ive only ended up in hosy twice with bites but twice is enough
Thats why i use plug ins fly spray before we go out and close all doors and windows and a liberal spraying of body spray repelant with deet all over heres a link with some info in it
I haven't been bitten for years, apart from the odd one, but this year came home with 25 bites!! To be fair ,I think around half of them were some kind of grass mite, but don't know for sure! They were all during the day and when I had been standing on grass! The last one was queueing at the airport!! Now I have to decide whether I should change from Autan.I have seen in the papers that the mozzies have been bad all over the Med/Agean this year, so hopefully it's a one off Moyra

As Tonynew states, it helps to keep your rooms shut up as much as possible, either doors/windows or shutters, or both. Our apartment owner made a point of telling us this on arrival to keep mosquitos out.
He has shutters covered in insect netting. When we went out we also tightly closed the windows/doors as well which kept the apartment really cool when the temperature outside was about 30.
Even when going sitting on the balcony, which we did most evenings, we closed the shutters or doors behind us and as a result it wasn't until almost our last day that a mosquito got in and bit me on the head during the night.
We also use mostly DEET based repellants and Citronella, but their effects all have limited duration and have to be re-applied.

Was bitten really badly this year and that was despite using citronella candles/sprays,skin so soft, plug ins etc etc!!!! Only thing that worked was a spray called "OFF",think it contained Deet!! Re-applied it every few hours and no more bites. Also used wipes from a chemist in Corfu town(given to me by one of the bar owners in SGS),they were good too.And last but not least, used Raid in the apartment!!! Worth a try. I am sure the mozzies have got used to all the usual remedies!!!

I wonder if they have altered the SSS solution. I've always used it, but yes, this year I too got a few bites. The Boots' own silver can of mozzie repellant did work wonders though.
Hi Sue can you remember the name of the wipes you had from the chemist?

But never fear "Mosquito Milk" is now available once again in the UK and can be bought online at Chemist-direct.
This stuff is incredible, and many who swore by it's effectiveness were lost when there was no longer a UK distributer.
We've already ordered 4 bottles to keep us going for a while.
Read online reviews of this stuff - it's only 20% DEET, but the other ingredients and the fact that you dont need total coverage makes it great - and it works!!

Thanks Trace, sounds well worth trying I've copied some of the details below if anyone's interested:
Mosquito Milk is simple to use, no hand contact is required and because it requires only a stripe, as opposed to all over spreading, on the exposed area it is very economical. The roller ball ensures a constant supply with no waste.
Tests show that only half the quantity of a conventional bottle is required, 50ml is the equivalent of a 100ml conventional product.
Insect repellent made with extracts of plant oil such as geranium, known for their efficacy against insects. Extracts are combined with 20% DEET (diethyltoluamide) content.
Frequently asked questions:
Is it suitable for tropical use?
Mosquito milk suitable for its tropical use thanks to its DEET content.
DEET common active ingredient in insect repellents developed by scientist at the U.S Department of agriculture and patented by the U.S army in 1946. DEET considered the gold standard for insect repellents.
Worldwide more than 200 million people use DEET to ward off vector borne diseases e.g. malaria
Does Mosquito Milk have a pleasant smell?
The majority of insect repellents tend to have an unpleasant smell which becomes worse when mixed with perspiration. Thanks to the inclusion of geranium in its formulation, Mosquito Milk has a fresh smell which is not affected by perspiration.
Is Mosquito Milk suitable for children?
Mosquito Milk is suitable for children over the age of three.

Hi Tina,
Hope you are well!
The wipes were given to me,by a friend in SGS and she said they got them from a chemist in Corfu Town, but not sure which one. They are "mosquito & Insect repellant wipes" Tropical formula by "Dr Johnson's" Aromatherapy based. Maybe you can get them over here? Looking at the ingredients they consist of lemongrass oil, eucalyptus, lavender oils etc,no mention of deet though!!!
Bear in mind that I used the "OFF" repellant as well,so maybe it was a combination of the two!!! Didn't have one bite though after using this combination!!!

Thanks Sue.....worried Corralejo may be too big for us, but got a good deal at £225 each for a fortnight. Just looking for some nice weather and a bit of chilling out. Hope we can at least manage to search out one or two Spanish places amongst the ex pat bars lol! T xx

We have a few bottles of Dr Johnsons mozzie repellant which we bough in Aldi over the last 2 years. We have spray bottles and roll-ons and have found they work very well. Unfortunately they only seem to sell them once a year as part of a special promotion so grab them when you see them! Looks like next year it will be Dr Johnsons, Avon SSS with back up from Boots grey mozzie wipes!!!

I bought a dozen bottles of SSS a couple of years ago and they worked fine this time so its probably a change of formula rather than the mossies getting immune.
Only 1 bottle left for next May so will have to try something else.
Will be using vitamin B tablets and eating lots of garlic for 3 weeks before we go so that should keep the mossies and our friends away!
