The mozzies pick up your carbon monoxide trail and home in on that. When they are near you, on final approach, they sense the 350 odd odours that your body has and if YOU smell right to them they will bite! Deet at 50% is pretty good for up to 5 hours but short of wearing a shell suit with balaclava and your nose covered in deet not much you can do! The word has gone round to all mozzie gangs about your arrival Keira so cover up and slap on the deet!!

The best tip we were given was to use Avon Skin So Soft, the blighters seem to hate it and is doesn't smell too bad either. My brother was hill walking recently and got bitten alive, whilst using insect repellant, by all the midges. He went into a local shop and even the woman there told him Avon Skin So Soft was the best thing. Good luck with it and we'll be at Corfu airport on the 29th too. Can't wait!!!

I've recently heard that hydrocortisone 1% is effective for the itch if you do get bitten. We just got back on Monday with the perfect score of "nil points" to the mozzies!!! No bites - fabulous - long may it continue! Moyra

Had an icky mozzie bite about three years ago when staying in Kassiopi, whole forearm swelled up. Went into the local chemist and she gave me a cream called Hydrofusion. It's a hydrocortisone and anti-inflammatory. Swelling went down overnight. Swear by this now. It stops the itching.
When in Kalami, a friend had an evil rash on her neck, she used this cream, and within an hour the rash had disappeared. Needless to say, she purchased some the next day.
I'm still using this now on the odd mozzie bite I get and it really does stop that annoying itch. It's prpobably past it's sell by date now though. Must get some more when out in Corfu again.

The cortisone/hydrocortisone sounds like a good idea, I'm covered in bites at the mo and I've got some in my medicine cabinet so I'll try it and report back!
However, just a word of warning - if you have young children who get attacked by mozzies please do think twice before applying anything with hydrocortisone in it unless it's been OK'd by the pharmacist or doctor. It can do strange things to little people - and if you've bought it for your own use over here the instructions will be in Greek and you may not realise it says 'don't use on children under the age of 12' or similar!

Thanks for saying that Bill, I believe that hydrocortisone thins the skin so is probably not good for little ones who are not as thick skinned as us
Have you tried the Avon Skin so Soft as I find that that works well for me.
If you want any brought over, we are out there again in September and can get some to you.

Just to let you know that I've applied hydrocortisone 1% cream (Superdrug brand and just slightly out of date - woops!) to 3 mozzie bites that had been irritating immensely ..... and it seems to work!
Haven't tried Avon Skin So Soft (don't have a local Avon rep in Corfu) although have read many good things about it on these boards over the years.

We always use Avon SSS - I'll pack an extra bottle for you Bill. Also it smells so much better than Deet! Just remember to re-apply frequently.
Another warning about hydrocortisone cream, do not apply for more than seven days, presumably because of the skin thinning aspect.
We have these horrible little black flies that have a horrendous bite - far worse than mozzies. Richard has even been to A&E with a bite from one of these. He has one at the moment and has been told to use hydrocortisone cream.

Thanks Sooz, that'd be great. I'm fed up with getting bitten to pieces, and my poor daughter looks as though she has a bad case of chickenpox at the moment, all thanks to the mozzies!
I normally find Germoline is a great soother of bites, especially as it has a mild anesthetic in it, although not everyone agrees.

Bought one of those Little Crystal Clickers, from the local Everything Store. Cost about £1-25 reduced frome £3-95 allegedly.Little Orange thing with Green Clicker.Unfortunatly Ive thrown the box away ,so cant tell you the name. Probably Little Zapper or similar.
Whilst we did get a couple of bites,if you zap them with the little clicker, they simply do not (or did not) materialise.
Its to do with crystals or something, sends a little shock ito the bite (10 clicks) repeat as needed. Looks like the little spark Gas lighters pruduce.
Sounds spookey I know ,but for us it seemed to work. Mind you we did fill the room with Bug Plugs,Citronela Spray and candles etc etc.
Anyway best of luck.If you see one get one its worth it.

I'm conducting an experiment on myself this year. Don't know if it will work or not. Im sure I will soon find out!
I am convinced that the more I apply any anti-mozzie solutions, the more I get bitten. Also I suffer from acute itchy arms for 9 months of the year and I'm sure it's because, living here in Corfu, I've been applying this stuff pretty much every day of the season.
I still get bitten though and my conspiracy theory is that these concoctions attract the mozzies, so you get bitten. Because you get bitten you go out and buy more anti-mozzie protection!
This year, so far, I've not taken precautions (ooooh-er) and I've not been bitten and I've not had the itchy arm thing.
I'll let you know in September/October if my theory has worked!!!!!

No, it's not prickly heat. There's no sign of a rash. I've only had this for the 7 years since we've lived here and also since I've been using so much anti-mozzie stuff. Nobody can tell me what it is. The pharmacy gave me a steroidal cream as a last resort but that didn't work either.
I've decided if it is the potions that are causing this, I'd rather have bites that itch for a while and go, to having this absolutely unbearable itch, 24/7 for the season.
I did start taking antihistamine tablets at the beginning of May as I knew I was considering this course of action. Thought it might help if I did get bitten.
So far, so good!
Trisa.

I was hoping not to be reminded about this ongoing topic but it was hell this year. I don't normally get bitten and have always used deet sprays and vitamin b but last week I was bitten a lot, mainly on the legs. Last year a maid recommended burning the spiral things during the day by the pool because they apparently bite then as well. Another point to mention for those staying in villas with cats in the vicinity. Check your seat cushions in the morning and found white hairs from a cat so there is a possibility that cat fleas may also be an issue.

I usually get bitten a lot. This year I had a reaction to the sun which made my back itch. The doctor gave me some hydrocortisone cream and tablets for this and it also helped to reduce the itching from the mosquito bites. There were plenty of lemon trees where I was so I rubbed lemon on my bites and they seemed to go down pretty quickly. I also had some plug in zappers that I left in all the rooms all week, the blue light ones, and I sprayed the bedroom with a fly killer each night a few minutes before I went to bed. I still got bitten but probably not as bad as I have in the past. The bites I did get were probably from when I was outside.

angie-kev-molly, the garlic capsules must not be the odourless ones or that defeats the object. Last year before we went I tried one of the normal garlic capsules & absolutely stunk the house out. The wife & daughter would not come near me for days.... so the rest went in the bin. We used Jungle formula "tropical" plus I took B1 for about a month before we went, lines the clothes in the suitcase with sheets of Bounce & not one bite between us....
By the way when are you going in August, we go 14th from Manchester, staying at Zafiris Appt's

Hi Lawrence/ maeve,
Yes it is the turquoisey bottle. Have the Avon catalogue in front of me at the moment. It calls it Avon Skin So Soft Dry Oil Body Spray, the turquoisey/ greeny blue one is soft/fresh. Get in quick as as maeve says it's just £1.75 per bottle at present online. You need to go into the sale section on the Avon site.
Hope this helps.

Hi maeve,
Yes you did. Just remember when you put it on, leave it to soak into your skin for a little while, otherwise it can stain your clothes. Not a major problem though as I have found that it washes out OK anyway.

Please try Mosquito milk from chemist direct, I used to get bitten really badly no matter what I used but since I have used this for the last 2 years I have not had one bite, I used to have to go to the doctors when I got home because the bites would be the size of golf balls. I got back Sunday from 2 weeks in Zante and got the whole family using it, it is brilliant. It's about £6 a bottle but that bottle will last 2 years, it is a roll on and you just put a stripe up the front and back of your legs and the same with arms. It even has a pleasant smell, I can't praise it enough but you can only get it on the internet.

As has often been said, I still think it's horses for courses. I have tried garlic capsules, vitamin B1, loads of mozzie sprays, but I find that the cheapest of all, Avon Skin So Soft, works for me. I think that it is just trial and error. We all have different skin, eat different foods, so what works for one person, won't necessarily work for another. I like this product as you are not putting certain chemicals on your skin or imbibing other things of which you don't know what effect they will have on your body.

I couldn't agree more! Over the years I've suffered from mozzies and other "attack-insects". I also tried everything imagineable - and some that weren't! - to be bite-free. Last time on Corfu I didn't have one bite! It did make a huge difference to my visit. What did I take?
Vitamin B1 started 2 weeks before I left and then throughout my stay: Boots 'Repel Extra strength -tropical' lotion applied liberally morning and evening - and any other time you fancy! Lastly but by no means least I consumed platefuls of Tzatziki the yoghurt, cucumber and garlic appetiser!
Remember though that what worked for me may not do so for you!

Courtesy of some advice on these pages, I took garlic tablets for four week before going to Corfu last year, and just had one bite during my fortnight in September.
It may have been a coincidence, but I should add on moving to Spain in March, I continued to take the odourless garlic tablets, and have avoided any problems here. Roll on Paleo in September!! By the way, my partner had horrendous problems with mozzie bites over the years, but no such trouble last year after taking the pills as well!! Perhaps we were lucky!

When I went to Corfu 2 years ago I started taking 'vitamin B1' tablets 2 weeks before we went. I continued with the tablets whilst I was there and was not affected by the mozzies.
I also used the Avon 'Skin so soft' before going out and Jungle Formula plug in liquid during the night .
This might seem to be a bit of a overkill but it certainly worked.
This might not work for everyone but all the advice you can get , the better.
If you are going to wear a shell suit make sure it is in the right area.
Happy holidaying!!!

No-one has so far mentioned the Marmite cure! Works in the same way as vit B1 tablets but if you like Marmite it's no hardship to eat some each day. Last year, Marmite and Avon SSS worked for me with a little added help around the ankles with Boots insect repellant wipes (the grey ones). I also use the Original Source Lemon shower gel.If you do get bitten then the hydrocortisone cream and/or tiger balm work well.

I got bitten loads this year, but in the past 6 years I have been going, never got bitten once - even though I went to the same report - Corfu town. Must be the perfume or body lotion I used this year, as my husband didn't get bitten at all. I found the more I scratched, the more they itched, and so the best thing is to try not to scratch them at all if you possibly can, although its a bit like torture.

For anyone with young children, I asked our doctor last year (my daughter was 1 at the time) what insect repellant I could use on her and the doctor receommended a cream called 'Crilon', you can buy it in the pharmacies here and it is very very good, doesn't smell too bad either. Unfortunately for my daughter the mossies seem to like the English part of her and if I dont' put the cream on she gets bitten really badly.
Oh and there are AVON reps on Corfu, just not sure who or where they're based, our local one stopped doing it but I'm sure if you contacted AVON then they'd be able to advise.
