P.A.W.S. seem to have run out of funding for the winter food for stray cats of the villages in Paxos. Thus, my partner and I have taken on the responsibility of feeding the cats of Loggos out of our pockets. We will be extremely grateful to receive any donations in the form of food. So, If you are on holiday in Loggos this year and would like to to help us, please can buy cat biscuits or tinned from any of the local supermarkets and drop it off at Chris and Christine's office. (Travel a la Carte) They have kindly said that they will act as a collection point for us. The office is situated on the car park in Loggos village. Thank you!

Animal welfare is very close to my heart and always has been so. A local family had three black and white cats, all sisters. Sorry to say one of the sisters had a serious kidney complaint and in the end the family and the vet had a decision that had to be made.
My grandson was devastated at the news. This one cat always remained aloof from the others and you could never make a fuss of her. Towards the end, she always came to us for affection. As I told my grandson, you can never make friends with a cat, they make friends with you. Those few last short weeks will remain in our memories for ever.
To me and my family, the Greek cat has a special shape, colouring and temperament. I have not found this elsewhere during my visits round the Med.
Also please let me remind you that there are also people on other Greek islands who require assistance to feed strays outside the holiday season.
Yammas, Colin.

I just want to say a big thank you to all involved on behalf of those of us whose visits to Loggos wouldn't be the same without the catty goings on from some of the wonderful characters that we've come to recognise and love during our holidays there.
If anyone wants a reminder of their favourites, you can't do better than to read this old but still hilarious postthat PhilMenai wrote some time ago.
I hope nobody will mind if I occasionally bring this post back up to the top of the list throughout the season so that it will jog people's memories before they go on holiday.

Rubycube- Any donations of cat food are very welcome indeed and can be left in Chris' office (Travel a la carte) on the Loggos car park or Mastoras supermarket at the top end of the village. Whilst we are on the subject - we have been completely overwhelmed by the generosity of holiday makers over the summer months. We (and, of course, The Loggos cats themselves.) would like to take this oppertunity to say a huge thankyou to everybody who has donated both biscuits and tins to help us feed the cats over the winter months.

Matty&Sarah,
Thanks for the info. Can't bear to think of those poor kitties going without food once the holidaymakers have gone home. I think that you are doing a fantastic job taking on such a huge responsibility and I can only hope that my small contribution will ease the burden on your own pocket.

We would like, through your message board, to - once again- thank those visitors to Paxos who so generously donated cat food for our "Village cat" winter feeding programme. Without your help these poor cats are without sustinance once the villas and tavernas close down for the winter. THANK YOU SO MUCH we appreciate your help gratefully.

If I had your address I would send you a parcel of cat food - I have never been to Corfu without making many feline friends and when I stumble home a just slightly tipsy my husband can do nothing to stop me feeding them the contents of our fridge.

At risk of upsetting people, and I have done my share of rescuing puppies, kittens and even donkeys, I wonder if it is a good thing to help strays to stay alive.
A few years ago the cats were admittedly in poor condition, so their life spans were short and they were a lot less fertile.
Feeding them makes them able to produce more kittens and live longer, but it does little to actually improve their lives, and all the time the stray community is increasing! This years pretty kittens become next year's battered tom cats!
Money raised to fund neutering might be more beneficial I am afraid

Jan, I appreciate your point about neutering being the long-term solution to the problem of strays. The main aim of the organisation mentioned in the first post of this thread, PAWS (Paxos Animal Welfare Society), is to help to fund visits by UK vets to Paxos a couple of times a year to neuter stray cats and carry out other treatments urgently required by the island's sick cats and dogs.
Over the years, this programme has performed operations on literally hundreds of cats and its success was brought home to me this July, when I noticed only one pair of young kittens in Loggos village, whereas a few years ago there would have probably been several dozen.
PAWS donation boxes are in travel offices and shops all over the island and I should imagine that a significant proportion of the Loggos cats that benefit from the winter feeding programme have also benefitted from being neutered.
If the adult cats that are no longer fertile were left to starve over the winter, then apart from any other considerations, the neutering programme would just be a complete waste of time, money and skill and a simple cull would be far more cost-effective and probably less cruel, but I can't see many people (myself included) being in favour of that approach.
The feeding programme run by Matty&Sara dramatically helps to improve the quality of life and health of the village cats and is complementary to the neutering programme run by PAWS. I hope that both get the help they deserve and continue to operate for many years to come.

Please what about Corfu cats? Is there a rescue centre or somewhere I can take them to? Is there one in town or what? I am very concerned = saw 2 kittens tonight not more than around 4-6 weeks old and the third had been run over. Please let me know where I can take them to in or around Messonghi/Moratika/Benitses/Lefkimmi. Thanks.

annmay - AAWF is a similar charity on Corfu working in much the same way as Matty and Sara do on Paxos. Our main objective is to neuter and in the areas where we can get enough of them done it does make a difference. After having neutered the cats it is then only fair to see that they get food in the winter time which we do.
The not feeding cats because of them breeding is not a method that many English people can accept, and is not the right approach, I could never eat myself knowing that cats outside were starving!!
Neutering is the accepted method and many Greek people are now beginning to accept this and come to us asking for help. We help as many Greek people as we can, many of them feed large numbers of cats making it impossible for them to afford to pay to neuter them. Many of them would if they had the money, so we do our best to raise money to help these people.
The answer to your question about a Rescue Centre, although we do our best to help as many street cats as possible by providing food in the wintertime and sterilising we cannot run a Rescue Centre because we would fill it in a day and no-one will take the cats to rehome them as everyone always has so many of there own.
If anyone in the UK wants to help feed the Corfu cats or Matty and Sara to feed the Paxos cats then the best way you can help is to make donations (via our website)for us to buy food or pay for sterilising. Unfortunately here on Corfu we are not permitted visiting vets and therefore have to raise money to pay for sterilising.
If anyone living on Corfu would like to help, please contact us we always need volunteers.
I am sorry annmay, we cannot take the cats as there is nowhere to take them to, the best thing you can do is to try and find someone locally who would help them. There are people who will help, you have to ask around.
We are located along way from Benitses and it is not possiblle to cover all of Corfu, we are a very small charity but do what we can, and everyone who helps is a volunteer, unfortunately there is not RSPCA type of organisation here in Greece.

Hi jjane p - Any donations of winter food for the cats of Loggos can be put into our box in Mastoras Supermarket in Loggos. We do have a box beside the feeding station but I don't think it is very secure - food seems to 'disappear'!! I hope I haven't missed you to reply to your post - I haven't been on this site for a while! Also - The PAWS vet will be here on September 20th for 3 weeks to do neuterings and there are donation boxes in various shops throughout the island!.
