I have spent 24 hours trying to give Ginny the street cat a tablet ... in desperation I looked on the net ..and found this:
A little something I found on the net sums it up nicely.
How to give the cat a tablet
Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat’s mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding tablet in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop tablet into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
Retrieve tablet from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.
Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy tablet away.
Take new tablet from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push tablet to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.
Retrieve tablet from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.
Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop tablet down ruler and rub cat’s throat vigorously.
Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another tablet from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for glueing later.
Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put tablet in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.
Check label to make sure tablet not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse’s forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.
Retrieve cat from neighbour’s shed. Get another tablet.
Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick tablet down throat with elastic band.
Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw Tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.
Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologise to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat.
Take last tablet from foil-wrap.
Tie cat’s front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push tablet into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash tablet down.
Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes tablet remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.
Arrange for RSPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.
How to give the dog a tablet
Wrap it in bacon.
Note from Jaybird. Please do not try this at home. No animals were hurt while carrying out the above .. though cat carer is now in mental home!!!

Tammy will take any tablet as long as it is wrapped in pate - well she is a pedigree!!!
I had got through half a tin of tuna, a spoonful of pate, a fish stick, a spoonful of fish pie .... and the tablet is still sat there!!! Problems holding the cat though because of septic finger from trip to vets with her yesterday
Still crying laughing though from reading the 'Instructions'.

I don't really know much about cats but I suspect they are more aloof than dogs!
We can reason with our dogs bribe them, cajole them
even, and they don't have claws

Grab the cat by the scruff of its neck and hold its head back, just think about what mum pusses do with their kittens, stuff the tablet in and rub its throat.......with your sixth hand (supposing it's not lacerated ...........then hide ...best of lick, oops luck.xx

1. Take tablet, place in pestle and mortar and crush finely.
2. Take shotgun cartridge, cut end off with stanley knife.
3. Pour contents into pestle and mortar and mix well (important, do not attempt to crush together, the propellant is a little unstable).
4. Replace the mixed contents into the cartridge shell and superglue end back on.
5. Load into shotgun.
6. Administer medicine from a distance of 25 - 50 yards (dependant upon choke on shotgun barrel) - (note, it is best to administer outside).
Ok, I'll get me coat........
No, its not funny, any children reading this, please do not try at home.............
Actually I like cats, we've recently been adopted by a beauty, I'm even finding myself leaving good food in the fridge instead of eating it just to feed the damn thing when it comes calling, turning into an old softy really....

I have to pill a cat daily, maybe for the rest of her life...and the first days were pretty much what Jaybird wrote--battles royal. She is so strong! The pet food store owner suggested "pill pockets" (a soft treat you can hide the pill inside). They worked for a while, until the cat learned to nibble the treat and leave the pill neatly on the floor (to be gobbled by the other cat before I could retrieve it.)
Eco, the vet did suggest a shotgun...well actually a sort of pill catapult (sorry). I'm getting faster at injecting that thing by the day, and spending less and less on Bactine.

Success ... well for this morning. Food and tablet gone!!! Result...only 11 to go (oh and replacement needed from the vet for the lost tablet yesterday).
Thank you so much for all your advice ... the cartridge shell did cross my mind after 6 hours of trying and the tablet still being locked in the safe (anyone want a Houdini kitten - oh and her accomplice the Garfield look a like).
Ginny is such a lovely cat (partially sighted) - until she gets scared and then she is very much a 'Street Cat' and fights like one which makes any chance of holding her to give her a tablet impossible ... and dangerous ... anyway just going to apply another layer of germolene to my hands and put the bandages back on

You have the patience of a Saint...Ginny sounds like a handful.
Our cat or should i say Steph's cat "Jingle" is exactely the same,he adopted us 10 years ago when we moved into his house.
At first was really grumpy with the odd tantrum, now in his latter years he is all over us,and when we have given him a tablet have managed to conceal it in his food.
Cats really know how to be in control of any situation.
Best wishes.

You can get a syringe type thing from the vet or pet shop which holds the pill, you open the cats mouth pop it in at the back of the mouth, close the mouth and rub its throat. Works for us every time.

Thanks Petergm ... the problem is we can't even keep hold of Ginny to open her mouth I tried to hold her at the vets and it took the two vets and I 10 minutes to catch her again ... she then had to be examined and injection given in the cage. She is a lovely cat - just very scared - and after all she is a 'street cat' not a pet ... I keep telling myself that ... another application of germolene needed

I know how you feel. We have two brother cats and one is twice as big as the other one, why we don't know. We had the same trouble at the vets as you have, until we used that syringe.

As a person owned by 11, oop's now 12 cat's I have had to give tablets, paste, wormers, and I am proud to say I still have 8 fingers and 2 thumbs;o))
Some of ours are a piece of cake and some are, well let's just say not in he mood.
But a trick I have learnt, where ever possible dissolve the tablet (you may have to crush it first) in a little water in a syringe and then squirt it down the cat's throat. Not harm to them 99% of medicine given and as stress free as possible for all.
Of course there are some drugs you can't dissolve but thankfully none of ours have needed those ones.
As to wormers I rave about the granuals or paste. Mess to a degree but still better than a tablet.
An alternative for flea treatment is Garlic for Animals. Not sure if you can get it in Corfu but Dorwes do it and do export it. Our Rebellion takes his garlic tablet each day whole with no hassle. He thinks I am giving him a treat;o))
Hope this helps.
But also have to say I do love all the instructions you get in e-mails and on line. I find my self chuckling away to myself:o))

Ah yes, that does remind me of bathing our oldest, Coco is a Burmese who decided to show us how to paint properly!!! She jumped into a tray of paint then ran round the house leaving her foot prints everywhere!!!!!
Thankfully our show cats are Maine Coons and they love to play in/with water. So bath times isn't to bad for these guy's:o))
Alas wish Flur (our 10mth old who stopped due to a bad heart murmur and FCK problem) would stop joining me in the bath each morning. Because of the heart I have to make sure she is bone dry again.
She loves to sit on my lap when I read in the bath of an evening or weekend!!!!!! Add bubbles and she sits in the bath with me playing with them:o))
Have to say these are all old little ditties, but then the saying goes "the oldies are the goodies" So so true:o)

Hi Jaybird, I'm glad that your cat took the tablets after all, It's a nighhtmare, been there done that, the last resort for me is putting it in a tiny bit really tasty food at lunch or teatime, so that the pussy is really hungry for anything practicaly, then I feel that it may be a kinder way too.

Tonight is proving even more problematic .... Ginny is stuck 7 foot up a tree - chased there be the street dogs! Maybe a peashooter would be a good thing after all - if the tablet misses her mouth it may just knock her out of the tree.

Ha ha will bear that in mind Sue. I have failed so far with the tablets - I will have to get some more from the vets and try again. I was meant to call the vet and tell her if the tablets have done any good!!! Will have to admit I have only got Ginny to take two so far

Sorry Jaybird, I have to tell you about little Sabrina. Unfortunately she picked up a little sniffle at her first show. So i got her checked over by our vet and we decided to cover her with a 5 day course of antibiotic's. Now I love Synulox as it comes in liquid format. But no they have changed at what was prescribed wasn't available in liquid form.
So poor Sabrina had to have half a tablet twice a day. Oh my god she is an Angel. I would say "Tablet time Brinny" and she comes and sits waiting for the tablet which is popped on her mouth and she just swallows it:o)) What a little princess she is.
Sorry, just had to share. One in a million and the loadest purr you have ever heard. Guess she will be stopping;o))

I'm not promising anything, but let me have a chat with some breeders on the yahoo groups I am on. I might be able to come up with some help or advise.
What are the tablets she's on?
When you say sniffles are we meaning a type of flu? if so which? there might be alternatives.

I have no idea what the tablets are ... they are small, round and blue.
Ginny was born with cat flu, is blind in one eye and constantly has a 'slobbery' sound about her. The vet says she has sinusitis and that is what these tablets are for.

Thank's Jaybird I'll keep you posted with what information I can get back for you.
A good natural help for respiratory infections is garlic. Not to sure of the dose as I use a dorwest product specially designed for cats. I give it to Rebellion as a natural flea repellant, but it can also ease respiratory problems.
Bare with me and if I get any advice I'll let you know

Ok the first technique I have been shown is called the clothes peg http://www.felinecrf.org/giving_sub-qs_giving_set.htm#clothes_peg_trick this link explains all. Have to say I don't know if it would work with Ginny, especially when you are trying to build her trust rather than destroy it.
Alternatively there is this option which has been sent to me with this comment after I checked in was OK to forward: Yes you are more than welcome to copy and paste my reply where ever you'd like.:) The best of luck with her, she sounds like she's in great loving hands!
Is it crushable? There is a product on the market here in the UK called Thrive.
They are dehydrated chicken, prawn and fish treats. they can be broken up into a powder. They are highly palatable. My suggestion would be to crush the pill up
with these and sprinkle them onto the wet food given. Or even on it's own. My other suggestion would be to mix it with some golden syrup, anchovy paste, pate
or malt paste and smear it on the cats paw or straight in or on the mouth. Be
sure it's smeared thinly down towards the top of the paw other wise it will be flicked off.
Hope this helps. I've had a few cats attached to my head trying to pill them so
I do know what she's going through! :)
If you can't get hold of any of these items to crush the tablet in, please PM me your address and I will pop to the shops and get the treats for you and post it on to you.
Hope this helps
Love Em

Off to the shop for the Greek equivalent of dairylea.
I went back to the the other liquid antibiotic just to try and stop some of the sniffles and get Ginny to eat (so at least I have a fighting chance of hiding the tablet in something) - gave her small amount of milk and as she seemed to want it I quickly squirted the dose into the milk - milk finished .... medicine in bottom of bowl ...grrrrrrrr

I think if it is in the milk, even though it is left at the bottom I would bet she got a little of it, Fingers are crossed it all works out.
Just another idea, smelly fish ie: sardines in tomato sauce. That often works well.
My fingers are crossed for you and I'm thinking of her. send me a private e-mail to kingtonks(please us the at sign)yahoo.co.uk if you need me to send anything or I can help anymore over the weekend.

I'll be thinking of them, let me know how they get on Monday.

I DID IT!!!!! I gave up on the tablets and decided to try and get some antibiotic medicine into Ginny - something being better than nothing. So tonight I tried cream cheese, chicken and milk and no luck - then I snapped grabbed her by the scruff of her neck ... her mouth dropped open in surprise and the syringe of medicine went straight in

We have a Greek cat, who has been with us in Holland since she was tiny (with her two sisters which we unfortunately already have lost). We brought them over 10 years ago. They are sweet but when the medicine comes out of the cupboard they turn into tigers. The cat we have left now also sometimes needs medication. We crush the tablet and mix it with a little honey. We put it on a spoon and then put it on one of the front paws of the cat.Because cats are very clean animals they hate it and start to clean the paw with gusto!
Now its just getting the sticky stuff on the paw and not you...............
Good luck!

Just finished the course of antibiotics for the 3 cats - easier towards the end as the had their appetites back so I could lace their food - just had to make sure all three ate their own food and ONLY their own.
They are all so playful now that they are better - such a relief.

I loved the description recently of how to bath a cat, laughed out loud!
I took on a 'motherless' kitten a while ago, and it rewarded me with five septic teeth marks. My hand looked like it was covered in plague pustules. I went to ER locally, who gave me antibiotic cream and a ticking off, and I had the cat declawed. Now this is Canada, and hardly any cats go outside! It is too cold in winter, and summer is so short. I have loved all my cats, I even catsit for others, and nurtured 13 feral cats too.

Hi
Im new today and would like to say a big thank you you to all of you on the subject of feeding cats tablets.
This morning my Hubby and Brother-in-law tried to give our adopted cat a worming tablet, but to no avail, poor mite wailed like a banchie.
So I have dispatched hubby to the shops to get some more Flora Marg as the cat (Mo) loves the stuff. So Im hoping we will get a result, mind you that's if the cat ever comes back lol.
Thank you for a great site

After many years of trying to worm cats, I found there are only two ways that work:
1. Use the liquid you drop onto the back of the neck - that will also cause the cat to explode away and can't be let back ito the house for 24 hours or she'll pee on something as revenge.
2. I bought a small plastic thing that holds a tablet. The cat is then wrapped tightly in a towel so she is completely immobile. Except for her teeth. With care, force the pill between her clenched (and sharp) teeth. Push it way back, beyond the point where she can spit it out. Put the wrapped cat carefully on the floor and step back. Hastily. See above about revenge.
Number 1 is actually relatively simple, but it doesn't do all worms, although it also protects against fleas and ticks, so she has to get the tablet at least once a year.
She's 10 years old, which presumably translates to around 70 in human years. I just hope I'm just as flexible and agile at that age.
I also have two dogs: I just drop a tablet on the floor and the labrador eats it; the terrier is suspicious so it needs to be wrapped in ham or chicken and spread with butter to make her grab and eat it. Still, much easier than the cat.
