Next June is my partners 30th, and to console I would like to go to greece. Ive been searching for a fairly quiet villagy type destination, typically greek, with nightlife centred around local tavernas.

Travel guides can be very variable when describing places, can anyone give me any suggestions?

Messonghi fits the bill, it's an ex fishing village. Well I say ex, fishing does still go on. See my descriptions under Pantheon Hall Hotel in the resort  thread for Moratika, Messonghi and Benitsas, for more detail. I love the village, but as I'm biased  I'm sure others will give you lots of suggestions, alot of villages in Corfu will meet your criteria. Happy hunting

Hi Gilly

From the description you gave of your desired location, I would not think that Kassiopi, would fit the bill.

To my mind, it is what I would describe as a town, although the tavernas are fine, there are also quite a few of what I would call music bars, which can sometimes be quite load.

You might consider San Stephanos Sinies (NE)

There are 4 tavernas, all with a different feel and atmosphere, 2 bars, which do play music, but not too load, 2 mini markets, 2 tourist shops, 2 hire boat outlets and 1 tourist office. The village is at the head of a sheltered bay, often used by sailing flotillas for an overnight stop. All the accommodation is self catering villas and appartments, many with pools. The companys that let that I can think of are CV Travel, Meon Villas, Something Special and Simply Ionian, there must be others but I cant think of them.

You might also consider Agni Bay, with 3 tavernas it could suit the bill, but there is not very much accommodation directly in the bay. And there is no village as such, but Kendroma village is just above it on the main coast road with one Kafeneon and no shops.

I'm sure you'll be inundated with alternatives.

Good hunting,

Bob.

I would have to agree with Bob, and also reccommend Agios Stephanos (NE). Although we have just stayed two weeks in Kalami and had a lovely time, we enjoyed the walk up the coast during the day and are now considering staying in Ag Stef next time we visit Corfu.

We found Ag Stef suited us a bit better than Kalami and still gives you the opportunity to come down to Agni on the water taxis at night. It's also pretty close to Kassiopi so you can have a bit of a wilder night out if you fancy it. The two supermarkets in Ag Stef were the most well stocked we came cross during our two week trip. The staff in all the tavernas were wonderful and friendly and during the day the wee resort can get "nicely" busy with day boats popping in and out......great for those who love a bit of people watching !!

Hi Gilly

Would have to agree with several above, Ag. Stef. N.E. seems to have the edge. Down sides (balance in everything) is being 'Villa country' prices tend to be significantly higher than most other spots. If you've lots of loot to spend that won't be a problem though. Another point is that since it's not a 'working' village there are not many 'authentic' locals about. You don't  mention that you require to be on seafront so maybe you could try inland villages/ small towns (nowhere is far from coast however) e.g. Acharavi, Pelekas,Perivoli, Lefkimi etc. , where theres always plenty going on but not so much touristy stuff, but still enough to make it a traditional holiday.

North West resorts (Arillas, Ag. Georgios, Ag. Stefanos (N.W.) are less developed it's true, but apart from restaurant staff and mini market owners and the like Greeks tend to stay away apart from Sundays.

Have been going to different Greek Islands for the last nine years!!

Went to Acharavi on Corfu this year for the 1st time and, I must say if you want a reasonably quite resort with some really nice Tavernas, good beach and some excellent holiday accomodation, I would highly recommend this resort. We stayed at the Matoula apts (booked via Unitet/1st choice) and they are the best/cleanest and well looked after apts we have ever stayed at in nine years.

They are clean, with excellent facilities, polite and helpful staff, a good size pool, plently of free sunbeds and will do everything to look after you. We will most certainly return again very soon (have been to Sidari/Corfu several times and would say Acharavi is far more relaxing and laid back.

PS;- I will be 50 in december and the wife is 52, with two girls of 22/24 years, trust us? you will not be disappointed.

i'd agree with the comments about ag stefanos above - it still has a quiet, laid back attitude, but is close enough to the north east coast road to explore the islands other coastal villages.

if you don't want to hire a car, there is a great, reliable, economical bus service nearby - but car hire is reasonable, and the best way to explore the real corfu!
