Just thought I might mention a new wood yard for firewood for all the "winter" residents of Corfu. We just had half a ton of olive firewood delivered to our house in Sinarades. It cost 55 euros ( a bargain when diesel oil for the central heating is 80 cents a litre!) and was delivered the same day.

The Greek lads lifted the wood out of their van and helped us carry it through the hall to stack at the back of the house. They were so helpful.

They are on the road near to the Expo centre, on the opposite side. If you are driving from Corfu town out towards the Gluppos taverna, it is on the right hand side near to Skondo market. They even speak good English for anyone who is still struggling with the Greek language.

Wow, Janet!

That's a really good price; I think I remember seeing the place in October - is it the 'scruffy' one that does carbona as well?

Yes  they do charcoal as well, but it was clean and tidy when I went the other day. They had  plenty of stock, but they were doing a lot of business. It is very wet and grey at the moment, and keeps going warm then cold.

While we were there last month we had a very large truck load of olive fire wood delivered although it was cut in lengths of about 40cm or so some of it was 60cm which I had to cut with the chain saw, the larger pieces needed splitting as our wood burner does'nt work very well unless the wood is relatively small.

This cost us 50euros, and stacked neatly is about 3 cubic metres (1.5x2x1)

The last time we had a similar load delivered about 3 years ago it was 90euros.

I do love the way olive wood burns slowly but with a good heat output and a pleasant smell. Now we are back home I already miss the familiar smell of the wood  fires burning in our neighbours chimneys when outdoors.

We just put the word out in the cafeneon that we need some wood for the fire and hey presto a couple of days later it just arrives.

Bob.

We are not yet Winter residents or even full time residents but as we are coming to stay for a couple of weeks in december we shall certainly need some firewood. Can anyone give me more precise directions to the wood yard you all recommend as I don't recognise the direction out of Corfu town by the description. I don't know what/where is the 'Expo Centre' or the 'Gluppos Taverna'. I suspect this is because our house is in the North West of the island and we use different landmarks.

Even better has anyone   got a 'phone number for the wood yard then I can order it in advance to be delivered as soon as we arrive as I expect it may be cold (and damp) in the house and we have no other form of heating - as yet.

Any information on the above would be most welcome. Thanks.

It would be easier if you found a local yard to deliver if you live in the North west. Ask the locals where they get their wood from, they will soon set you in the right direction.

It might be a good idea to bring an electric blanket with you as well . Not only do they keep you warm, they help to take the damp feeling out of the bedding as well.

Nothing wrong with good old hot water bottles.

Any form of heat will do, when we very first bought some white goods in Corfu Town, at that time there were no other places to buy things like that, we bought a cooker and a  fridge, the stors insisted that we also buy an electric radiator a fan and a couple of those round pitta tins. As we were not paying but they were being added to our friends taverna account to be paid as and when, we had little choice but to accept.

All still going strong, the electric radiator is a real boon as it can be moved from room to room where it is needed most.

Prior to our arrival last October, our friends Molly and Paul, popped in the day before and put on our heaters and Wendy's electric blancket all on low, just to get the house warming up.

Where would we be without our support networks of friends.

Sarah, dont forget you'll also need some kindling (off-cuts of tongue and groove planking is perfect) and newspaper is still the best thing to start a fire going.

Bob.

Yes Bob, don't forget the kindling. It used to take me forever to get the fire going as I assumed it was wood so easy to start. Assume olive wood is coal and then you will know that to start it you first need to build a fire with newspaper and then wooden sticks and when you already have a fire going then you can add the olive wood.

I spend every morning collecting kindling from the garden .............. I also have a couple of dustbins full of dry sticks stored up for wet days.

Most of our 'rubbish' gets put on the fire - that gets it going well too!!

Thank you for all your helpful suggestions - and you are right, I should find somewhere local for firewood. It would make more sense but it may take several days to organise and as we are arriving late on Saturday night I would love to be able to get the fire in the kitchen going by Sunday afternoon.

We have no heating in the house here in Gloucestershire so I am a very experienced fire-maker. I start a fire every evening with anything I can find.

I am afraid our ancient wiring in Corfu would not tolerate electric heaters and the last thing I want is to blow the fragile system or overheat the wires. Then we really would have a warm fire. I shall have to go for Calor gas heaters for the rest of the house until the long overdue renovation takes place next year.

On another matter does anyone know where I may be able to get duplicate keys cut? For the two main doors they are a dull grey composite metal and huge! The working end of each key is solid with a series of dips and ridges parallel to the shaft of the key. I cannot imagine how a replica could be cut - they look 'moulded'. Suggestions welcome.

There are key cutters all over the place - loads in Corfu Town......... whereabouts in the NW are you??   There is one in Karousades.

The problem maybe the type of lock you have though ........ maybe you'll have to just replace the door/lock??

It might be wise to change the locks eventually anyway, as you don't know who has had access to keys in the past.  It might even be easier to change the locks than to try to get a similar key cut.

The key cutters shop in town has a huge array of key blanks and two machines that cut keys. You walk past the police station just off san rocco square and it is at the top of the street on the right.
