Anyone know of a haberdashery anywhere. Now I've got the time to handicraft by candlelight-had a few power cuts lately!- I was out and about in town and couldnt think of where to get all the bits and pieces. There are plenty of curtain fabric shops and I tried one shop in the Jewish quarter who recommended Psilikas but they didnt have anything like t-shirt stretchy material or eyes for rag dolls, embroidery thread etc...
a cup of cocoa, some crossstitch and a good old Corfu thunder and lightening storm--ahh bliss!!
thanks
Tracy

If you get up as far north as Acharavi try Hermes. Right hand side when travelling towards Roda, about 50 m further along from Demitiris Market. I'm not certain about the dolls eyes but I'm pretty sure they do embroidery thread...

There is a really good shop called Tantis in the centre of Corfu town. It has underwear/gloves/tights/nightwear in the window, and inside is a treasure trove of buttons, ribbons, sewing cottons, dylon dyes, sequins, feathers, safety pins, etc. etc.
I can't remember the name of the street, though! It's the one that comes down from the open-air market on to the main shopping street, and is on the right hand side if you follow the traffic flow.
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, I've never been in Tantis shop I shall give it a try and the other suggestions, well I've never been up to acharavi for years, its a good excuse for another little mystery tour. We had a wander around the south of the island last week, down to Kavos and Lefkimmi, kept turning off ythe main roads, got lost going around the Garounas-sounds painful I know!!-when it came time to try and find our way home came across a great road sign, sign posted Corfu Town arrows pointing both left and right!
Thanks again

I've got 3!! and thank goodness for it, its never far from reach and it got read a lot last week--it was the only way I knew that at leastI was heading in a northerly direction. When it was back in the glovebox we were using the sun and the sea as compass points, it was like the good old days of exploration except we were sitting in a comfy car munching croissants and crisps. I've not got too bad a sense of direction, as soon as I can see the mountain with the big ball on top I know I'm homeward bound. I wouldn't have been too bothered about hurrying back except hubby needed the car to go to work and in last weeks weather the chances of him being happy at the thought of riding Molly (thats what we call the moped) dressed in his suit would not have made my day, I mean his day!!
ps has that mountain-hill whatever got a name?

To reach the recommended shop in Town go along the main drag from San Rocco towards the Liston, take the first turn on the left and the shop is about thirty metres up on the left.

Not sure exactly which turn it is as you come from San Rocco - but if you get to M&S......you've gone too far!!!
It does look like an underwear shop from the outside, I'd agree with that..... walk through that little section & the area you need is down a little flight of stairs.
Hope this helps.

I found the shop this morning and it has everything I needed. Top class info as usual!!
Thanks for the name of the golf ball mountain Becky, it sounds a lot more assuring to guests to say-'Oh theres Agia Deka we'll be home in two ticks' rather than 'keep your eyes peeled for balls on mountains-dont let it out of your sight!!'

After Kath's experience in Hermes (as per above) I thought I'd ask if they did any embroidery threads etc when I popped in there earlier today.....
They do have a goodly range of silk threads (kept in boxes under the counter), some aida (although it was the sort with designs printed on), plus ribbons, buttons, elastic etc. They also have a reasonable range of material. They don't seem to have any stretchy fabrics though nor teddy eyes!
Just thought this might be useful for future reference.... They also stock cheese-graters (which is why I was there in the first place!)

If any crafty enthusiasts are interested there is a Christmas Craft Market taking place in Sinarades 5th and 6th December opening from 3.00 till 9.00 in the afternoon. This is the second year we have had the market, all of the participants are Greek ladies from the village with the exception of myself, I am English and the organiser who is Italian.
We organise it to coincide with the Church's saints day 'Agios Nickolas' (6th December) There are lots of things to buy including lovely homemade cakes.
Would love to meet anyone who can come along. I will have the hand made cards table.

Hi Tricia. I will definately try to make that. Will be a double bonus for me as I love craft markets and was in Sinarades with Dave (White Van Man) doing deliveries yesterday ........... I have fallen in love with the place.
Hopefully see you on the 5th or 6th - I take it you run a stall .... what do you sell? Will make it easier to spot you!

Count me in too, I'm just round the bend in Pelekas. Will you have christmas cards on your stall?
Chris, you've just brought to mind something thats been bothering me off and on. Do the online stores like Amazon etc deliver to Corfu. Being in a village I dont have an address per se but a po box number. We get coffee capsules delivered from the greek nespresso site, but the local delivery guys know the island. Letters from the Uk are taking about 3 weeks to arrive and parcels perhaps longer.

ps I found another haberdasher in town, once you gave me the clue that like tantis they sell underwear aswell, I kept checking out the little side street shops. Couldnt find eyes for my rag doll though, ended up painting them on it was easier.

I get Amazon stuff delivered here and I don't have a house or street name. I just put my name, Karousades Post Office and the rest of the address and I've never had a problem.
Tracy, I think you've found Kritikos / Maria's, was it off of San Rocco near Stock House and some Chinese shops? This is the haberdashery I use for my sewing supplies, I'm surprised you didn't find eyes though! Have you tried Ebay?

Thats exactly the one I meant, I went in to find some baby tights for my doll..it would have been cheaper to buy one!!...and I was quite overwhelmed by what was inside and the prices, unfortunately they were really busy at the time and you know what its like inside, there wasn't much room to move about so I didnt have a good rummage. I'm just going back this morning to get some more supplies.. I dont know what I'm going to have a go at next, I've finished the doll and finished the cross stitch so I'll just see if anything inspires..Thanks for the Amazon info. I'm a voracious reader and buying books in English here is a bit expensive even if you can find the authors you like.
