I would appreciate any feedback on excess baggage charges on charter flights. I have been aware of this creeping in in the last two to three years. My sister has just returned from Gran Canaria with Brittania (TUI) and she said that they were very strict on the outbound from Newcastle and people were being charged. On the way back they were ALSO strict and charging people, which I have never heard of before. They even weighed the beach umbrella as part of their luggage.

We fly out on Friday from Newcastle with Kosmar who have chartered a Boeing 737-400 from Islansflug (Icelandic). Does anyone know of anyone being charhed excess baggage with this airline of the despatch agents.

Hi Barnie,

Baggage allowance remains the same, 20kg per passenger of main luggage, and 5kg of hand luggage.

There was a thread started on this forum (which I am unable to find at this time) regarding this matter. New regulations have come into force that states that baggage cannot be more than 32kg because of Health and Safety regulations for baggage handlers. If you are 32kg and over, you maybe asked to empty some of your luggage, either into another suitcase in your group, or leave behind. You will still be charged for excess baggage over 20kg subject to which airport. So far we have never been charged, either at Gatwick or Bournemouth, although a friend did have 27kg, and she had to pay a £12 fee.

Some Tour Operators only permit 15kg of main luggage. You are advised to check with your TO, and check your tickets on receipt.

I hope this helps you.

Best Wishes.

Hi Barnie

I don't think that there are any hard and fast rules, they CAN charge if you are over the weight limit but don't always do so.  From the thread that Sailor mentioned I have to admit to being quite nervous when we checked in for a Brittania flight to Corfu, (from Gatwick) although Debs has nothing to wear it seems to weigh quite a lot (oh OK I do need a lot of shirts too!).  We were about 7kilos over the limit and not a word was said.  On the way back having discarded part used toiletries we were still overweight by 2 or 3 Kilos but again nothing said.

So the same airline and no action, the flight was not full and that may have had a bearing on it.  I seem to recall that the limits used to be 30K and I wondered if the airlines reduced it to 20K to try and stop us all exceeding the 30K limit?

I suppose in time we will all be weighed and our baggage allowance dependant on our weight! Afterall there must be a maximum payload that they can cope with.... It would mean certain diet for me so that I could take enough shirts!

I am flying with Kosmar/Islandsflug in September from Bristol, it is only a week this time so hopefully we will keep within baggage limits, but I will be interested in your experience.

Have a great holiday.

Chris

I was charged excess baggafg on a Tomson flight returning from Corfu last year but not on the way in.

I was 8 kilos over but 'negotiated' it down to four by looking sad and stuffing bits into my pockets.

I think they were having a blitz as there was an enormous queue at the excess payments counter.

JMC 15Kg + 5 hand baggage.

They do't seem to care that you go to the duty free and load up with ouzo and 1.2 Kilos a litre!

We got done last year for about £40 but I did pack a couple bottle of wine and ouzo inside. This year I carrried all my books in my holdall and then put the ouzo in at duty free. It's about teh same price anyway.

I'll be honest and say that I don't miss teh wine as greek wine isn't that good anyway. Give me a Mythos anyday.

I cannot find the previous thread concerning the carrying of booze home. The idea was to transfer your wines, spirits, etc, from their own bottles to plastic bottles, therefore losing the weight of the glass bottle in all cases. Got to be a saver in weight surely.

Its an idea, is'nt it.

Best Wishes.

It seems absolutely pointless to tell travellers to take out stuff from their suitcase and put it in their pockets - the place will be carrying it all anyway.

One of the funniest sights I saw was on the very first charter to Athens out of Gatwick. The check in girls had never encountered Greeks travelling back to their country, and could not cope with the microwave ovens, duvets, giant mixers and other consumer goods that they were trying to get onto the plane along with their giant suitcases. And of course being Greeks and therefore impervious to the word of authority, they would not take 'no' for an answer. The check-in was steam-rollered! Maybe this is what to do - just insist!

Having just travelled out from and returned to Bournemouth airport with Palmair (Sailor Please note) the baggage allowance was 20Kg per person and hand luggage max 5kg. The hand luggage weight is supposed to be taken out of the 20kg! If more than one person is travelling, therefore combined allowance is 40kg, no one item can be more than 32kg.

My hand luggage consisted of a photographic rucsack and weighed 6kg. I was asked to reduce it to below 5kg, which I did by removing a video camera and carried it over my shoulder. Allowable!

Needless to say when we came back we were heavier,Metaxa etc.etc but I dont think they even weighed the hold luggage.
