Hi Folks,

just discovered this forum - hope you can help.

I have not travelled in Greece before, but I will be travelling to Vonista in July and need a little help with planning my journey.

Currently available flights to Preveza airport from the UK involve a long stop over at Athens airport (arriving Athens some time after midnight - departing for Preveza late afternoon), so my questions are:

What is Athens airport like for a long stop over?

Is there a place to leave my luggage to enable a trip into the city?

Or in attempt to avoid the long stopover -

What is the long distance bus service to Vonista like? Timetable shows a 3 hour jouney, but I have been told it is 5 hours.

Can anyone recommend a local travel organisation that might be more knowledgable about Athens/Preveza flights and/or Athens/Vonista bus travel?

Thanks

Thanks Nige...

My trip to Vonista involves a work related element and I'm scheduled to be in Greece from the 31/7 to 9/8 - 10 days.

The airlines you suggest offer 7/14 night return flights. 7 nights is no good and 14 is a little longer than I want to be away for on this trip.

I'm based 20 miles north of Birmingham (UK), so have a reasonable choice of airports. The organisation sending me to Greece provide a £500 travel budget!

New “Eleftherios Venizelos Athens International Airport” has earned a great number of international awards, as one of the best airports in the world.

There are many things to do, like shopping, eating, relaxing, plane-spotting, internet surfing, even praying in the church. Over 50 selected shops and 14 dining facilities with a wide variety of specialties operate in the Shopping Centre of Athens International Airport. There is also a permanent exhibition dedicated to Eleftherios Venizelos and the excelant Airport Archeological Museum. The airport also hosts cultural events, including painting and photography exhibitions, book presentations etc. The Airport's Retail Park is very close to the airport. You can spent a lot of time there, visiting 4 superstores: IKEA, Dixons, Leroy Merlin and Factory Outlet (a discount clothes and footwear superstore).

If you want to take a nap or a shower, there is also a 5 star Sofitel Hotel, but it’s expensive. See more info about the hotel here: http://www.sofitelathens.gr/en/

The airport provides dedicated storage space where travellers can safely leave their luggage. Look here for their price list: http://62.103.163.50/UserFiles/File/travelers/services/baggage/150709_pacific_pricelist.pdf

There are buses, metro, suburban railway and taxis, connecting airport with Athens center. All of them is running 24 hours. My suggestion is to take the metro and be in Athens in 30 minutes. A return ticket will cost you 10 euros. Syntagma station is the city center, Acropolis station is very convenience for visiting this unique monument and Monastiraki station is very close to Plaka area.

If you want to travel to Vonitsa with a bus, take the X93 express bus from Airport (arrivals level) to the Kifissos Coach Station (KTEL). You will be in the bus station in 45 minutes and the ticket costs 3,20 euros. There are many daily departures from there to Vonitsa and the trip’s duration is 5 hours. You will also have the opportunity to cross the new fantastic Rio-Antirio Bridge.

Hope that helps, but feel free to ask anything you may need. You can also click on Athens International Airport web page here: www.aia.gr for more info. I wish you the best for your visit in Greece.

Thanks for a great reply - will take more time to study all of the information later this evening.

The bus time table I have found here

http://www.athensinfoguide.com/buslinessummer/busTT2.htm#Lefkada

suggests a 3 hour journey.

3 hours on a bus I can live with, 5 hours I'm not so sure - anyone clarify 3 o5 houres to Vonista?

Can someone point me in the direction of a travel company or web site that deals with Greek internal flights?

I would like to do a little more research on flights between Athens and Preveza, I'm sure there must be more options than the UK based flight searches are showing me.

Thanks

There are two major greek airliners, www.olympicairlines.com and www.aegeanair.com. Only Olympic flyes to Preveza.

Search in their on line booking system or use www.airtickets.gr, which is a travel agency.

Thanks all - mostly sorted now.

Expedia kept throwing up the best choice of Athens flights.

Olympic airlines have provided a suitable connecting flight to Preveza.

Probably a 5 hour coach journey back to Athens though!
