Can anyone tell me how much (in euros) a taxi should cost from the airport to Philipas (Filipas) restaurant in Gouvia? What should I expect to pay for an average lunch in Corfu Town? Same in one of the little villages? There's a restaurant at Kanoni overlooking Pondikonissi and the runway - would you know what a snack would run me there? What is the cost to rent a small car (jeep) for one week? I am trying to figure out how much to take along with me - haven't a clue what things cost these days - last time I was in Corfu was 10 years ago, and the drachma was in use.
Would really appreciate a ballpark figure for any of these things.....So I don't get hosed, for instance, in a cab from the airport to Gouvia. Thanks!! Love and light, Carin

SCRIPT>Like to help you on that one should not cost you a lot as gouvia is just out side Corfu town less than ten to fithteen euros i would inmagin...(But don't quote me on that one)And the restaurant that is over looking the runway a snack should be about the same price of a taxi fair.....When you come out that restaurant there are some steps that take you down to the bottom as there is a small harbor there and of course the lovely church there to walk over to and there is another small little tavern at the bottom right on the sand to see the church from as well....And you can walk along the causeway so you are right under neath the plains as they come in to take some pictures as they land...The price of jeep have a look at the price on this webb site to give you an ideal of the cost of a jeep www.kassiopi.com there are places in gouvia were you can rent from also...Chris SCRIPT>SCRIPT>

Corfu Lunch starter 3.50 main 8 glass of 2.50 (say 15..)
Jeremy - Thanks ever so much, but, please clarify what you mean by " 3.50 main 8 glass of 2.50" Do you mean the main meal and a glass of wine? I'm stumped at this message? Sorry - maybe I'm just tired, and I realize language usage differs between us. Try again? Love ya, Carin

Chris - your suggestions and advice are always so helpful - Bless you - I have been to Kanoni each time I came to Corfu (7 times since 1978) and believe it or not, I've never been in that wonderful little church!! I plan to visit some churches and monasteries this time, so thank you again, for the tip on how to get down there from the upstairs restaurant.... And the prices you quoted will help me. (Of course I won't hold you to it, just using them as a guide) Love and light, Carin

Never been Hosed - must be a USA thing - sounds interesting!!
Nah, it's not interesting..... "hosed" means being taken advantage of; usually when it comes to money....the one who has gotten hosed, is the loser. Lucky you, if you never got hosed. Thanks for the estimations in costs. Your input is very helpful......Love and light, Carin

Jeremy, since you say you never got hosed, and I never "did it" in a cab, we both might be missing something..... Carin

Hi again . when you want a cab somewhere (say Airport to Gouvia) ask how much first and agree a price - when we went to Corfu in January I asked in the airport and was told 5 euro into Town, the cab driver asked for 8 so I sai 5 euro or nothing, trip cost me 5 Euro!!
If you eat at a taverna ( not a snack bar) they will charge you for bread (Doen't matter if you want it or not) its really a charge for the table.. I normaly ordr some Tanziki so I am suggesting that as a "Starter" you should allow 3.50 Euro (less In Villiage) I went on to say that a main meal would cost a further 8 Euro (Fresh fish could be Double that!) and that a Glass of beer 2.50 Euro making 15 euro in total - Would normally leave a tip of 1 to 2 euro ( I tend to tip more in the Villiage for some reason - good idear if you want to go back!!
hope that clears things up.

Hi Carin,
Not much I can add to the good advice you have already been given, except that the Taxi Fare from the Airport to Gouvia will be 15-17 euros. Just check with the driver first.
Not long to go for you now--looking forward to seeing you in Ashley's!!!
Cheers Brian and Sheila

As I go to Corfu for a long time each summer, and the dollar is so weak, we have to budget pretty carefully. I would estimate that if you allow about the same per day (or a little more) than you would for spending money on a holiday in the US, you will have it about right.
We are a family of 4, and spend about $200 per day for all of us. This works out at about 150 euros. Some days we spend a bit less, some days a bit more. As you are going for less time, you may want a more comfortable budget. We don't spend much during the day: a light lunch and snacks, in the evening we have a taverna meal - either a lot of starters, or 2 or 3 starters to share and a main course each, and we go out for drinks afterwards (but certainly this year I will be avoiding expensive imported drinks and sticking to local beer and wine). We often have water with our evening meal as we stay out drinking late. In June, you should be able to get a decent deal on a jeep which will probably be your biggest expense. My $200 a pay living expenses does not include accomodation!
Good luck, I'm sure you will have a lovely time,
Carolena

MANY, MANY THANKS FOR ALL THIS INFORMATION - Now my vacation will be relatively stress-free (as far as expenses go), since I know what to expect and will be prepared. I'm not a drinker - one Bailey's Irish Cream will do me for the night and I'm sleepy before I get to the bottom of the glass.... (no fun at all if I attempt to drink) so I'll save money there.
I'll be volunteering at the donkey sanctuary for a time, so won't be spending much money on those days. It's always been a tradition of mine, since my first trip, to start the morning at the fruit store, buying a kilo of figs, putting them in my knapsack, then heading out for the day. Any idea as to the cost of a kilo of figs? Will they be in season in June? I've always been there at the end of July/ August and the figs were as big as my fist....Can I hope to enjoy such manna from heaven the first of June? Again, thanks for any suggestions.....You guys are all so thoughtful, helpful and beautiful. Jeeeez, now I'm getting sappy.....Love and light, Carin

Carolena - your comments offer me some peace of mind and put me in touch with the reality of spending in Corfu (from a dollar standpoint) Now I can make sense of most of it...It's a real shame that our $$ are not worth much. I won't bring back tons of gifts this time - but I won't begrudge myself a fine time either. This vacation was a long time coming. Bless you for your input. Love and light, Carin
By the way - what you call starters, we call appetizers - finally figured that out!

Carin,
We just returned from our trip and i think it's safe to say that Carolena is pretty spot on. we found we payed maybe a little less than we would around our smaller towns here in the US (not NYC or west coast prices) for food and all (though our 5 nights at the Corfu Holiday Palace was cheaper than comparable US hotel would have been). Beer was a bit cheaper, but food was about the same. The Kanoni restaurant across from the little church seemed in line with what we pay for starters and snacks in our NC town. (But the view is so much better).
Loved the little church. We visited in the evening and the woman at the small gift shop didn't speak a word of English but was so excited to take us to a back room to show us her 3 day old litter of kittens. It was great!
We found that our taxi fares in and out of corfu town were always about the same and never felt like the taxi drivers were trying to hose us. We met so many friendly helpful people that we hated to leave.
Have as wonderful a time as we did!

Thanks so much, Dillyb - Great detailed rundown. Was this your first trip to Corfu? If so, I guarantee it won't be your last.....if you've been there before, well then, you know. Can't stay away for long. Very glad to hear you loved it...there's a commercial for Sara Lee baked goods that goes "Nobody doesn't like Sara Lee" Well, nobody doesn't love Corfu, either.....Love and light, Carin
P.S. Of course we know the grammar is incorrect, (the double negative being "nobody doesn't") so the meaning then becomes "everyone loves Sara Lee" - Likewise, everyone loves Corfu - just to set the record stgraight. Thanks!!

Hi Carin.
Yes, it was our first trip and yes, you're right...we'll be back. Went without the kids this time and would love to bring them soon. Also went a little early....water was very chilly...but loved sunning ourselves on big rocks around the point from the little church and Mouse island. Drove around and saw quite a bit, but there's still so much to see!

Carin, Just a silly thought. Sun cream is much cheaper in the US than in Corfu. So much so, that I try to pack enough to last us the whole summer.
Re. presents, for those you have to buy for, I stick to small gifts, like calendars with pictures of Greece / Corfu, small candles etc. You can easily get small gifts for people without spending much at all.
If you are not a big drinker, I think you may well find Corfu a little cheaper than the US. Four of us can have a great meal for E60 or there abouts, add on drinks and it goes up a good bit. I would estimate around $20 per person for dinner if you have a main course and share 2 or 3 starters. Add about $5 if you also want dessert. Hope this gives you a bit of an idea.
In the day, we stick mainly to drinks frrom the supermarket apart from bottled water and the odd diet coke. A can of pop in the supermarket cost 55c last summer, so I would say that is more expensive than a US supermarket but cheaper than a drink machine in a shopping mall etc.
Hope you have a lovely time,
Carolena

Make that 34 hours - my flight into New York (from Florida) was changed to one hour earlier - so that my wait at JFK airpoirt will be one hour longer until my Olympic flight to Athens. Then, my flight from Athens to Corfu has been changed from 8:50 pm to 9:45 pm, which turns that delay from 9:00am to 9:45 pm (one hour later than originally planned!! Jeeeeezz, one can grow old whilst waiting for connections. I'll be close to delirious due to lack of sleep, by the time I hit that pillow. Wish me luck....Love and light, Carin
