You can't get to Corfu or Kefallonia by ferry from Athens.  From Athens (Pireas or Rafina actually) you can get ferries to most of the islands apart from the Ionian ones.  The Cyclades is a popular group for island hopping - lots of small islaqnds with good ferry connections to eachother and to Athens.  The island group nearest to Athens includes Aegina, Poros, Hydra and Spetses.  All of these are worth visiting and are very different in character from eachother.  You can also go a bit further away to the Dodeconnese islands.

To get to Corfu, you can take a bus or train to Patras and a ferry from there or a bus to Igoumenitsa and a short ferry crossing to either Corfu Town or Lefkimi.  You could also fly to Corfu, Kefallonia or Zakynthos from Athens and island hop around the Ionian islands.

Hi Ya.Sweeny....I would say the same as to the above post all the islands mention can be reach by flying dolphin out of Pireas....Or you can get on the bigger ferry's and do the back packers way on down to the islands of Paros and take in Santoreine and kos as to island hopping there are no shortages of places to stay as they meet you of the ferry's as you arrive and you can get good deals as to were to stay....The island of Paros is the gate way to all the other island Parickia being the hub of it all some five million tourist past through this port alone in the holiday season island hopping....Chris

...Its great fun on the flying dolphins..As to when the boat gets up to speed they open the back doors so you can venture out side to the stern of the boat..Chris

OK, guy's thankyou for your advice, proberly the one thing that has realy helped  was given to me by Sandyaway,.... buy Island hopping the bible, great book full of very good help and info. So i fly to Athens in early June arriving in Athens at appox 4am yes that's right, my choice that will give me time to take the bus from  the airport to Pireaus, approx 5o mins, then hang around for a while to catch first ferry to Paros, from there who know's Santorini, Mykenos, Andros, Tinos and many smaller islands, getting exited at the thought will let you know how i get on.

Hi Sweeney.      My advice is ,. go to the farthest away island first. Santorini and hop back,  you can control the timing better for your return trip.  I would not consider Crete as it is too far and you would miss out on a lot of the other islands to do this.  Stick to the Cyclades.. to move into the Sporades or the Dodeconese lanes is hassle. best done seperately ..unless you have    loades of time.. !!!  travel light.     K
