It was announced today that Thomas Cook has bought My Travel. Any Coments ? Are there really any competition between the different travelcompanies at all ?

They say that they will be able to give us a wider selection of more interresting places to visit, but when it comes to big companies starting to hold hands i start to think. "Cost effective", "Shareholders interrests", etc.

It will be the same old service as usual, pack them in and take as much money as you can

Be very careful with the wording on this one....it's actually a merger, and not a takeover. I know at the end of the day, as far as we're concerned, the outcome won't make much difference.

As some will know, I've been following both this, and the prospective availability of First Choices package holiday arm for some time (MyTravel will now no longer be buying this sector of the company).

The big travel companies already have us exactly where they want us, and to be honest I can't see this development making much difference....

Hi all

We agree with you, Travel Agents make the prices up as they go along anyway.

I think more people will book direct although maybe not as cheap at times but you are at least independant and not lining their pockets.

Strange that this merger has been announced today. Yesterday I was checking a holiday in a North African country. TC quoted one through a MyTravel company. I then checked the same through the MyTravel company. Same resort, same hotel, same departure airport, same flight, same date. The only difference was the total cost of each, this was after all the extras were added. There is a chance only the higher price will be offered after the merger.

It looks like nothing will start to change on that front until June.

There's also the potential that prices may actually come down a little........you never know!!

Well at this rate.  I think I will go by land and sea.  Take an extra couple of days either end of the holiday and enjoy the scenery coming up/down through Europe.

Have a longer holiday. I like the sound of that.

What long term effect will this merger have on Corfu, particularly in resorts where both companies have operated side by side?

With the overall decline in European package holidays, we could see some of the less profitable accommodation units dropped from future brochures.

I guess the resort reps should (generally), be OK, but middle management may well be in line for pruning. Obviously, admin facilities will be cut back where duplication occurs.

Looks like High Street Travel Agents will be targeted, with no new leases being signed for shops with less than three years left to run on their current agreement. This is more than likely due to the high number of internet whizzes out there now!

The parent company are blaming us independant travellers for declining profits in the bucket and spade market (sun and sea type packages), and cuts will likely be made in this area.

Rep wise, I can see them going the way of Thomson....very few resort reps at all, and barely any transfer reps......with a 24 hour hotline as a replacement

As has been mentioned.......I wonder how this will affect Corfu?!?!

I saw watch dog the other night about some travel companies insurance policy...?

I was wondering about alternative travel insurance. Whats available out there...

also does anyone know about long term med-insurance
for instance; do some credit cards have med-cover on them..? or is that just a rumour.

Roseanne - what has travel insurance got to do with this thread!?

Barbara & Bernie - "We agree with you, Travel Agents make the prices up as they go along anyway".

Please don't confuse travel agents with tour operators!! We travel agents have nothing whatsoever to do with setting the prices - we just buy what the tour operators are offering at the price they are selling it to us at!

Re Airtours and Thomas Cook, it still has to go to the monopolies and Mergers Committee in Brussels but I expect this one will go through even though they will end up with a 52% market share. There is unlikely to be an impact on Corfu this summer but it inevitably meams less flights next year, or, more importantly, less flight-only seats on offer.

They were within a spit of doing the same deal with First Choice and their package holiday business is still up for sale so there is going to be a lot of consolidation in the market over the next 12 months, not all of it good for Corfu, I think.

A completely different subject, but if you shop at Tesco, Sainsbury or asda you'll find leaflets with details of Travel Insurance.

Likewise the post Office or your bank will be pleased to sell you some too, or even a good old fashioned insurance broker.

All will almost inevitably be cheaper than the Travel Agent or Tour Operators.

I don't think we all do just pay whatever the holiday companies ask and travel with them anyway.  They grumble that more and more people are travelling independently but that is partly a result of rip off prices and bad service.  I stopped ggoing on package tours in 1989 after I had a particularly bad experience in Spain and decided never again!  The success of ryanair, easyjet etc. shows a certain unwillingness to blindly follow the tour companies,
