Good morning!

I am flying out tomorrow morning and staying in St Georges South. I was just wondering about the availability of cashpoints there. I'm sure I've read somewhere on here that there isn't one, but that may have been a post from last year.

I am so looking forward to visiting the island for the first time and would apprecaite any assistance that you can give.

Many thanks.

Simon

Hi Simon,

the following links should bring up ATM's in Corfu:

1. visa

http://visaatm.infonow.net/bin/findNow?CLIENT_ID=VISA

just select Europe - Greece- Corfu at the prompt

2. Mastercard

http://www.mastercard.com/atmlocator/index.jsp

insert Corfu as town

Thank you for your help. I seem to remember someone saying that the airport one had been shut down.

It will be no problem I'm sure, one way or the other.

I have done a search through the internet, and have not come up with anything with regards to any ATMs in Agios Georges South, in fact most reviews refer to the lack of an ATM. However, quite a few of the reviews stated that Travellers Cheques can be exchanged at certain locations in the town/village. I will add, if you take trips into Corfu Town you will find many ATMs to use.

Best Wishes.

I did try and look and indeed couldn't find anything.

I'm surprised, as most tourist resorts, no matter how small, in Europe have one or two plugged into the side of shops if nothing else.

I've decided to take currency - the rate is quite good today.

I presume that we can get an Visa/Mastercard cash advance if necessary from a bank?

I should think there would be no problem with your last question. We always take currency (our preference), but have our cards in case of emergencies.

You will have no problems on this front.

Best Wishes.

For the first time I've had the chance to look through all the messages and am a bit embarrased about opening another thread on this issue.

I'm putting it down to excitement at the prospect of my holiday.

Very useful information, and some VERY nice people on here.

Thanks once again

Hi Soz.

No need to be, it can take some time to flick through all the topics and posts, particularly if you are fairly new to the site. And with the added excitement of going on your hols, it can be better to just add another post, it will soon be referred to another topic or moved to another topic with a message to you saying where it has been placed.

So asked away to your hearts content mate.

Best Wishes.

Hazel, most tavernas that accept credit cards will also take Maestro - we certainly do.

Look at www.mastercard.com there is an ATM search on this page for where you can find ATM's.

What I failed to say above is Maestro is part of Mastercard and normally where you can use an ATM which takes visa it will also take mastercards and therefore maestro,

Seeing as I started this thread, then I can confirm that there is a cashpoint in St Georges South, on the main road towards the north end of the resort. All the usual cards, and it certainly worked for me, although some of the questions about 'inter-bank withdrawals' or something like that was a bit confusing!

Just a word of warning to anyone who relies on a card and atm's for their holiday cash.

I went to my local Tecos and went to withdraw cash and because of a fault in the atm it swallowed my card and took me over a week to get my new one.

If this by chance does happen in Corfu, think you could be stuck for cash.

Worth thinking about anyway.

Hi

It pays, therfore, not to rely on just one card.

Bring back Eurocheques, that what I say!  Much more simple and allowed much greater flexibility.  When sailing (when we find really out of the way little bays and villages) it's not always possibel to find ATM's, places that accept credit cards or, indeed, places to change travellers cheques.  Always managed to use Eurocheques though. (It is, however, getting easlier to find ATM's but you need to head for the bigger isalnds and the biger ports.)

The cynic in me is inclined to believe that the banks weren't making enough money out of the system, so they pulled the plug.

Martyn

what about oldfashion bank notes.

I think you get more vallue for papairmoney from your own country when you change in corfu.

and best of all you dont have to worry about taxes.

My advice is to avoid carrying cash sums of money on the journey.  Travellers Cheques are insured and cash cards need a pin and can be cancelled quickly if stolen.  Cash, once lost/stolen is gone !  Of course, as a footnote, I have to say that Corfu has a very low crime rate.
