It just occurred to me (For no particular reason) - how does the postal system work in Corfu?  With our move to Karoussades hopefully early in the new year - how do we receive post?  As I understand it the name of the house (Asper normal no street name) was one given to it by the agents and will not be commonly known.

Is there mail delivery in the villages and small towns?  Do you register with the local post office and collect mail?  How does it work?

I thought we had covered all the bases with our research - but missed this one!!

Interested to know....

Hi Phil

I have not found much on this but i think post is left at the local Kafenion and you have to pick it up. Someone will correct me if i'm wrong.

I have found this on the Greek Life section of the site.

Pension. The postman brings the pension at the beginning of the month. The local elderly queue outside while he counts out the cash to each entitled person. On one occasion, just as I went in for bread, he called me over and asked if I could take 300 Euros to Olga in Agni bay - as she had not arrived yet to collect it. it is great to live in such an honest society.

Hope this helps you

Kev

Hi Phil and Julia

The process up till now has been that mail is delivered in bulk to the local kafenion, then you go and pikc it up. However, a new system is being introduced. The P.O. is gradually setting up banks of mail boxes in the villages. I don't know whether Karoussades has one yet, but it will come, so collecting mail will be easy. I suppose you would have to make an appplication for one of the boxes - I'll see if I can find out the procedure.

An alternative is to apply for a P.O. box in the post office in Acharavi.

The local postie knows everyone, and even strangely addressed envelopes will reach you. The main town P.O. redirects everything to my mail box in Town, even if it is addressed to Afra, or to any of my old addresses. It's an excellent service.

Hi

We've just returned back from Corfu (sigh!) and we went to the local Postal Office on the road towards Ermones and paid 10 Euros (one off charge) to buy a Post box, one of about 16 at the top of our road in Afra/Ag. Ionnis  a really nice lady there wrote down the address we should use, and the whole thing took about 10 munutes.  No need for ID or anything.  They can take quite large envelopes A3 if folded!! but anything too large is left at the office and a note is put in the post box to tell you to pick it up.

Hope that helps

cheers

Denise

Hi Denis.

That is some good information for future use. I would imagine this would be the same system used by other post offices or authorities authorised to do this, in other parts of the island.

Best Wishes.

Hi everyone, this is my first post. My name is Con, and I am a Greek-Australian living in Melbourne Australia.

I usually come to Corfu every summer to escape the dreary Melbourne cold. In the last few years I have become a prolific Ebay seller, and my feedback reputation is 100%. In part, have to thank the Australian Postal Service and their efficiency for this.

I am contemplating on moving permanently to Corfu, and continuing my ebay selling in Greece. However, my only worry is the Greek Postal Service. Are they as efficient, and quick?

Are there any other Ebay sellers out there?

Hi Cons.

Put it this way the mail gets to its destinations, but can take sometime depending on when it is collected. As you have seen from the posts above at present all mail is in the process of being deliver to a PO Box system, either direct or a local delegated person will distribute the mail to your appropriate box.

The essence of Corfu, so laid back, relaxed attitude. If you want it you go and get it, if you dont it stays in the box.

Thats the short and tall of it all.

Best Wishes.

I have not had any problems in over 2 years of sending things to Corfu, they even delivered it to our friends' PO Box when I left off some of the address.

For properties in the outlying areas of Gouvia a PO Box is used.

Why on Earth you were charged is beyond me.  This service should attract absolutely no charge at all unless they have to build you a pigeon hole.  Oh well.

Your reputation on ebay will fall to around 60% should you rely on the Greek postal system for anything more than a letter.  I got  aparcel last week (pretty battered) that was sent from a friend in the UK as an Xmas present in november !

Why should the P.O. offer boxes free of charge? Having a box is optional, and something that of course you pay for if you choose to have one. I paid 50 euros for mine in Corfu Town this year, so 10 seems like a very good deal.

I don't see any problem in popping down to the local Kafenion every couple of days to collect your mail.

It would, of course, be impolite not to have a couple of Oozos while you are there.  .

Actually it isnt a problem anyway as the owner of the Kafenion (Alex's mum) calls us over when she see's us to give us the mail or sometimes Alex delivers it.

(For those of you that have never visited Taverna Agni, Alex is one of the waiters there.)

Just to confirm the 10 Euros paid is pretty much a deposit, if you nolonger require the bix you get the 10 Euros back.

So a pretty reasonable deal.
