Is it safe to drink the tap water in Corfu, am staying at apartments.?

When we went to Zante couple years ago could not drink the water, but in my guide book for corfu it says it is safe to drink.

Havea 6 year old daughter so must be safe.

Some info on this please. ?

hi victoriarose

we find it ok for teeth brushing and making a brew, but it does taste a bit different

however,i have got to say that a change of water in this country puts my tum off,so i tend to either-buy water and keep in the fridge or buy steratabs from the uk chemist and then decant into bottles for the fridge

my other tip is put some plastic bottles of water in the freezer(only fill to 2/3 to allow for expansion)then if you go on a walk, take a cold one and a couple of frozen ones and hey presto-chilled water, hours after you have set off!!!

its safe enough for the corfiots to drink-but they are used to the different mineral content(bit like different areas in the uk)so just be a bit cautious-not because of cleanliness, just because your not used to it

have a lovely time!!

Hi Victoria,

It not so much that the water isn't safe, it's just that it has a much higher mineral content than the water we're used to consuming back home.

This in itself can cause a few tummy upsets for those who are not used to drinking the water.

Personally, even if I am told that water is safe, I still use bottle water for drinking, as I don't like the strong taste the water has.

Hi Victoriarose ,

I think you will find that most of the locals buy their water for drinking . Tap water is used mainly for washing and watering gardens .

It also tastes foul!

Bottled water is incredibly cheap to buy, about 1.5 Euro for 6 bottles.

I always freeze my water to keep it cool. I empty about a third of it out, freeze the rest and then top it up when I take it out, then you dont have to wait ages for it to defrost!

thanks for the replies, will stick to bottled for my little un, but its nice to know if in emergency can use tap water, it wont strike me down immediately.!!

Flying out on Friday evening from Luton, never tried a night flight before. But it might be a better bet with all the delays !!

cheers everyone!

I find this all very strange as we have always drunk the tap water with no ill affects. I think it must be something to do with where you live as everyone in our village drinks the tap water including the visitors of the English families who don't have time to get used to any bugs as they only come once a year for a week or two. We have just been out for a meal with friends whose parents own a house here and they have been giving their 2 year old water straight from the tap with no problems. As for tasting bad I actually don't like the water in England as it has so much chrorine in it. The best water I have ever tasted out of a tap is at the donkey sanctuary which is just like spring water. However, do remember that at this time of year the water goes off most days for a couple of hours so many people still use the sterna or a reserve tank (especially the hotels and appartments) so I would say that it would be unwise then to drink the water. Just ask locally what the water is like.

On the same note, We have just been to Athens for a few days with the grandchildren. When we got there we mentioned that maybe we would have to put the toilet paper in a little bin. They were so disgusted by this that I popped down to reception and asked and they told me that those days where long gone. Thats the other thing I find so supprising that people are still being asked not to put paper down the Loo. I can understand it if you are close to the sea as we wouldn't want to polute the water there so there are no soakaways and the sewerage has to be pumped out, sometimes every day, but in villages where there is room to build large soakaways just what is the problem? In the UK our soil pipe is 4 inches, here it is over 6 inches. Many of our neighbours have been putting everything into their soakaway for 20 years and never had it emptied and if they ever did it would only cost around 200 Euro.  For 10 Euro a year I think it's worth it.

I always drink tap water in Corfu and never had a problem. But if you don't like its taste, bottled water is very cheap.

This is one of those things that is discussed fairly regularly and people have always had different points of view.  Some are quite adamant that the tap water is completely undrinkable and others are equally happy to let their children drink it.  We all have to "agree to disagree" on this one.  [:)]

Like Graham says, the taste may vary from village to village but we haven't had any problems from drinking the tap water on any of the Greek islands we have been to.    Of course, we also drink the tap water in the UK so, if we can survive that, we should be OK in most places.  [;)]

Like him, I have tried the water from the hose at the sanctuary and it tasted like nectar.  Mind you, I had just spent a morning in the baking sun shovelling donkey poo, so I would think even the water out of the sterna would have seemed quite appealing!!  [o)][]

Over the years the quality of water in Corfu has changed, for the better.

When I first visited Aghios Gordios 14 years ago it had two water sources. The supply from Sinerades was quiet saline whilst the other side of the village was supplied from Kato Garouna & was very drinkable. Since then the water quality has improved no end.

The mineral content is higher than in the UK but it causes me no problem. Bottled water is so cheap but you have to hump it to your appartment. Buy bottled water for the children but try the local water yourself.

first things first,

the water has a slimming factor.i lost 4 stone in 7 days.only joking.

the mineral content,what?.

if the bore hole is far enough from the sea there is more chance the water is good. in the village's near the centre of the island the water is better than the coastel areas.

must be volcanisaty.

oh yeh 451 post's 3*

all the best, andy
