Hi All,

I wonder if anyone could help please. I need to find out how much it would cost to ship a car over to Corfu. Has anyone got any information of how long it takes, costs etc. Also which companies do this service.

Any information very much appreciated.

Karry

Wouldn't it be cheaper to drive it over and save on your airfare at the same time. You could also take out some items for your house from the uk.

Hi Doug,

Afraid not possible, Hubby already over there and I wouldn't think of driving all that way on my own. I actually did sugest it today to hubby, he nearly had a heart attack at the prospect!!! Mind you i would probably end up God knows where.

Hi Kary,

I can understand you not wanting to drive all that way by yourself. I'm planning to drive over next year, but I'm hoping to take a friend with me - for company and navigating!! Then they can have a few days holiday with me before taking a one way flight back home.

Would that be an option? Could still work out cheaper for you.

Hi Debbi,

Just found out today I can send it over with a company called Mondial for £850 + VAT so just under a £1000. But I can fill it up with as much stuff as I want, and it will take just a few days, so thats probably what i'll do.

Hi Karry

Don't forget to arrange for transit insurance if you go down this route.  Also, note that you can only keep your car in Greece for 6 months before it needs to be registered in Greece (and for that I think you need a residents permit and tax number etc).  Also, you will have to pay local registration tax.

Also, if you intend to return the car to the UK after the 6 month period, ensure that either your UK road tax doesn't expire or you make sure that you complete the SORN.  If you don't you will be liable to a fine upon return to the UK.

Hi Martyn,

Thanks for the advice, have you any idea how much it is to register a car in Greece?

Hi Kary.

As Martyn is not on site at this time, and I read your post, I have found the following web link that will be of interest to you, with regards to your query.

Best Wishes.

You can't fill a SORN out anymore when taking the car abroad if you don't want to pay the road tax.You would have to export it and then re-import it when you bring it back which is very expensive.  Also my insurance company assures me that my insurance is invalid if the car is not taxed and MOTed. This has all come into play since the recent new goverment car tax computer was introduced.

It is also now not possible to insure your car in Greece.

Another thing to watch out for is that most companies now only insure you for up to 4 weeks abroad and you have to pay extra after that. The only company I found that gives unlimited time abroad is Saga and you have to be 50+ to insure with them.

Hi Graham,T

Thanks for the info, i didn't know that i wouldn't be able to fill in a SORN, i thought i would do that later on. I told my husband to send me back the tax disc and i would do it later, but looks like we're going to have to change plans. Do you know why we wouldn't be able to insure the car in Corfu?

Many thanks

Kary

I have found that it is alot easyer in our case (as we have a old escort that is coming to its end) to just drive that over to take stuff over and back than get a new one as there is a long and i mean long list of things you have to have so its just not worth it .have a look at the corfoit one on the other page!!!

Have now given up plan to take car over, far too much hassle, and as the car is 10 years old it's not worth it. I was hoping to packstuff into the car but will have to make other plans.
