I'm not the right person to answer your question, as I really love flying. I have a fantastic time every time I'm in an airplane.

Just think that statisticaly airplane is the safest way to travel.

Magik, we had someone come on holiday with us last year that had never flown before.  They were obviously a bit nervous but also excited at the same time.  Just so you'll know, once everyone is aboard, the stewardesses will run through the safety spiel for about 2 minutes while the plane taxi's to the end of the run way.  The captain will then ask thm to take their seats for take-off (passengers will already be belted up).  The plane will then start along the runway and as the accelerator is poured on the engines/wheels make a bit of a roar (this is normal).  It gets to about 200mph or so and before you know it your up in the air and climbing.  Once you're up it really is fine.  Seatbelts off, drinks, food, sleep if you like, then about 3 hours later, seatbelts back on for descent/landing.  Looking out of the window on the way out can be fun, especially as it's easy to make out the boot of Italy.  Coming back you fly over the alps (spectacular scenery).  The chances are that your ears will pop during the descent, they say sucking a sweet helps!

Don't worry about the flight at all, it really will be a fuss about nothing.

I would suggest however, having a few drinks in the departure lounge and also on board for medicinal purposes of course.

Trust me, it's well worth the flight.

Don't worry, the landing will be fine.  It's not half as bad as people make out and in my view no different from almost all other holiday destination airports.  Once the wheels touch down they just apply the brakes a bit that's all.  It really is nothing.

Hi,

I am an aerophobic person, I have been on that many planes now even though I dread it, I cope by taking Diazepam.  Thankfully I have a good Doctor, if you are really worried go and see him/her and they are very helpful.

Don't get like me and worry, it is the worst thing in the world and it ruins the days and the flight really.  Having said that I still fly, after all I couldn't go all over the world if I didn't, it is a means to an end.  I have already clocked up 72 hours this year so I am not doing too bad.

The other thing is have a drink but not too many or they won't let you on the plane because you are drunk and I think that would be worse.

Regards, Pegasus.

Hello magik

don't worry about your first time on a plane.  On my first flight i got myself so worked up i did'nt eat for a day before hand and i was crying so hard atthe airport i had to be pushed onto the plane! But, ITS EXCELLENT! I love flying and just think of the briiliant time you're going to have once your on holiday!

Even if you don't like it so much don't worry about it, your in safe hands and its just the means you have to take to have a fantastic holiday!

don't worry, be happy

The trip from the airport to Sidari can sometime be longer than one hour, depending on how many 'drop-offs' there are along the way.  I have been delivered to my accommodation within the hour but on other ocasions it has been nearly 3 hours.  Please don't let yourself worry about it though or let it spoil the start of your holiday, what will be, will be, and you are holiday, enjoy the passing scenery!

Tiddley xx

I doubt you will be the only one who is feeling nervous.  To be honest I think its a feeling that stays with you no matter how many times you fly.........I find looking after two excited children in the airport is enough to put your mind off things................so if you are flying from Luton on the late flight this friday you can borrow them if you like while I grab some late food!!!

I was really excited on my first flight. I don't think I was anxious at all because flying came to me quite late in life and it was one of those experiences that I'd always wanted to try. It helped that the Captain was really good on that occasion about giving updates and announcements. I confess I was a bit nervous about landing, but I was fine in the end. I still get a bit twitchy during turbulence but I've learned now that its practically inevitable so I don't fret so much.

The above posts are very good and its easy to say how safe flying is but i understand your concerns it is after all a strange enviroment and very strange sensations maybe i can explain some of the sounds you will hear and hopefully this will demystify the flight and hopefully give you something to think about during the flight so here goes.

On boarding the aircraft the engines may or may not be running most likely not the sound you can here is the generator suppling power for air conditioning and lights.

As you take your seat above your head you will see the fastern seat belt sign is lit.

as the final passengers have boarded then the first officer will start the engines one at a time as this takes a lot of power the lights may dim for a second or two, the cabin crew will then shut the doors and start the safety drill explaining where the exits are and how to put on your life jacket (all this information can be found on a laminated card in the pocket of the seatback infront of you.

The steps and baggage lorrys are then taken away from the aircraft.

The aircraft is then ready to be moved away from the terminal building this is achieved by a lorry that is connected to the front wheel of the aircraft and you will start to reverse when the aircraft is away from the building the lorry will be seperated and the plane is ready to taxi to the runway at this point the captain will ask the cabin crew to carry out cross check and report this means he want the crew to check the doors are secure and they will place a piece of tape across the door window this signifies the door is locked and secure they will report this to the captain the crew will then take their seats.

As the aircraft approaches the runway the interior lights will be turned out but you can turn on the reading light above your seat whilst the lights are out you will notice a lot of flashing lights these are the various strobe lights around the craft these are for visability in the air.

at the start of the runway the plane will come to a halt while the air trafic control give the pilot clearance to take off there may be a bit of a delay whilst a plane infront clears the runway.when the clearance is recieved the pilot will appliy full powerto the engines with the brakes full on when the corect power level is accieved he will release the brakes and the plane will quickly accelerate to about 180 mph the plane will quickly climb when the aircraft has reached about 5000 ft the engines will be cut back a bit and the climb will be relaxed a bit the climb will be much more gentle and the seat belt signs will go out.

the cabin crew will then start their duties ie preparing the meals drinks trollys ect.

This is the boring bit as nothing much happens for the next 2 hour 30 mins.

As the plane flys along the Adriatic coast of Italy the pilot will start the decent into Corfu you will notice the drop in engine noise and the fastern seat belt signs be lit and this is a good time to suck on a boiled sweet the swallowing action helps equalise the pressure in your ears. during the approach into Corfu there will be various gentle and sometimes tighter turns this will be accompanied the sound of the flaps on the wings being extended and lowered this can make the aircraft seem more clumbersome and you may here some wind noise the wheels will be lowered this can be heard in the cabin this also means you are only a few minutes from touch down there will most likely be one last right hand turn before touch down with one or two slight adjustments to the course .

You are probably thinking that the picture of the runway looks very short do not worry the aircraft will only use half the length.

if you look out of the window you will notice the ground getting closer this will prepare you for landing when the plane touches down there will be a bit of a jolt and the pilot will applie full brakes and reverse the engines this is quite normal and is nothing to worry about once the aircraft has slowed to about 30 miles an hour the crew will say those magic words WELCOME TO CORFU  the plane will then taxi to the terminal building and there may be a slight delay whilst the steps are bought out to the plane and the busses are driven into place the doors are then opened and you are then free to bisembark.

enjoy your holiday

Being in a plane is just like sitting on a coach, but a lot smoother. When you are in the air you think that the plane is not moving, but it is.

I remember being nervous about my first flight, but now I absolutely love it.  Although I have to say that Im always glad to get back on terra firma!

The thought of taking off makes my hair stand on end because I think its so exciting.  I love landing too, but the bit in the middle is soooo boring.  Its a pity you arent flying during the day, because its fab looking out of the window when you fly over Europe.

One thing that no-one has mentioned is the fact that when you return to the UK, if it is cloudy, you will experience a bit of a bumpy ride as the craft passes through that cloud.  This is nothing to worry about.

The best bits about the flight to Corfu?  The scenery as you approach, and that magic moment when the captain says "Cabin Crew - seats for landing!" Then you know you only have a few minutes before you arrive.  Fantastic!!

The posts about flights being boring....we didn't get chance this year. Monarch flight.
First they came round selling headsets, then it was nuts...chocolate etc....then they came round selling drinks....soon after that the meals came along....Right we thought, let's settle down....no such luck!!! Along came the duty free trolley and then to cap it all....finally 'Scratch Cards'
Lo and behold we had arrived at Corfu before we knew it.

I usually have a magazine and book with me....but rarely read much of them as I'm too busy looking around....

I'm sure you will enjoy your flight....and have a great holiday

Great Post Yanis - I could almost be there - must point out one or two extra things that might help you MagiK -

When the power is backed of the Aircraft may feel like it's dropping and this is one of the factors that most troubles some new flyers ( and even some experienced ones ) the aircraft itn't dropping - its just not climing anywhere near as quickly - so you get the immpresion of it loosing altitude - but its not I promise you .

Secondly try Not  to sit at the back of the plane - particularly if its a 757 of 767 -( you can ask the check in desk )  as you won't like the slight feeling of the plane "flexing"  they do - as they as so big - it's quite normal - but if you are very sensitive you feel it far more at the very back. for this reason its also better if you dont have a view of the wings - as they really do twitch around quite a bit.

Check in early and ask for a seat nearer to the front, If you are the nerous type you will feel a lot better. !!

When you eventually disembark to you feel fantastic  !!

Have a great flight !!!   You will love it !!!

SIMON
