I have just booked my first ever visit to Corfu (Roda), I am truly terrified of snakes, am I likely to come across any either in the wild or from people touting them for photos etc in the street? I need to know where to avoid!

Hi shaz,

Snakes on Corfu. Yes there are a few species, but as most snakes, will avoid the human race rather than you avoid them.

No snakes are used in any sort of performances. Well certainly none that I know of. Snakes can be found in the open spaces such as Olive Groves, and land space, and in some gardens, but will normally scurry away when approached.

As in this country, if you see one, give it a wide berth, and leave well alone. But it is unlikely that you will. Do not think about them, and enjoy your holiday in Roda.

Yammas, Chris.

...Hi Ya Welcome to the Corfu travel Guide....I doubt it if you will come across any snakes at all..Only dead ones on the road...Place's to avoid would be as the same in England......The snake that they have in Corfu is about the same as in England the adder....I have travailed to Meany Greek islands and snakes that i have seen are very far and few between....Dont you worry and enjoy corfu...chris

They are mostly seen in April and May which is the breeding season. They are usually in the long grass in the olive groves and are difficult to see. If you make a noise as you walk through the olives you will never see one as they move away so quickly. I always look for the tortoises when out walking so try to be quiet so have seen a couple of snakes but if you make a noise they panic and disappear. Remember there are snakes in all European countries including England but how often do you see them in a town or village?

Hi shazproud,

As everyone has said, you're very unlikely to come across a snake - I've only seen one in ten years of visiting Corfu and it was tiny, so you'll be fine

Hi shazproud,

Welcome to the Corfu Travel Guide.

I have a real phobia when it comes to snakes,to the point, that i break out in sweats, shake and have nightmares. I have only ever seen one snake whilst on holiday in Corfu, and i'm afraid to say, that it was not alive.

You will be fine. Just go out there, and have a really great holiday, and put it to the back of your mind.

I've only ever seen dead snakes!  I've seen a few tortoises though which are very sweet.  (And last year a mouse!)

We have been to Corfu umpteen times.  My husband saw a dead one on the road once and I wouldn't believe him for ages!!  Thought he was telling fibs as I didn't think you got snakes on Corfu until one of the locals said you did.  Never seen a live one though!!

Many many thanks to all who have replied to my question regarding snakes, I really appreciate the advice and warm friendly comments received. I love tortoises and shall look forward to seeing those, I am also a big fan of lizards, in fact I have a ghekko tattoo on my foot! Its just snakes I am phobic about! I cant wait to visit Roda and have found the website so useful. Now where is the best place for a family of veggies to eat out?

Thanks all

Shaz xx

we have been to Corfu on 8 occasions now over the last 4 years and so far have come across 4 snakes, 2 well and truly run over by cars, one was on a side road while we were house hunting  and was right in the midle of the road which made giving it a wide berth a bit tricky. The 4th one we came across was last year in sidari about 8am one sunday morning.....there is a patch of grass just before the Alkion hotel heading into sidari, as we passed i looked down at the road to see a 6" one about 3 inches from where i had put my foot down... needless to say i moved to one side very swiftly lol.... we watched as it slid off into the grass, a guy called Matt Wilson who is a member of the CTG has put photos in the gallery of those found on Corfu..he is an avid snake photographer.

We are sure like many people you probably wont see any snakes and those on holiday that do are a rare occurance.

Dave.

Hello Shazproud

As a fellow phobic may I re-iterate please do not worry about this.  You would have to be very unlucky to see one and if you did it would probably be dead.  In 4 visits to Corfu we've seen 2 dead ones and 1 live one (luckily for me we were safely confined in a minibus at the time) and it doesn't stop me going back, even though, as you may have noticed, I don't even use the word if I can avoid it.

I have a terrible fear of snakes, so much so that I can't even look at a picture of one or when one comes on the tv I run out of the room, so that I can't see OR hear it. :|

This will be my 13th year going to Roda & I've yet to come across one, thankfully.  And I hope it stays that way.

Hope you enjoy your trip to Roda.  I'm sure you'll love it. :)

Jackie :)

PS.  What date do you arrive in Roda?

Hi Shaz,

Eat anywhere you like in Corfu-you will find plenty to suit your diet. We're vegetarians and we've been going for 7 years now and I'm sure you know too well that vegetarians do not return to places where they can't find much to eat that's good and varied!!

If you're ever unsure about a menu though, just ask

There are plenty of snakes on Corfu, but only 1 is venomous, and he is more dangerous than our adder(northern viper),but as others have said, they want your company less than you want theirs! They will only be somewhere quiet, near water, not where there is a lot of disturbance, and will mostly be out at night. If You do walk in the olive groves,or across fields, carry a stick, tap it on the ground as You walk along, that will give them enough warning! The more lizards You see,the more likely there are to be snakes nearby, they love lizards! You probably wont see any,I usually see some, but thats cos I look for them, bobbo

Yeah, me too.  All my friends & family think I'm really strange.  But I just can't help it.

I remember when I was still at school, I was sitting in the living room one evening, eating my dinner & The Really Wild Show was on tv and of course, a snake came on screen.  I threw my dinner up in the air, in fear, and ran out of the room.

My mum spent the next 5 mins cleaning pie, beans & mashed potato out of her carpet. lol

Not strange at all Jackie,

I think my fear came from when i was a kid. A friend of mine had a python as a pet,and it never bothered me at all. I used to sit there and watch it all the time. Then one day,he thought he would be funny. He took it out of the tank, and chased me up our street with it. It's mouth wide open. Ever since then,i have had this real bad phobia of snakes.

I went to the pictures Thursday night to watch The worlds fastest Indian. Well, one of my mates must have wondered what was going on. On came a snake. I nearly fell off the chair!!   My other mate had to let me know when i could look at the screen again, and my popcorn ended up all over the floor.

I saw a couple of little live snakes in Roda last June, one had made it up two flights of stairs and gave us a shock sitting outside our apartment one dark night, mainly because my daughter spotted it and screamed snake! Our greek friend came running out of the neighbours to see. It soon dissapeared. Was really small though. Saw a couple that I think were dead too.

OMG... I never thought of snakes in Corfu. I think I'd pass out if I saw one. When I was in Kavos years ago I never came across any, never even entered my head. Here in Northern Ireland we don't have any type of snakes.

I really will pass out if I saw one. I'm getting worried now, incase the kid stray into grass or something. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a really poisonous one and an OK one!

I never knew that:

Why Ireland Has No Snakes

"Legend has it that St. Patrick drove all the snakes from Ireland. Sometime back in the fifth century he stood on a hill, the story goes, and used a staff to herd the slithering creatures into the sea, banishing them for eternity. It's true, aside from zoos and pets, there are no snakes on the emerald isle. In fact, there never were any snakes in Ireland. This state of affairs probably has more to do with the vagaries of geography than any neat tricks performed by St. Patty."

And I think St. George was either from Turkey or Palestine?

Anyway, belfastbabe just to reassure you, you and your family should be absolutely fine - I have only ever seen one teeny, tiny snake in 10 years, and that was up a tree at a distance. I'm sure if the kids stray into any grassy areas, the noise of them and their footsteps will give the snakes fair warning and they'll be off

Hope you'll all have a fantastic time in Corfu
