Hello, while I have been to various parts of Greece before, I am considering spending a week in june 06 in self catering, but have had some reports that Sidari is the new Faleraki, is this true?

Whilst it is true that Sidari does now attract club 18-30 types, it didn't appear to be too mad when we drove through there last year, but maybe we caught it on a quiet night or too early in the evening.
But if Sidari has gone too far in this direction, there are plenty of quieter resorts close by where you could base yourself, whilst being able to visit Sidari should you want to.
Acharavi & Roda for example are only a short distance but far more relaxed.

having spent the summer there this season i have to totally disagree. Its nothing like a club 18-30 thing, yeah there are a fair few young ones out there having a good time. But where are you going to go where that deson't happen.
It was a relativly quiet season there was some serous trouble and my thoughts are with her family. its nothing like faliraki. Could it be that younger lads and lasses might share there experiences than others...or that your reading to much into it. Seriously if its club 18-30 go to kavos. Sidari is suitable for all ages and most hotel are situated away from the main strip so you get vertually no noice.
If you read other posts you wil see large families going out. large groups of teenagers. large groups of older people etc. Not just groups of males.
couldn't really find the exact words i was looking for. but think about it, you make YOUR holiday not the people who happen to be there at the same time.

I agree with Claire. Having stayed in Sidari and the surrounding area 7 or 8 times in the last three years I have never witnessed any of the behaviour which is prevalent in the UK towns and cities. We do prefer Acharavi because as Acharavi.com says, it is more laid back and perhaps less orientated to the family market but Sidari is fine.

We were in sidari last year and although it was busy at night there wasnt much drunking people littering the streets just people having a good time and getting on with each other.

the only time you'll see drunk people wondering about could be between 4-7 when the bars shut and when the clubs shut. the police patrol reguarly to check for drunken people etc.

Dont want to put too much of a dampner on this but, was talking to some friends at new year and happen to mention we were going to corfu as always, they told us they booked Sidari last year with two teenage daughters and had a very bad impression of corfu from it!! Felt they could not give their daughters the freedom to go out as they do in spain!! they said a lot more sadly that I wont post.
Each to their own, depends what you are looking for

On a drunken t**ser score rating, Kavos is much more like Faliraki than Sidari is. There are drunks about but before club kicking out time they tend to stay in 'friendly but a little annoying' mode (a bit of Greek magic soaked into them perhaps) After club kicking out time as Claire says they are more of a problem, my friends first taste of Sidari, arriving by coach in early morning, was of coach having to negotiate people laid in road and sides of coach being thumped by a drunken gang of yobbites - small stuff but you don't really need the Brit yob attitude showing itself before you even get off the coach.

Going by the news this morning, and a recent survey carried out, it appears that it is official that the UK is the heaviest drinking state of Europe with a vast increase in Cirrosis of the Liver.
So where ever you go, it seems that it will be much better than at home. At least, although sometimes annoying, drinking abroad is more of a fun thing, and part and parcel of a holiday for those who do drink. I do not think we can say the same for back home going on recent news and documentaries.

Sorry to go off subject everybody ..
Chris I heard that report as well and They are putting it down to the 24 hour drinking law in this country which has only just become law and has only been with us a couple of weeks.. please correct me if I'm wrong but don't Cirrhosis of the liver take some time to develop or can one get it after a night out on the beer....

Hi Bruce,
Not being from the Medical fraternity, I cannot answer your question, but it is highly unlikely.
However, the report and its figures were based on the last few years, ie, for instance, Scotland had seen arise in Cirrosis of the liver in men by 10% from 2004 to 2005. The amount of females with a drink problem had doubled over the same period of time.
Personally, I do not think it is the bringing in of 24 hour drinking, although this will add to the problem. Drinking heavily, or binge drinking as been around for a long time. Certainly in my home town it has risen a great deal. In Bournemouth some 76 applied for 24 hour drinking and although a high number got extra hours, only about 4 got the full licence.
I think you will find it is down to having more money, particular in the younger scenario to splash out on booze, and lots of nights out. I have been to town on a night out and it is shocking to see the amount of youngsters out on the streets, out of their minds. I have friends and relatives in the Police, and they say their whole time virtually is taken up with drink related matters, obviously moreso at the weekends.
Yammas, Chris.

I think people in the UK are depressed, whether they realize it or not, and they drink because they know in the short term it will lighten their lives. Depressed people do not take a long term view. What this depression stems from I don't know exactly, I think many people may feel their lives here in the UK are bleak and stressful. Which is why so many people are leaving the country.
Sorry I am keeping this off topic!

Perhaps Charles Kennedy should stay on with Lib Dems and maybe even in future become PM - with a greater percentage of young people being co-erced by advertising, linked to peer pressure, less tightly nit families/communities and as Julia says above, boring/stressful lives then at least Mr Kennedy has direct experience of the drink side if not the 'ignoring our young people' side. Having said, on that basis maybe I should become PM, but I enjoy my drink problem and that kind of work might get in the way of it....
It might be quite fun having an alchoholic PM and as I heard someone on TV say today - let him keep drinking, after all look what Tony Blair and Mr Bush have done for us without excessive drinking.

Was in Sidari at end of season 2005 - found a lovely mix - something for everyone. Beautiful beaches, lovely pool at the Sunny Corfu Apartments - (where we stayed), plenty of daytime activities in the town, the usual kareoke etc in the evenings. (can be very entertaining taken in the right spirit & providing you don't drink so much that you find yourself participating!)
Think the twenty something son expected more clubbing but was hampered somewhat by the fifty something parents! Plus he found the house hunting a bit of a bore!
Would highly recommend Sidari for all ages!

Sidari is nothing like them!! Although it has changed over the past 10 years also,it is generally a fantastic place for people of all ages to go. The bars have people ageing from 18-80,all drinking dancing and enjoying themselves together. It is known for its lazy days & crazy night but thats not just the young ones that take advantage of the nigthtime drinking!!

My son has been to Sidari twice now and enjoyed it for the fact it was nothing like Faliraki. Easy to get into the relaxed Greek way. That cirrhosis report just shows you can do anything with figures. The high rate applies to Scotland. In England 14 per 100,000 suffer from it. To put that in context 35 in Portugal and 34 in Germany by comparison. They could have put we are way down the list in England but the agenda seems to be to stop us having the same freedoms to go out as the rest of Europe. As for biggest drinkers, we are actually 7th for per capita consumption in Europe. The first is Luxembourg who consume 40% more per head than us. Yet no one says they are a nation of boozers. Suppose it keeps some people in work coming out with strategies to combat problems which it is in their interest to exaggerate.

been to falaraki twice in last 2 years, we stay in a nice hotel on the outskirts.
last time took my 18 year old son and his girlfriend, who were keen to go into falaraki town!!
bit of a disapointment to be honest, one main street and yes!! a lot of young brit yobs trying to look tough and barely able to stand upright. we didnt go back into town.
Havent been to sidari for 4 or 5 years but no comparison to falaraki ( the rest of rhodes was fabulous).
why do we let people like the brit yobs go abroad and portray our nation in such a way ?? its about time passports were being refused.
and yes they are one of the main reasons for some brits are looking to move abroad to have a quieter more civilised life.

Never been to Faliraki so can't comment....however, had the misfortune of having to travel through Malia at about 4am on the way to Elounda one year. It was horrendous. The coach had to negotiate crowds of drunks who were banging on the coach and laying in the road vomiting and totally out of their heads. One poor middle-aged couple who had booked allocation on arrival were absolutely horrified to find this is where they were staying!
I sincerely hope that nowhere on Corfu ever gets to this stage!

Hi You know I never seem to have any trouble with the youngsters when I'm on holiday..there have been times when they are acting silly around me but always behave when ask to.. but so do I act silly when I've had a few and I'm 65..as long as the young people who have had a few don't harm me or mine... then everything is OK and we all get on great..
you see I was a youngster once believe it or not ...and before anybody says "you've got a good memory Bruce"..I have

Well, foreveraber, I am a Hull City supporter too, small world, severe problems with the liver occur after @@@@ 10 years of heavy drinking, or sooner if you start drinking in your early teens, of which seems to be the norm nowadays. The holiday in Sidari, of which we are looking forward to seems to be getting better reviews ., do all you other members recommend hiring a car, or do I we use the public transport.

Well Mick the Greek, loath as I am to argue with another member of the Tiger Nation, I and my mates must have been lucky. 30+ years of exceeding the guidelines on a daily basis (due mainly to the funny hours and jobs I was in) and not one of us now in our mid fifties with any liver problems. Funny enough now pubs have extended hours, something we have spent most of our lives wanting to be like everywhere else in Europe, we hardly go out. Strangely, in Corfu same as Spain, France, Germany or Holland, I used to drink less when you could more or less drink until when you wanted than I did at home when shutting times were 11o' clock. Talking to people including my son and his mates it seems a fair few are the same. Probably because you don't feel you have to knock it back as you know that at a certain time that's your lot.
(Looks like a couple of new signings in this week then onwards and upwards).

I thinky you will be ok in Sidari, it is a busy resort but mostly family orientated. I only visited once, we drove from Kalami as far as Sidari and although it wasn't my scene (sorry I'm a Kalami fan, nowhere else will do! lol) it would be good for families because there is plenty to do for the children. I'd say you get a few groups of young people going there too but they shouldn't bother you as people have already said, they will be out in the streets drunk in the middle of the night when you lot are probably tucked up in bed after enjoying a night on the Ouzo at the local bars, if thats what you do of course! lol
Interestingly though when we were in Kalami last June we met a lot of couples who visited Sidari for a day/night trip and said it was very quiet and that it was very strange for it to be so quiet....Maybe it was the time of year - too early in season.
I'm sure you will have a lovely holiday in Sidari and the kids will love it.
Have a great holiday!

Sidari is perfect for kids as there are plenty of other kids all over the place for them to play with. Lots of the bars and restaurants are on the beach so an ideal playground and paradise for most kids. The kids are fussed over everywhere they go. Mine has an even better time than me.

The Canal area is a quiet area of Sidari. There are lots of reataurants and a few bars and pool bars. I find that people head away from the Canal area towards the main road in the evenings and the bars around the Canal da'mour close or the noise stops from the louder bars at around midnight to 1am. Can't say I have ever heard anyone complaining about noise apart from if they have noisy people in their apartments. The only really loud part of Sidari is part of the main strip and even that is only really busy at the height of the holiday season.

It is a shame that Falaraki gets such bad views as they have try hard to sort the problems out ,we stayed on the outskirts and some younger people staying in our apartments would go to falarika and came back said no problems at all .We went during day so could not comment ,but its annoying as Rhodes is a lovley island and when people find out you going there their first thoughts are Falaraki which I think people should just find out for them selves and not put dampers on it .I 've not been to Sidari yet so can,t compare but we'll make it good [i hope]

I agree with Kara.b. The Canal is the quieter side of Sidari. There are plenty of places to eat and only a few bars. Sidari overall isn't too noisey. The rowdiest I have every seen it was when Greece won Euro 2004 and they partied all night
