I am after some info for my Daughter who is hoping to go to Corfu in August with her daughter. They want beach but not nightclubs, they also do not want a long transfer from the Airport. I know this is a lot to ask but knowing how these forums work I am sure someone can come up with some ideas. It is some time since we ourselves visited Corfu. We stayed in Kassiopi then and loved it. I know there is/or was no beach as such but just seem to remember the hour long transfer. Has this changed?
Many thanks
Marion

Hi, you could always try Messongi or Moraitika. The beaches are very safe for children, there is a night club in Moraitika, but it's not very big ad is set well away from the hotels, apartments etc. Have a look in the resort guide of this site.
The tranfer is about an hour, but as with a trip to any part of the island, forget about the coach and tell them to treat themselves to a taxi. It may be a bit more costly, but it's straight there, no waiting at the airport for everyone else to collect their luggage, no coach swerving around the bends, no stops at just about every hotel and they'll be there in less than half the time
All the best
Sue

How about Gouvia or Kontokali? Neighbouring resorts both reasonably close to the airport and within walking distance of each other I believe. Between the two they offer a bit of everything!
Our forum director Sailor is more familiar with these resorts and I am sure he will offer more advice if needed.
If the North coast is calling that little bit more but the transfer time is putting them off, maybe a taxi transfer is the answer, this cuts down travelling time considerably as you go directly to your resort (hopefully!)
Hope this helps a little
Dean

I had the same worries about transfer times before my first trip to Corfu as I have only started going there since I had my first daughter and for the first couple of years of her life I took her to Mallorca because of the quick flight and transfer times.
I am very glad that I decided to go to Corfu as I have now had wonderful holidays in four different resorts all and I now really love the coach trip from the airport and consider it a sight seeing part of the holiday especially if you stay in the North and go over that mountain.
My advice would be book whichever resort you fancy and do not worry about the transfer. The journey is well and truly worth it.

Thanks for your speedy replies. I will pass them on to my Daughter. Did not put that my Grandaughter is or will be 13 when they go. Must admit our very first visit was back in ???? must have been about 1988 ish. We stayed at The Maltezos in Gouvia, then moved on to Kassiopi the following two years.

Many thanks Dean.
Hi Marion.
Firstly welcome to the Corfu Travel Guide. Adding to Dean's comments above, I would also recommend Kontokali as a perfect example of what your are looking for, for your daughter and grandaugher. Kontokali is situated on the east coast, approximately 8km from the airport, 20 to 30 minutes transfer time. Family run hotels I would recommend, is the Spifti Prifti and the Zefiros. Kontokali as a wonderful beach, with shallow water out to a fair distance. The beach is part of the Kontokali Beach Hotel, but is open to other holidaymakers from other hotels. You can use the facilities at the hotel, and the beach also offers a small cafeteria run by a lovely lady originally from Nottingham.
Gouvia, the next resort along, is more livelier, but has a family orientation about it. Suitable for all ages, with many restaurants, tavernas, and shops etc. It is in walking distance from Kontokali on a very flat coastal road, which would take about 20 - 30 minutes to walk. There are a few resting establishments on the way if needed.
Between the two resorts is Gouvia Marina and Beach. This beach is made up of shingle and pebbles, unlike Kontokali Beach which is sand. However, Gouvia beach is just as lovely with its settings inside a coved area.
You also have the Lagoon, which is a large pool complex set in gardens. This is attached to another hotel, but again can be used by other visitors.
There is a very good bus service to and from Corfu Town, if one fancies a good day out shopping and for meals. It is a No7 bus (Blue), costing about 1 Euro each way. The bus stops are situated on the main road to Corfu Town.
If there is anything else you wish to know, do please let me know.
Yammas, Chris

One year when we hired a car we went to a resort called Glyfada. The beach was very sandy and the resort quite small, I do not know any more of the resort but I'm sure somebody on here will. Our favourite is San Stefanos NW but with up to 2 hour transfer time is probably not you choice. How are you planning to travel as most tour operators offer a taxi transfer?
Regards.
Tony.

Glyfada has a lovely beach and the resort is very small with just a couple of hotels, an apartment complex and supermarket. There are some places to eat along the beach front and Pelekas is just about walkable (up the hill) for a change of scene.
Another option is Dassia. Lovely beach, good hotels, and great for families.
Hope they have a good time wherever they go,
Julia

Agios Gordios is a lovely resort on the West of the island and only 30 minutes (max) from the airport. The beach is lovely and gained a Blue Flag this summer. It's a family orientated resort without night clubs or loud music. The people are all very friendly and there are lots of great places to eat and stay.
I would recommend Roda - it is about an hour on the coach to transfer, or 35 euros gets you a taxi which takes 35 minutes. It is a lovely place - the beach is a lot better than it used to be, and is sand (although not soft paradise 'yellow' sand!!) It has 2 bars which stay open most of the night The Drunken Sailor and Mistral - one is like a night club one is a kareoke type bar. The village itself is very friendly - most everyone knows or is related to everyone else which i believe gives it the atmosphere it has. Neither of the 2 establishments above play music into the street after midnight so noise pollution is not as issue.
Neighbouring town Sidari is good if you want to go to it it is where is very lively - I am told that next year club 18 - 30 are moving here so that is one to avoid for your daughter if it is not her kind of holiday. Likewise steer clear of Kavos if they are not after that.
I also highly recommend Acharavi, it is much more Greek and a fairly short transfer time. It still gets fairly busy with tourists in the summer - but it only has 1 nightclub which from the street and unless you knew it was there you would not notice it. Acharavi has many more Greek tavernas than anywhere else I have visited in Corfu - the beach is also larger than that in Roda. It has many lovely shops also selling traditional Greek souvinirs, and a bakery, greengrocer etc.
Hope this helps a little!
Lucy

Roda, an old fishing village is ideally suited to families and it does have a nice sandy beach. Acharavi is also well suited for families, however mpost of the beaches are of a shingle/sand type. Both are between 1 - 1½ hours tranfer time by coach depending on route taken. A taxi, if hailed from the airport on arrival will cost approx 45 euro, however many apartment owners have deals with taxi owners and if booked in advance the charge is approx 38 euro

Hi
If you want a nice quiet resort with a great beach have a look at my photos of Agios Georgios north. Set in beautiful scenery this resort has only 5 hotels (2 are Thomsons) numerous small private apartments and a good choice of tavernas and restaurants. Children of that age would love it but older teenagers prefer places with more nightlife. There is very little traffic and no fast main road to worry about.
Like most of the other resorts already mentioned you are looking at a transfer time of 45-90 minutes, depending on whether by taxi or coach and the time of day, but it is not a boring ride even for regular visitors.
Both Theo's Hotel and Costas Golden Beach have excellent reputations. For the beach Costas GB is ideal as it is actually there at the beach. Theo's has a very friendly atmosphere and has many "returnees". It is a 10-min walk from the beach and has a beautiful pool-with-a-view. I can also recommend a few apartments.

Thanks again for all your replies. My Daughter is coming over tomorrow so I will show her these replies. We have then to decide what is going to be best for them, a package or flight only and arrange the accommodation for themselves.

Yes apparantly so, I was told by Thomas when I was there this year that it has been on the cards for a couple of years. I really hope Roda does not become like an overflow for 18-30 holidaymakers though! Even though I am only 24 I love the nice atmosphere their I dont want it ruined!!

According to the Club 18-30 website, the only resort offered on Corfu is still Kavos, although this could still change but hopefully not, Sidari is well known as a family resort and long may it stay that way!

Fortunately 18-30 has already been there and done that with Kassiopi (back in the 80's?). It didn't really work out and they went on to concentrate their efforts on Kavos. Not likely they would ever go back

we go to Arillas for the first time next June and the beach looks great for children. We have horrible flight times, but we like travelling at night, you dont waste the days travelling, and have heard the transfer time can be anything from 1.30-4hrs which we dont want at 5.00 a.m. so we have decided to book a taxi and arrive in less than an hour hopefully. This Sept. we stayed in Agia Gordios and transfer time was no longer than 40 mins and it was lovely to take in the views from high up in the coach and most kids like a ride on a bus anyway as its all part of the holiday. This resort was like going back in time and we loved it! Hope Arillas is similar. Hope you find something from the replies here, you are spoilt for choice as there are so many lovely places to visit..

Plus............. What will all the bars do if they all move to Sidari - In Kavos I mean, their must be hundreds, luckily I have not had the pleasure of going but I imagine it wiyld be a ghost town without its main trade!
Hopefully all it is just a rumour.....sorry to have taken over the thread.
(KAZNO if you are online any time soon and see this - the other thing Tomo told me is that on the road opposite Spiros where the horse riding was this year they are building a big all inclusive hotel :-(
