Does anyone have the correct information on registering a birth of dual nationality. I am travelling to the UK in a few days to continue my pregnancy and the little one will be born in the UK. He or she will be half English, half Greek and although the birth will be registered on a British birth certificate I also want to register in Greece too. Ive had mixed responses. the British Consulate dont seem to be able to give much information and the Greek consulate say that either we have to go to them in London or go to Athens on our return home and I really do not want to do so much travelling around with a newborn. Also will my child have to have a Greek or British passport?

Thanks so much all of you! We are so happy and its been a wonderful year for us, so much has happened! The first season of business has been good despite the worries of dwindling tourism although I shall be spending all my time with the baby next year so that people dont have to wait to be served while I finish the feed(if you know what i mean!)  So happy about next week and truly delerious about becoming parents! We have everything that we have ever wished for and look forward to seeing you all next year! I will contact you upon arrival in the UK. Take care. xx

Bruce, Thankyou for being such a gentleman, until I looked at the gallery pictures I really didnt realise that I think we have met before , I have worked in Kassiopi in the past and believe we met in Kostas bar, i used to go every night, 2000 I think. Let me know when you go next year and I will try to visit you with "mini- me"!

Hi

I can't help very much but found this:

"Children born to a Greek father or after 08/05/1984 to a Greek mother, are automatically Greek citizens although they may also be British citizens.

The Greek authorities require children who are dual British/Greek Nationals to travel in and out of Greece on a Greek passport."

So, I wonder if it is necessary to actually register an overseas birth in Greece (or at the embassy) to obtain dual nationality?  Or whether the above just relates to children born in Greece?

Hope someone can help you, there are members who have mixed nationality children perhaps one of them will see this.

Good luck with it all,

Julia

Thanks Julia, The problem we are facing is also that Nikos may not be in the UK to register the birth with me and the Greek Embassy issues Greek passports but to do this I must register there too and they have made it clear that both parents must be present at registration of birth. It is so confusing and all I want to do is concentrate on the pregnancy without the worry of the possible delay that we may have returning home. For many reasons we cannot consider a birth in Corfu , it would be a solution to the situation but is simply not an option.  Thankyou for your help.

It does sound rather complicated.  Such a shame you can't have the baby on Corfu, it would probably be far simpler the other way round!

Have your tried phoning the British Embassy in Athens?

Julia

hi Michelaki,

by having the baby in the UK you might be saving yourself (and grown-up baby) a lot of trouble later on in life.  Children born abroad  do not have the  right to pass on their British nationality to their children, if they are born abroad.   Amazingly, immigrants from anywhere in the world, whose children are born in theUK, get British citzenship as a matter of course.

Good luck with the baby.  It is a lovely time of life. (Greek/British children tend to be very handsome and kind-maybe I'm just biased!)

Hi Michelaki

Spoke to someone who was in a similiar situation. The best thing is to register at the consulate in London. On your return you can then also register here.

Sorry I can't help more.

Hi there, hope this helps a bit. My husband is Greek and at the time of the birth of my little boy (now 6 yrs old) we were living in Corfu but i too travelled back to the UK for the birth.  We registered his birth in the UK as normal and when we returned to Corfu also registered it there too.  From what I can remember we did it at the local municipality office which in our case was Argirades.  My husband did all the paperwork and I think Ii had to just sign one or two documents.  We certainly did not have to go to Athens.  We had to get the birth certificate and our marriage certificate translated and it was quite a simple process.  He has a UK passport but is also allowed to have a Greek one if need be and as far as I am aware with us now living in the UK all the time he will not have to do national service in the Greek army, however if we ever return to live in Greece he will have to. Good luck with it all!
