I have recently encountered what I consider something of a con with Nova satellite TV. I will explain
We have been Nova subscribers for many years. We don't tend to use the TV much during the summer but with the start of the Premiership, we decided to check all was well. It wasn't!
A quick call to Nova provided the answer, or so I thought. They have sent out updated cards. Needless to say, having to rely upon Karousades post office and our local postman meant that it had not been delivered.
It was suggested that I go to the ONLY person who could supply us with a replacement card.
This we did and the card was supplied F.O.C.. Then the first inkling of a problem emerged.
When I pointed out that we do not use a Nova decoder but a Humax decoder with the relevant CAM to receive Nova, he sucked his teeth and informed us that it would probably not work. We were flabbergasted as we have never experienced any problem before.
Undeterred we called in at another satellite installer, a personal friend. He confirmed the Nova agent's story.
We returned home and tried the card. IT WORKED... sort of! We kept losing the signal and so I phoned Nova again. We had no luck.
I telephoned another installer who also confirmed that he did not expect the new card to work.
I ended up phoning Nova a total of three times but could not get them to admit that the new card will not work in anything but a Nova decoder. (It does, incidentally, work in a Nova box!)
My issue is that we receive signals from a total of four satellites and so, adding another box is not much of an option.
Talk about 'moving the goalposts' and then having the audacity to deny it!
Has anybody else on the forum experienced this problem when using a non-Nova decoder with CAM?
Nova are in danger of losing our 60 quid a month for their 'full' package!
All the best,
Bob G.

Hi Bob,
I tried reconnecting my Nova last Winter for the football to be told I had to buy a new box and card for 200 euros!!! I ended up buying the Nova In A Box package for 100 euros which included 2 months sports package and a new box and card. I have yet to re-connect this year but it gives me an excuse to go to the pub to watch it and Mel to not hear me moaning about Anelka and Kalou!!!

Used Nova for 4 years and have had no problems whatsoever. We find them one of the most efficient companies in Greece!!! (not that there's much competition) Neither have friends who live in Greece for 9 months of the year, they always cancel Nova for 3 months and then get it back immediately when they return. Sid Ari, can you answer a question I've had many different queries over: I always thought Sky was illegal anywhere but in UK. Do let me know if I am wrong, but do not compromise yourself!!!

Also the card updates your entitlement to view via the
Satellite
Hmm! I understand this, but why, oh why will they not admit that this is what they have done? As I see it, they have unilaterally changed the terms and conditions of use.
They may be worried about piracy, but whatever they do will not stop the practice of card-sharing which I predict will become more prevalent. (If anyone doesn't understand how that works Google it!) I am pretty sure that the technology does not exist to prevent this practice.
Nova is not our only option for television entertainment, and I am afraid that I am running out of space for associated appliances!
It would not be so bad if they were to admit what they have done but abject denial is a fraud in my book. I want Greek TV. In our area, terrestrial TV is not much of an option otherwise I would use it.
I am surprised that there are not others on this forum who are using non Nova equipment. It is not illegal.
Ho hum! (Says he with a sigh!) I think I'll go out for a good meal tonight to forget ... until tomorrow.
Thanks to all who have responded so far. I can see us parting company with Nova. What a bunch of Charlatans!

We have used Nova for the last four years we have lived here. I cannot complain about the service [other than a few 'blips' when we have a serious electrical storm] and even then the helpdesk has talked us through resetting etc.
When our new card arrived by post the helpdesk talked us through the implementation.
I have never been the sort to try to short circuit a commodity by using different gadgets to gain more efficiency, if you want extras then pay for them is what I say, within reason, and I firmly believe that Nova give great value for money, although we only use them during the winter to full capacity but don't stop our summer payments.
I certainly don't want sky anywhere near our place ...after four + years away from the UK I don't need Corrie or Eastenders ...lol...nor sky news for that matter ...

Hi John & Hilary,
Hmmm! Not sure that using one decoder to hit four different satellites is short circuiting a commodity.
We've been Nova customers for even longer than yourself and up until now have had reasonable service. However, by denying that they are forcing their clients to use only their decoders is tantamount to lying to me. If there is one thing I hate (more than thieves!) it is being lied to.
It is not that we can't afford to buy extra unnecessary (?) equipment or that we couldn't find space (at a push) to squeeze in yet a bit more electronics. My complaint is that these changes have been implemented without warning and then, when confronted with what they have done, they deny it!
I must confess to being seriously hacked off by their cavalier attitude but will wait a day or so before deciding whether to ditch them. There is after all, plenty of other rubbish to watch during winter!
