One point though you may want to clarify and expand on ...........If a boat has been brought in from the UK with all VAT paid and has SSR registry ..............Why the need to re-register it and pay taxes ?

There is no need to re/register or pay any taxes if the above applies, simply take the boat out of water after six months, and you are ok;

An ICC is what you need for qver 30hp, International certificate of compatance.

So does anyone have any thought on how much would a 16 ft (ish) open motor boat with a bimini and 4 stroke outboard (less than 30ph) and trailer would cost?

Hi

If a boat is VAT paid in the Uk (and you can prove it!) no VAt will be due if you transfer it to Greece. If it's on the SSR registry, it can stay there and you will not need an ICC, because one is not needed in the UK. However, if the boatis re-registered in Greece, you will have to pay the appropriate fees (which may be a tax by any other name, but not VAT) and you will require an ICC - subject, of course, to the 30hp limit.

Hi Guys

From a UK VAT/Duty consultant (thanks John and Hilary) whatever you do, make sure that you have the correct documentation on your boat.

I sailed to France at the begining of last week with a group of friends. Unfortunately, due to an admin oversight, our skipper and owner of the boat managed to leave the SSR certificate at home. This gave the French Customs the opportunity to divert us from our intended destination (St Vaaast) to Cherbourg, where they conducted a thorough search of the yacht. We were intercepted at 15.30 hrs on Monday about 8 miles from St Vaast and diverted to Cherbourg, arriving (bearing in mind we were sailing against both wind and tide) at about 22.00hrs. We were finally released at 01.30 on Tuesday without apology, fine or charge - they were looking for drugs.

Although it would appear that the Douanes exceeded their legal authority, the fact that one element of our ducumentation was missing certainly contributed to our dificulties - be warned!

The upside to all of this was that, having been released fro detention at 01.30, we had a quick meal - deciding to leave at 04.00. As we were so tired we refused to move to the marina and stayed tied up to the Customs Cutter. However, we made as much noise as possible when we left - including all of the appropriate sound signals with the ship's horn ( for those who don't know, 3 blasts for reverse, 1 blast for altering course to Port and 2 for altering course to Starboard) - all at 04.00 and no more than 20 feet from their boat! Sadly, we woke the Customs guys up, as they we sleeping on their boat.
