Whoop Whoop!!
Not too early at all rocdoc! I go to Paxos 7th June and the suitcase is down staring me in the face from a corner of the bedroom, itching to be packed!

Rocdoc, you won't need a map - there is one circular main road round the island. If you miss a turning either turn round and go back the way you came, or keep going and you will eventually get there again!!!LOL!
Seriously, loved the island although a week was enough for us because it was so small. Aberdeen Studios are OK and Thassos Town is fantastic! Don't forget Panagia up in the mountains - wonderful place with the freshest, purest water, running from natural springs, I have ever tasted!

Glad I'm not alone in that Helen. We are renovating at the moment and one of the wardrobes had to be emptied, found myself sorting my holiday shirts, checking mozzie spray, making sure we have enough anti-histamines to see us through, in fact started taking them today to minimise the effects of the dreaded killer mozzies. Am assuming they will be active in Thassos too. Have you cracked the art of packing for two in one suitcase yet? I'm blowed if I have. Every year I try to pack less but we still take two cases and still bring one back full of clean clothes!!
Small is good sue, I like small, mind you love Corfu too. Plan to nip over to the mainland to Phillipi as well though. We have a car for 4 days which should be ample we'll rely on buses and taxis other times. Yes we will go to Panagia, everyone says its a must. That spring water will be very tempting in the heat of the day I'm certain...maybe with a drop or two of ouzo?

Hi rocdoc,
Do what we did. Make a list of all the clothes/ bits and bobs that you take with you, then tick off the ones that you actually wore/ used.
You would be surprised how many things you take that you do not actually use.
Keep the list for the next holiday and then pack accordingly. Try it, you never know!

Ellliemay,
Now that is a sensible idea
My intentions are to make an inventory of clothes I leave in the Den, alas I always forget
Today, I found myself looking in my gallery, enlarging the pictures of the Not Yet finished wardrobes to see if I could recognise what I'd left behind!
Needless to say I'm none the wiser

is a good idea, may give it a try. i do like a bit of chaos though. wife is far worse than me though, she never has any of her stuff organized, one year she just emptied her wardrobe of all her summer clothes and said i want to take it all. after a certain amount of negotiation she trimmed it down to a couple of colours plus a splash and I could get the lid down!

Brilliant idea about the list Elliemay but no way am I ruthless enough to minimize to one suitcase, I have too many "just in case" items! No will power!!! Plus I live in fear of a suit case going missing so by taking 2 and dividing my clothes between the 2, I worry less!
Rocdoc I've not heard about taking anti-histamine weeks ahead to reduce the effects of mozzie bites. Do you find it helps? (I assume you take the non-drowsy type )
What I would recommend you take is something for wasps stings just in case you get stung...they do tend to be a pest on Thassos. They are not aggressive, more of a nuisance.

If you're travelling about the island, try 'Ta Platania' psistaria. Its on the main road a couple of km past Skala Potamia as the road winds up the mountain. You can't miss it - there is a huge tree in the car park (hence the name) with a spring running out of it.
Very traditional food - meat on the spit etc. Very popular with the Greek locals especially the Greek nights on a Saturday night.
My other half worked there last summer - lovely people.

Hi to all the good folk out there who are going to Thassos...it's great to be able to read all the interesting stuff you are posting. It's great also to see so many people who agree that Thassos is simply brilliant, I'm sure though there is an element that anything to do with the Greek islands is a dream. As to the stuff about the dreaded mossies, what I do (and wow do they love me!) is from about a month before departure start taking Vitamin B1 with Thiamin pills (available from Boots et al), plus buy on-line the patches that you can stick on oneself (available on-line from "Dontbitemepatch.com") and then buy any sun oil with mossie deterent (Boots Skin so Soft is good)...so does it work? Well when we were in Corfu last time I was bitten the grand sum of once!...it does work for me. And again without waxing too lyrical about Thassos, the driving is safe and easy, there does not seem to be too many idiots on the road, you can visit many many beautiful beaches that have good access from the road that circumnavigates the island. As for packing, well it's done mentally but I don't believe it's done until we get into the car to drive south to Manchester airport. So roll on August for the joys of Golden Beach. Regards from MrM.

Best parts of our trip to Thassos were:
1. The ferry crossing to the island
2. Aforementioned Panagia
3. Thassos Town
4. Golden Beach
5. The monestery name of which I can't remember(best public toilets I've ever seen in Greece!
Worst parts were:
1. Noise from lorries taking marble to the port
2. Weather deteriorated towards the end of our stay in September.
3. Due to the size of the island and the one main road running round it, it was a case of "oh no, not this part of the road again"
All in all, we had a great time and I would not rule out going back, but not in September!
