we are staying at the Aberdeen studios in thassos town this June, its not an island we have visited before so we would appreciate info about the studios and any tavernas you have tried, plus any not to be missed places.

Hi rocdoc
I see you're off to Thassos in June, my wife and I will return for the third time in August to this truely lovely island. We have stayed in other studios in Thassos Town and heard that the Aberdeen is very good, we are staying at Golden Beach this year...you asked a couple of questions, I hope you don't mind my rather long reply!
Thassos is beautiful and mostly a quiet island, you can drive around it in a couple of hours on a very good road which circles the island (or take a bus on the good service that is offered) and call off at a number of very good and sandy beaches.
In Thassos Town itself we would recommend a restaurant/taverna called "Zorbas" for the best slow roasted lamb you might ever taste! For something unusual try having a meal and drink in the evening at any one of the tavernas that almost front onto the ferry terminal, you can then enjoy tyhe antics of those that leave a ferry in a car, bus or lorry and then try to navigate their way passed the badly parked cars...we have seen cars shunted out of the way!!
Think about hiring a car for some of your time there because you can explore very easily all the beaches that are on offer. One beach which is a "must see" is Aliki, small but with wonderful ruins and three or four tavernas. I have found one taverna on-line at Golden Beach which,if you follow the links, seems to offer a complimentary ticket for a first meal...simply enter Vigli and it should take you there. All the beaches have safe bathing and, I am glad to say, do not have all the noisy boats and watersports stuff. There are villages to visit in the hills, Panagia and Theologus are to be recommended. In fact I would be hard pressed to say "Don't do this or that" because we just love the place so much, I think the weather you are likely to experience will not be as in August...just go and enjoy it and I feel sure you willcome to feel about Thassos like eveone else I know who's been there.

Hi Mr M, thanks for your reply. Certainly sounds like it will be our sort of place. Mind you having said that it will be our tenth visit to Greece and we have only had one disapointing trip which was partially our fault. Will definately hire a car for part of our stay and maybe use the bus for other days out. What trips are on offer?
We always leave with a firm resolution not to be drawn into the tour company trips but usually finish up doing two or three!
The lamb sounds great so will check that out, and we have found before that the port can be a source of fun. We spent the best part of an hour on Ithaka watching a concrete lorry with a trailer on tow trying to reverse off a ferry and nearly finishing up in the drink. Eventually a committe of locals formed, the local plod, a fisherman, the taverna owner, the local goatherd plus his goats and a donkey, and after much stroking of the moustache and puffing on cigs they got him off, and we were able to continue our journey!!
We always try to find a music bar in our resort, for the occasional late night drink with good conversation and decent music, can you suggest one?
Must say am really looking forward to the trip , Thassos seems to have a lot of devotees.

Rocdoc, we stayed at the Aberdeen Studios in Sept 2007 and apart from the distance into Thassos Town we could not fault them. However, if you are allocated one of the studios which face onto the road then you will probably experience a lot of early morning noise from the lorries taking marble from the quarry to the docks!
The studios themselves have everything you need for a self-catering stay. They have a pool and snackbar although in September the water was horrendously cold and weonly ventured in twice the whole time we were there.
This apart, we had a good time on Thassos, it's almost impossible to get lost as there is only one main road around the island. A visit to Panagia is an absolute must and if you have never tasted roast goat before then the taverna in the middle of the square serves this. Very tasty!

Thanks sooz hopefully we wont get allocated a room facing the road, I've already told them its our wedding anniverary the day we travel( wife was a bit miffed!)so hopefully they'll take pity on me. so far we have missed goat, saw it being spit roasted over coals on the back of a trailer in Corfu for a festival but didnt get to try it, so we will search that one out for certain.
Have sent pm re aberdeen studios, does their bar stay open at night, or will we need to find a bar in town for a late night tipple and sorting out the world?

I've PM'd you but forgot to add that we think the bar does stay open late, and that's when you will get to know Carol and Vasilis. When we went we were'nt in the mood for late nights so didn't spend much time round the bar, the only time we sat round there was when we were waiting for the pick up coach! Probably missed out on a lot of fun!
By the way, Vasilas is a well known musician in Greece and the music they played round the bar was very much to our taste - 60s/70s!

Thanks sooz, will make a point of meeting them early on over a couple of ouzos and classic tunes. Must say the play acting on their website looks a bit scary though!!

This thread appears to have vanished from the forum menu. Other Greek holidays is not on the forum list ... comes up when you search only, unless I'm missing something, like maybe a few braincells, which is entirely possible. Any ideas?
