hi there,

I have a house in Spartillas and do not believe it has a name or a number or even a streetname.  I imagine the same applies to other properties. I wonder how the postman knows which house to deliver-to ! :) Is the postman simply expected to remember everyone's name and learn by experience where those people live in a particular village?

Cheers

Nick

Hi Nick

I have also wondered about this. There must be some sort of system otherwise noone would get any post. Perhaps that a good thing tho, just think no more bills dropping through the letterbox!!!

Post is delivered to a central point such as a kafenion, bar or shop in each village.

I sent a parcel to my friend recently, just her name (surname first followed by first name or initial), the name of the village, post code for the village, Corfu, Greece. She pops in at regular intervals to the cafe bar and picks post up.

The post code seems to be the same for the whole of Corfu but this is exactly what happens. You just need the village name and the persons name. The mail is dropped off at a kafenian or a garage or shop and you collect it. Have a look round your village for a letterbox in anyones door. I'll be very supprised if you find one.

We have found mostly everyone in the village has the same surname so they all have nicknames and you put their nickname and surname on and they then know who the post is for, thats what we do and it always gets to the right person.

Kefalonia

On Kefalonia the postman used to deliver direct to the house.  We also had a large box by the door that the breadman delivered to and, if we were out when the postman called, he would just leave any letters/parcels in the bread box.

It was amazing to see how he managed to decipher some of the addresses.  The best example was when I received a christmas card from one of the customers who had been to the taverna that I worked at in the summer - the envelope had simply been addressed to "Stuart, Kefalonia".

How about that for service!

Stuart

If your village is tiny, post will normally be delivered to a central point for you to collect. If it's a larger village, the postman will deliver to your door. He will find you even if there's no address on the letter or if no road name exists (don't worry - it's his job to deliver letters, after all).

When there are no streetnames, your name (or nickname) may still be enough. In a larger village, you may also include the area name - traditionally the name of the nearest church.

We have a Blue post box with a number which we put as our address. it is just at the top of our lane and works fine.  it cost us 10 euros which you get back if/when you give the key back. We have found that when sending to local Corfiots as there is a great similarity of Surnames they put their Father's initial in the name ie "Surname,  First name,   Fathers's name (or initial) seems everyone knows how this works!

Cheers

I have never come across ANY village where the postman delivers to the house. If you live a little outside the village it is POSSIBLE he might - my neighbours, 800 metres out of the centre, get post delivered. But in village centres, it goes to a strategicly placed coffee bar or minimarket.

Corfu has various postcodes:
49100 for Town, suburbs and for some odd reason the North East Coast (Graham, that's why you are under the impression it's all the same code!)
48084 for Achillion and south central area.
49080 for south of the Messongi Bridge.
49083 for central north area.
49082 for NW (I think).

Good point - I'd forgotten about that. It's the equivalent of what in England we call your "full name". Greeks don't have middle names/initials, but they use the father's first name as an identifier, i.e. First name, Father's name, Surname or Surname, First name, Father's name.

In the case of women who have changed their surname to their husband's (typically those over 50), you replace Father's name & surname with Husband's name and surname.

You can find information re: postcodes or buying a mailbox here: http://www.elta.gr/
