"QUOTE FROM THIS MORNINGS METRO"

First it was Parma ham, French Champagne, and Newcastle Brown Ale. Now, feta cheese has secured legal protection.

The white salty cheese made from sheeps milk should only be called Feta if it is made in certain parts of Greece, a judge has ruled.

German and Danish - and even Yorkshire - producers have cqalled for the protection, which Greek feta has enjoyed since 2002 to be lifted.

Denmark is Europes second largestproducer of feta making about 30,000 tonnes a year - some of it for export, ironically to Greece. Cheese producers living in "non feta" parts of Greece also stand to lose out - they will have to call their goods by another name.

Still tastes good to me!!!

I think thats good, now we are safe in the knowledge we are buying the proper Greek stuff, coz I find lots of 'Feta Cheese' sold in supermarkets here are completely different (in a bad way!) to what you get in Greece.

I can't wait for the 'real thing' in 30 days! Yummy!

Feta cheese in all it's variants is VERY different in Greece. It comes in cans, buckets, or little paper wrapped parcels.

Accept no substitute!

Salty, Hard, Bitter, with herbs, mild or sharp, amost none of the Feta you can buy in the UK is anything like the cheese in Greece. Even the stuff in Waitrose, apart from the 'Organic' Feta, mild and not very salty.

...Our country seems to be the only country that abides by the laws that has been past my Brussels..and we are not a full member as yet (god help us if we do)..Our fishing industry has been ruing by the French and Spanish(as most of our boats are registered to the Spanish anyway)...our so called cheddar cheese is made through out the world(when it suppose to be made in cheddar)and new laws are coming out of Brussels by the bucket load and its only our country that is abiding by the lews...The France say there are Law's the Italians say...Bah... to the laws.... the Germans will not pay up to the Laws(As they have not payed up for our meet as yet) and the Spanish say what laws..so our country is in a no way win situation..........ps this not aim at the good people of the said country's its there governments for not enforcing it..........chris

I have never found a Feta Cheese over here that tastes like it should.  Lots of them taste like Philadelphia to me.  I can't wait to get the proper stuff in Corfu in 24 days!  I could live on the stuff, but as for the versions we get over here - yuk!

I must try the Total one though to see what it is like.

Hi Natalie,

I can guarantee, you will be impressed with the Feta Cheese from the Total company. This cheese is made in Greece, by FAGE, and is sold quite widely through out the UK.

Please take a look at the following link for more information.

The Feta that is sold in Sainsbury's Supermarkets does have a label made in Greece on it and it tastes very nice, we have no complaints   baza
