Have just looked into this myself and correct me if I am wrong but almost everything is transferrable.

The voltage is within the permitted perecentage difference for 240v equipment to work, a cooker will have to be LPG usable and a tv will work if you are using a sattelite otherwise probably not for local stations, all the items you mentioned though can be used in Corfu.

Hi

this has come up recently in a couple of threads

You need to think about the way your Greek property is wired. Usually there are 10 amp circuit breakers to each socket. This means that any appliance should not be rated at more than 2200 watt for a 220volt supply or 2400 watt for a 240 volt supply.

Your kettle is likely to be 3000 watt (look at the label) which would blow a 10 amp trip/fuse (it's equivalent wattage at 220 volts is 2750 watts). Equally if you have a powerful heater in the washer or tumble dryer then same applies.

It maybe possible that your Greek house has 16 amp trips, then thats OK, I would find out.

Another thing about washing macjhines is that if you have a fancy electronic one then the winter electrical storms will soon put paid to it without good surge protection in place.

Our washing machine caused but a minor hiccup. The guy who plumbed it in said we couldn't connect to the hot water pipe as they only work off the cold water pipe here and heat the water internally.

He jiggled about at the back and it worked.

Generally speaking, it's only TVs which can present some problems if you can't re program them.

Thanks for all the replies

I was told that washing machines didnt spin at as high a speed as they do at home  they can be used but are not efficiant

toasters and kettels are too high wattage and blow the fuses and freezers dont freeze properly form your answers i gather this is all wrong and they just wanted me to buy new in greece maybe to boost the econemy HA HA

Oh well may be i will just leave them all behind new house new start what do you think ( i know what the old man will say)

The washers spin slower because the ones you buy there are meant to spin slower. It's quite usual for a washer to have a spin speed of 400 or 600 RPM. Don't know why they are so slow. Your washing machine will be only a little slower than when here. As Ian says, if you have a 16amp trip on the sockets your kettle  and toaster will still work but are taking slightly more power than the socket is designed for so it may get a bit warm.If you are taking your washing machine don't forget to put the securing bolts back in before transporting it.

I was advised not to buy a digital washing machine, and to buy a washer with a mechanical program as the power surges mess them up.

I really do think you would be pushing your luck having a digital washing machine, or anything else digital!! It's a nightmare in Corfu keeping things like PCs, Telephone etc working in the winter in Corfu. I have got up in the night many times and run down the cellar to disconnect everything as the lightning came. It still didn't help as lightning struck the exchange and wiped out all the phones for 2 weeks. Forget your washing machine and get a mangle with a big handle!!!
