Bruce 100% right on that one just sheer greed of the Airlines, so Rod what is the problem with the idea put forward by Trace? whats wrong with booking a late deal and then staying somewhere else?  the holidaymaker gets where he/she wants to go, the airline has its seat filled and the apartment owner will still be paid but for an empty apartment and may be lucky enough to let it out therby being paid twice!  at least the money is then going to the people who provide the accomadation.

lets face it the airlines / TO`s are still making money on the lower late deal prices because if they didnt it wouldnt happen.

Hi Everybody again

What we have to remember is they will try to give us as little as they can for as much as they can get out of us.

So i will try and get as much as i can for as little as i can pay

I will give you a example.I went into Comet and stood in front of a 42in plasma tv the price was 2,500 pounds. A assistant came over and ask if i needed help,I ask how much was a five year warranty on the plasma tv and was told 1,200 pounds. Then i told him i had 2,500 pounds to spend and what could he do for me for that,With that he went away and came back and said could i step into the office.I came out with a 42in plasma tv and a five year warranty for 2,500 pounds. That's 1.300 pounds for the plasma. And they must have  made money out of me. So it pays to have a try some times. Sometimes it works sometimes it don't .

I'm afraid that the apartment owner rarely gets paid by the Tour Operator for no-shows - which is in effect what we are talking about in this situation. They would be lucky to get a cancellation fee out of most of the big boys.

In my former life with Thomson it used to be part of my job to get compensation out of hotel/apartment owners when we had had to compensate a client for a bad experience, whilst trying to justify the fact that the owner was often left high and dry by us! Not my favourite part of the job I can tell you.

I booked a late deal to Corfu with my mum.  I hoped that our ages - I'm in my 30's and my mum in her 50's - would at least mean that we would be anywhere but Kavos, it didn't.  The TO was completely unflexible and wouldn't offer us any alternative - we did get moved in the end but only because the rep treated us quite badly so they didn't have very much choice although that's another story.

My advice to anybody would be to see what they are offering when you arrive as it could turn out to be a good deal but to have some contingency if you know the island well enough.  Alternatively just be prepared to accept the worst case scenario!

Petraki....thanks for your reply, seems like the fall guys are the apartment owners!  though we did get told by a friend who runs the family bar that the bigger places that thomsons take all season are paid upfront for their beds.

I think it depepnds on what type of contract they have with the TO.

Some accommodations are paid only when a room is occupied, however others do still get paid whether the allocation is taken up or not (this isn't always good because the accommodation owners don't make any extra money on pool bar sales etc if rooms are empty).

Also some tour ops disallow any rooms to be rented out independantly whereas some allow this for a number of rooms (every little helps).

Compicated isn't it

There will be no "rep" offices in San Stefanos n. w this year.

If you want alter. acc. get in touch-there are many free apts this year here in the village.-We are new British managers (resident )and have a list of properties. Yes it will cost extra but it`s worth it to be here.

Some with pool others by beach.  e/mail ionian@ionian-gem.com
