Quite right, I had just popped out to get something and checked title on my return, and corrected it before I read your post!   Isn't it fascinating?

"it would be an icredibly dangerous precedent".

Jan, I am sorry that I put you in the wrong category (i.e keeping the status quo) from your words above, on what you described as the Elgin Marbles.

And thanks for your reference to the Herakion Museum. It led me to old and dusty photograph books containing photos I took there. I guess the digging continues today (20 years later)? In addition, the hunt took me to a Herakion Museum book with 1500 marked on the inside. Would this refer to drachmas? Anyway the Minoan civilisation was clearly special.

jrk. That's OK! I agree my feelings about the Parthenon Marbles are a bit at odds with how I feel about museums in general!

1500 for a book does sound like drachmas certainly. Heraklion is a fascinating museum, long time since I have been there unfortunately.

We also spent all day in Heraklion museum looking at all the artifacts that came out of Knossos be for moving on to the next day to see the Palace of Knossos. My views on the palace are wonderful even by Rome-men standards...

But the only problem was the Greeks did not copy there plumming...IF ONLY THE DID...

Jan, I feel exactly the same. I don't think there is the same amount of feeling about most artefacts in most museums as there is about the Parthenon Marbles.

Quoting Trisa: "I don't think there is the same amount of feeling about most artefacts in most museums as there is about the Parthenon Marbles."

That's why maybe there's hope for their return to the Acropolis as a "special case" without opening the floodgates to a worldwide exchange of artefacts.

Completely agree that the Parthenon frieze is a "special case" which was why I started the thread in the first place; it certainly is a hot potato. Of course museums worldwide are incredibly valuable - it was just the reaction of, our very educated and proudly Greek (Athenian), friend when she saw, what she perceives as the symbol of her nation, represented as tourist "tat" in the British Museum which provoked me into starting this post. I can still remember the first time I saw the illuminated Parthenon late one April night in 1969 - it just took my breath away. That there is now a new, very beautiful museum with a gap in it waiting for the return of the statues, makes me weep. I just hope the powers that be do the right thing and return them home.

ps. I completely agree that Salonica - City of Ghosts is indeed an absolutely fascinating book. I have it on my bedside table and dip into it every evening!
