Hi All , can anyone give any advice on the best way to get UK private pensions paid into Alpha bank account with the best exchange rate ??

Or is it better to have pension paid into UK bank then transfer once or twice a year? [ any tax angles to consider ? ]We really are new to all of this and are trying to cover all angles before we finally decide to go for it. Help is appreciated.......thanks

Hi

The other option is to keep it in your UK account and draw it out over here whenever you want it.  You won't get transfer charges but obviously a poor exchange rate.  Most banks also charge for the service but I think if you use a Nationwide current account then you won't.  It might be worth looking into.

Just a suggestion to make your options more complicated.

Hi John & Hilary,

I use xe.com to exchange money for Europe & USA. I find their system easy & reliable. My immediate plan is to go for the exchange/transfer probably a couple of times a year. The wire transfer charges are too high to make monthly transfers. Never considered the option of just drawing cash from the UK account because I think you just get tourist rates but will now do some figures to see which is the best option.

Kev.

Hi John & Hilary,

Just having returned from Corfu, we were pleasantly surprised at the good exchange rate obtained when drawing cash out by card from ATMs.  Both Abbey National & Norwich & Peterborough gave a rate of 1.44 which is far better than tourist rates.  We find the same when transferring from Norwich & Peterborough to Alpha (This week also returned 1.44 with a £25 charge).

Julia is right about the Nationwide Flex account, you get your money out of the ATM in Corfu, the exchange rate is the interbank rate sometimes called visa rate, which is alot better than the tourist rate, and their are no commission charges, some banks charge upto 4.75%,

I have always received a better rate than the tourist rate when withdrawing money via the ATM's,but get a small charge from the bank.

I will be having my money paid into a Uk bank account then withdrawing it out either monthly or bi-monthly as required.

Nationwide don't charge but the bank that 'owns' the ATM often do.
